Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1472849). “That We May Give Ourselves” is a short anthem based on a traditional collect — a prayer comprising an invocation, petition, and conclusion — that appears in various Anglican prayer books. The invocation, “Eternal God and Father, by whose power we are created and by whose love we are redeemed” acknowledges the eternity, creative power, and redeeming love of God. The petition, “Guide and strengthen us by your Spirit, that we may give ourselves to your service, and live this day in love to one another, and live this day in love to you” asks for the aid of the Holy Spirit in service to God and recalls Jesus's words in the Gospel of Matthew, 22:37-39: “And [Jesus] said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”The conclusion, “through Jesus Christ our Lord,” reflects the mediating role of Jesus Christ the Son, as expressed in I Timothy 2:5 (“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”) and Ephesians 2:18 (“For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father”).Appropriate at any time of year, this short anthem of dedication is an ideal offertory selection. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Three Evening Canticles were written as part of a setting of choral evensong for Church of the Holy Apostles - Anglican, Fort Worth, Texas. Metrical, mostly homophonic, and conservative in technical challenges and ranges, these canticles are accessible for small choirs and those of moderate ability, yet musically satisfying for large and accomplished groups. Phos Hilaron (“O Gladsome Lightâ€) is one of the earliest known Christian hymns (ca. 3rd-4th century) recorded outside of the Bible. Intended to be sung at the kindling of lights in the evening, it is sometimes known as the “lamp-lighting hymn†and has been adopted by some Anglican bodies as an optional invitatory canticle immediately preceding the psalm(s) appointed for the day.Magnificat (The Song of Mary) is a scriptural canticle based on an account in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, visits her cousin  Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist, who will prophetically proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and subjection to God’s will, and Mary responds, “My soul doth magnify the Lord ... for he that is mighty hath magnified me ... and his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.†The Magnificat is said or sung immediately after the first lesson (scripture reading) in the service of evening prayer. Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is also a scriptural canticle taken from Luke (2:29-32).  Simeon, a devout Jew, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. A contemporary of William Shakespeare and John Milton, God-child to poet John Donne, Herbert is associated with the 17th-century Metaphysical poets and “is remembered as a pivotal figure: enormously popular, deeply and broadly influential, and arguably the most skillful and important British devotional lyricist of his or any other time.” Shortly before his death in 1633 at age 39, Herbert directed that a manuscript of his religious poems be sent to his fellow clergyman and friend, Nicholas Ferrar, reportedly saying, “Tell him ... if he can think it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor Soul, let it be made publick: if not, let him burn it: for I and it, are less than the least of God’s mercies.” First published in 1633, The Temple was an enormously popular work, totaling more than 20,000 copies printed in 13 editions between 1633 and 1679.“Let All the World in Ev'ry Corner Sing” is the refrain of Herbert’s poem, “Antiphon (I),” which appeared in the “Christian Life” section of The Temple. An antiphon may be defined as a short sentence or refrain sung or recited before or after a psalm or canticle; and in Herbert's short poem of two stanzas, he may also have intended that the verses be recited antiphonally (alternately) by two groups. History of the United States Coast Guard and the Coast Guard HymnIn 1915 the United States Congress formed the United States Coast Guard (USCG) when it combined the Revenue Cutter Service with the Life-Saving Service. The Coast Guard became the sole maritime arm of the United States Armed Forces with the purpose of saving people in danger at sea and enforcing America’s maritime laws. In 1939, the Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the Lighthouse Service and maintenance of aids to maritime navigation. In 1946 the Coast Guard assumed oversight of the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation, including merchant marine licensing and merchant vessel safety. And in 1967, the Coast Guard assumed the administration of bridges over navigable waterways. The Coast Guard serves under the Department of Homeland Security in peacetime, but under the Department of the Navy in war. Missions include protecting the environment, and securing the nation by enforcing Federal laws on the high seas, on the nation's coastal waters, and in the nation’s inland waterways. At one time, under its former name, the Coast Guard was the only Unted States Armed Force at sea. On August 4, 1790, President George Washington signed the Tariff Act, providing funds to finance the construction of ten ships to enforce Federal tariff and trade laws. Throughout much of its history, the Coast Guard used verse one of the Navy Hymn in its chapel services, because it did not have its own hymn. So, on June 18, 2024, hymn writer James F. Linzey, who dubbed the Coast Guard as the “Ruler of Land and Sea,” since it patrolled the shores and the seas, felt inspired to write the United States Coast Guard hymn. He felt that a score that matched the majesty of the Navy Hymn would be appropriate. Therefore, he chose “Diademata” by Elvey. James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation.
