In Matthew 5-7 in The New Testament and in 3 Nephi 12-14 in The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, our Savior teaches us the way to contentment and happy living through The Beatitudes. These gems of Christian living were taught by Jesus as the initial part of the most well-known of his teachings called The Sermon on the Mount. The word “beatitude†comes from the Latin “beatitudo†meaning “blessedness.†Each of the eight beatitudes in this book consists of two phrases: the condition and the result. Together, these illustrate a set of ideals focusing on love and humility, echoing the highest of Jesus’ teachings on spirituality and compassion. Each also promises a future reward, and the themes appear to escalate from beginning to advancing levels of responsibility and spirituality as the Sermon progresses. By the end of the Sermon a recipient would have earned the reward to stand ceremonially in the presence of God, and to ultimately gain the greatest reward of living with Him in heaven. The purpose of this book is to praise our Lord through song and text, rejoicing in the gifts we receive from Him as we do as He suggests. Please enjoy this collection of original solos, SATB choral renditions, and a duet, along with a short text explaining each beatitude in the order our Savior spoke them so many years ago as part of the greatest sermon ever given, our Lord’s Sermon on the Mount! The music reminds me of little children skipping with glee under a bright blue morning sky. It needs to be sung with joy in the Lord, Who hears us when we call, forgives our sins, and gives us grace to love Him, keep his commands and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. It should be a wonder morning service anthem, but why not try it in the evening, too, in anticipation of meeting God at the beginning of the next day. The key to the style of this piece is rhythmic vitality. The 6/8 meter should be conducted in two, but singers (and the conductor) must feel the eighth note division of the beat as the composition's energizing rhythmic subtext. After the choir has learned the words, pitches and rhythms of the piece, have them let the text go for awhile, and replace it with the syllable doo for every eighth note value. That is, for every eighth note sing 'doo once; for every quarter note sing it twice; for every dotted quarter note sing it three times, and so on. You will hear some giggling from your singers. In chapter two of Paul's letter to the Philippians, Paul begins speaking to his readers about encouragement, comfort from love, participation in the Spirit, and godly affection and sympathy for one another. He says, we are to count others as more important than ourselves. He pleads, Complete my joy by doing these things. From this point, Paul breaks immediately into this other known 1st century Hymn to Christ (Verses 5-11), which I have called, The Great Humility of Christ. The hymn text is a beautiful exposition of the Gospel; Christ in the form of God, did not hold onto (grasp) His equality with God, but humbled Himself and took on the human form of a servant (slave) and poured Himself out for all of mankind. The anthem is composed for SATB (a cappella) choir in two stanzas, with a bridge section and a coda. The piece is scored in D minor, but weaves between D minor and G Major (representing the dual natures of Christ-fully God and fully man). After the first stanza, regarding Christ’s taking on human flesh, the unthinkable happens; Christ humbles Himself in holy obedience to be put to death, even a humiliating and repugnant death on a cross. Here in the anthem we find the musical bridge between the two stanzas with the sopranos holding onto a single note (high D) followed by a cascade of dissonant suspensions, one voice handing off to the other, finally resolving in a descending scale.The second stanza declares God’s having exalted Christ as a consequence of His sacrifice, giving Him a name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. The final coda (in G Major) trumpets the pronouncement that; Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father.

In its effortless use of various elements of Baroque practice, I have written a piece which will hopefully be useful for high schools and community colleges with smaller choirs to get students to sing works which can prep them for repertoire. Churches will also find this a work appropriate for any festive occasion and also useful in telling people that composers actually exist today who like the bygone way of doing things. And also with a rather exciting piano part! I certainly enjoy raising the bar.To that end, the A section can be sung on its own as a separate piece, as it is deliberately easier than the B section, which has more chromatic and polyphonic passages. This is the perfect piece to convey to high school students the impression that Baroque music can be exciting, spontaneous, and not old-fashioned, and in a matter which will be immediately perceived to be authentic.The ad libitum trumpet parts are available directly from the composer. Though they are not strictly necessary for a successful performance, they do give a special spice and festive aura that can only be beneficial.

While much of the psalm indicates that its author was dealing with some serious life issues, in this verse the psalmist affirms a trust in the Lord’s help: not salvation for the next life, but rescue and shelter within the present lifetime. This piece attempts to portray such trust in God during times of struggle and pain.At least two soloists are necessary, but the solo parts may be divided among more singers if desired to suit your ensemble. The piece may be performed successfully using only chorus, soloists, and piano; however, there is also an orchestration available (S0.249231) for trumpet, tenor sax, guitar, and upright bass. Be warned that the tenor sax part is advanced-but someone who regularly handles musical theater woodwind books should have no problem. There are a number of time-signature changes but only to allow the music to flow with natural rhythms. There is also quite bit of divisi (up to SSAATTBB for the last chord) / added-note chords, so you will need relatively competent (and confident) singers although the range should not really stretch. If your organ has a good complement of reeds, so much the better but a smaller instrument will still cope.

Psalms 100.This anthem was commissioned by Dorothy Yates to mark the 50th anniversary of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, Atlanta, Georgia. The text is announced by a brief fanfare on the organ. The raised 4th scale degree of the opening theme suggests the Lydian mode and accentuates the music’s upward thrust. Following the opening fanfare, the setting passes back and forth between duple and triple meter several times. Triple and duple rhythmic elements occur simultaneously and play off of one another. In the anthem’s middle section, the rhythmic energy of the opening is exchanged for a gentle extended crescendo as voices alternately sing their four-note, stepwise, rising lines over sustained organ chords. Then, the more energetic and somewhat metrically ambiguous elements of the previous section return. Finally, the text and music heard at the anthem’s opening recur in the manner of an antiphon. As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have mostly elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. (See below for more comment on the texts in this set.) There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The hymns in this set are Children of the Heavenly Father, Day by Day, Thy Holy Wings, and Beautiful Savior. A note on the texts in this set: Having grown up in a Swedish Lutheran church, the grandson of Swedish/Norwegian immigrants, and currently being choir director of another Swedish Lutheran church, these hymns have a special place for me. This set was originally arranged for my church choir with the first verse of each in Swedish. Being under copyright, permission was obtained to use the more familiar English translations of the first three songs for local use. For this edition, I have opted to create my own texts for the first and third hymns while the second is a translation in public domain. I have also provided a verse in English in lieu of the Swedish for those Nordically challenged. The fourth hymn is not a Swedish melody but for obvious reasons is a mainstay of the Lutheran hymnal. Like the other hymns, the first verse is in Swedish while the other traditional verses are also public domain.
