Published by Gordon John Thornett (A0.821201). Prelude and Cherubic Hymn was commissioned by the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin, to mark the 25th anniversary of their annual Advent services held in Berlin Cathedral. It was performed by joint choirs, drawn from students, parents and faculty, and choir members of the American Church in Berlin on 29 November 2017.The piece is built around the ancient hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence. I was asked to write an organ prelude, to serve as a processional as the choirs assembled. This may be ordered separately through SwirlyMusic.org - and now also through SheetMusicPlus.After an opening fanfare-like section, the hymn setting starts gently, with sopranos singing in unison, with successive verses using contrasting choral forces to reflect the words, and the music builds to a big climax, with a return of the fanfare opening, for the final verse, At his feet the six-winged seraph, ending with joyful Alleluias. Although originally conceived for a large chorus with orchestral accompaniment, the setting may be performed with just organ or piano.There's a youtube video at https://youtu.be/HQwYDJRdmcc - this is an extract from the first performance in the magnificent setting of Berlin Cathedral, which was packed to capacity. The quality of both sound and picture isn't great, but it will provide you with an idea of the atmosphere and impact of the piece. The sound recording covers the whole piece, using Sibelius sounds. Curtis, Choral Director at the JFK School, writes:Prelude and Cherubic Hymn is a grand arrangement of the timeless carol 'Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence'. Utilizing choir, full orchestra and organ, it is sure to please and impress performers and audience alike. At a recent performance in the Berlin Cathedral, the piece received spontaneous applause (which was a first for this kind of event).NOTE - Although originally scored for orchestra, the piece would work well with just choir and organ - in which case the fanfare sections at the beginning and the first 6 measures at letter F could be omitted. GRACE DARLING: One of my full length family plays in the TYNE ONSTAGE series of original musicals. With Drama, Comedy and Song they offer a new source of material to any Producer, Director or Teacher in the Performing Arts looking for original stories with great songs, covering a wide range of musical styles. GRACE DARLING was known as the ‘Heroine of the Farne Islands’ off the Northumberland coast where she lived with her family in the Longstone Lighthouse. She became a household name when in 1838 along with ther father William Darling rowed out in a North Sea gale to rescue 9 passengers from the capsized paddle steamer Forfarshire. Honoured by royalty, her fame was short-lived as she died of Tuberculosis in 1842 aged only 27. Good for Missionary or Youth Musical Numbers - Soprano/Tenor or Men/Women Choirs This medley was written upon request for a missionary's send-off! It's great for: - Church Services - Missionary Farewells and Homecomings - Firesides - Youth Choirs - Adult Choirs - Soprano and Tenor Duet Purpose/Message: The medley's purpose is to invigorate us and to encourage us to be brave in sharing truth. It emphasizes the concepts of pressing on, having courage, and not fearing. Difficulty: Medium (There are some independent singing sections, some notes at the top of the soprano and tenor range, and a couple spots with less typical harmonies. It is, however, not a difficult piece overall. Those who are accustomed to singing in choirs will have no trouble but will be challenged enough to enjoy the piece.) Range: The notes are within range for a somewhat experienced or serious singer. If using in a choir, you can have the higher notes sung one octave lower by those out of range, or add a harmonic note as needed. There are only a couple of instances where this might be needed. Solutions to Problems: If you have youth afraid to go on missions, this song will help them take courage and be brave. If you have adults who are faltering from fear (as all do on occasion), it is hoped this song will bolster their courage and resolve. Duration of Work: This medley is approximately 4:12 minutes long. Published by Gene Roberson (A0.848386). Here is a wonderful setting of the old hymn Let the Lower Lights Be Burning. This is an old favorite hymn of the church set for men's chorus. There are some delicious low notes for the guys in the bass section that like to demonstrate their rumbling low notes. Use anytime in the church year. Many of the old hymns have great stories behind them. We used this in a choir concert of old hymns with the story told of each one before singing. A music for your Tenors and basses.
