The Promise of Liberty, available for either SATB or unison/2-part treble choir with optional guitar or piano accompaniment, is an adaptation of the sonnet The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus (1883). The sonnet was written to raise money for the construction of the Statue of Liberty's pedestal and has graced the entrance to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor since 1945. The chorus for this work is adapted from the Lazarus poem, while the verses are new text written by the composer. Duration ca. 3 minutes. The Promise of Liberty Winds blow fierce and foul storms rage. Safe shelter seems a hopeless dream. But in the dark a promise beams, a beacon to a golden age. [Chorus] Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Give me the wretched from your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door, I lift my lamp beside the golden door. So cries the strong heroic woman, raising her arm to light the way. 'From Now On' is one of Pasek and Paul's most famous songs, and has taken on a special resonance in minority communities because of its fighting spirit, and message of hope, optimism and inclusion. An upbeat marching finale, it asks the audience to pledge with the singers that 'things will be different' from now on.This SATB arrangement, with short bass/baritone solo at the start, grew from a June 2019 Carnegie Hall massed performance of 25 LGBTIQ+ choirs, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976728). David's Kyrie is a setting of selected verses from Psalm 51. It is a challenging piece suited for advanced choirs in an academic or concert setting or for adventurous ensembles in sacred services. It mixes ancient and modern forms and sonorities to depict the contrition, repentance, absolution, and salvation portrayed in the psalm, juxtaposing medieval chant with Whitacre-esque clusters and dissonances. In structure, David's Kyrie roughly follows the Kyrie of the Christian mass and even borrows a melodic line from a medieval Kyrie. The heading for Psalm 51 states that it is For the director of music underscoring the fact that all 150 psalms in the Bible were meant to be sung, as they have been for most of the last 3,000 years. It is my hope that David's Kyrie will be an encouragement to continue that great heritage.

The text, taken from the Mass for the Dead, has been treated in a hopeful way, by no means in a mournful one. Within an always calm and meditative atmosphere, I tried to give a 'luminous' treatment of the Latin word Lux, as if it came from a very distant place, from the infinite space, out of this world. This is a revised and final version.

Program note — Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for its February 2023 Planet Home concert, Extinction sets the poem “An Extinction†(2022) by Kim Stafford for SATB mixed chorus. The three stanzas of the poem get distinct musical treatment: the first some text-painting and dissonance, the second rhythmic parts underpinning canonic melodic lines, the third a rich chorale. During my work on this piece, I happened to be traveling by train. The pitches of the train whistle snuck their way into the score as a dissonant chord. A nature soundscape may sometimes accompany this piece, although the tongue click sounds create a bit of their own aural ecosystem. Drawing attention to the unfolding catastrophe of mass extinction, Extinction hopes to inspire humans to action to prevent further loss of species biodiversity.

The original words, a mixture of middle English and Latin, are magnificent in context, but mean little to people today. In The Saviour is born this day I have written new words that communicate a meaningful message while still conveying a sense of 16th century majesty. In this way I hope that this beautiful and regal music may once again become relevant to our Christmases. The harmonies are my own, although I have retained some of the characteristics of early 16th century heraldic music.
