The opening’s atmospheric and mysterious tone suggests a quiet mist over tranquil water, reflecting the trail of slaves through the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia escaping captivity. The chorus is used here as tonal color while the organ moves slowly beneath as a winding, rippling river. As this ends, the music breaks into a faster motive utilizing an underlying mixed meter. With the words “Oh don’t you want to go…,†the phrases become shorter and more urgent. As the chorus proclaims “That promised land...,†the work comes to an animated climax, the organ then emerging as a solo, dancing and finally growing quieter to the choral entrance at “where all is peace.†The congregation enters singing the traditional melody while three part women’s voices add a harmonic descant commentary. Finally, returning to the opening mysterioso style, the congregation sings “I want to cross over into campground.†Duration: 5:00.

The musical setting presents the opening lyrics in the children’s voices: The day is done, and the darkness falls from the wings of night. These phrases, or slight variations thereof, return as refrains throughout the song. The verses alternate between the men’s and women’s voices, with the children interjecting refrains or offering commentary in the background. Finally, the children interrupt the SATB dialogue with exclamations of a song! a song! a song! These lead to the climax of the song, given to the children’s chorus, singing And the night shall be filled with music. All voices then join together in celebration: Our song shall fill the night. The accompaniment (originally composed for piano, later adapted for flute, strings, and percussion) delights in text-setting with sparkling arpeggios depicting the celestial harmonies, and filigree patterns for the star-filled night sky. The lyrics are partially anonymous but most published versions include verses that seem to have been added by the arranger of that version. This Epiphany song has similar themes to We Three Kings but is definitely a refreshing change from that well known tune. This fun arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for Baritone soloist, SATB choir, a woodwind instrument, and bass instrument. Included is sheet music for C, Bb, and Eb instruments and a bass line which can be played by many different bass instruments depending on what the group has available. The instrumentalists can transpose their parts to different octaves for ease of playing if necessary. The Baritone soloist should be a well experienced intermediate singer and the bass line is very active at times, but the choir and woodwind parts should be performable by most intermediate groups. Though challenging at times, the intuitive voice leading makes this piece accessible for the average choir. Since selling cattle was quite profitable, a crew of cowboys drove a herd, particularly from Texas, to railheads where they would be loaded into railcars and shipped cross-country to get the best price at market. Cowboys watched the cattle 24 hours a day, herding them in the proper direction in the daytime and watching them at night to prevent stampedes and deter theft. Around the campfire, cowboys sang of life on the trail with all the challenges, hardships, and dangers encountered along the way.E. C.
