This traditional Irish hymn may also be appropriate for just about any day of the year, especially so at services before or after St. Patrick's Day. This hymn is for SATB w piano accomp. It may be performed a cappella. Written for quartet, very large quartet, or choir in church, school, or community choral groups. A pianist or organist may play the four parts along with the choir. This hymn is short and may be used as a benediction at the end of a religious service. Of course it is very useful within a choral concert performance of any sort. Just sing it softly when required, sing it sweetly, and your audiences will love it. This traditional Irish blessing is an ancient Celtic prayer. Celtic literature is famed for using images of nature and everyday life to speak of how God interacts with His people. May the road rise up to meet you is about God's blessing for your journey in life - may your walk be an easy one, with no mountains to climb or obstacles to overcome. It alludes to three images from nature - the wind, sun and rain as pictures of God's care and provision: The wind can be likened to the Spirit of God, which helps move you along on rough days. The sun's warmth in the prayer reminds us of the tender mercies of God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven. The soft falling rain speaks of God's provision and sustenance. Finally, we are reminded that we are held safe in God's loving hands as we travel on our journey through life.

Although it is short at one and a half minutes, it uses a number of musical devices to make it seem larger. Besides a piano part, it has chords for a stringed instrument such as guitar or mandolin. If you really want to add some flavor to it, the top line of the piano part could be played by a recorder, penny whistle, etc. whenever there is no one singing. The long rising and falling phrases and the relentless, rolling arpeggios of the piano part are meant to evoke the rise and fall of the ocean waves that surround Brittany on three sides along its hundreds of miles of breathtakingly beautiful coastline.This piece was composed for the Counterpoints choir of North Vigo High School, Terre Haute, Indiana, under the direction of Michelle Azar. It was first performed on October 24, 2017 under the direction of the composer.

A vivid and at times raucous celebration of Saturnalia, in Latin, for an ensemble of voices and instruments (including various percussion, woodwind and brass instruments). The sound sample is a sung performance by the composer with an electronic preview of the instruments. Further explanations: Song for Saturnalia - a raucous and fun romp - in whole tones (since there is scant evidence of the types of scales used in those days - whole tones just seem to work in this context). The Latin words make references to relatively modern times but the spirit of Saturnalia is timeless, after all. The pileum (also written pilleum) is the little cap that slave wore during Saturnalia to show they were free men and women on that day - they would point to their cap and say libertus sum (I am a free person) and omnes aequales sumus (we are all equal). The words (and translation - both by me) are as follows: Saturnalia Song Io Saturnalia! Hodie igitur dominus noster non es. Stewart (A0.1505628). “Farewell to Tarwathie” is probably best known from Judy Collins’ recording of 1970 that was accompanied by the songs of Humpback whales; but it started first with a poem written by the Scottish poet-peasant George Scroggie, published in 1857. His poem was accompanied by the traditional 18th century Scottish air “Kennet’s Dream”. Thus, the marriage of Scroggie’s words to a well-known Scottish fiddle tune gives us the “Farewell to Tarwathie” as we know it today. It is a song about a young sailor saying good-bye to family and friends as he heads out to sea to find riches in hunting the whale. This arrangement is scored for a traditional choral mixed ensemble with divisi [SMATTBB] (at times) and a bass-baritone solo, to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 5:30+-.
