It Is Not Death to Die is a new setting of French poet Henri Abraham César Malan's Non, ce n'est pas mourir as translated by George Washington Bethune and adapted for this work. Why this text? It first came to my notice shortly after the passing of Billy Graham, who was known to paraphrase D. L. Moody, Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.Graham's bold proclamation and Malan's poetry motivated me to focus anew on the resurrection, re-remembering it as the pivotal element of the Christian faith. For if there is no resurrection, Paul says in 1 Cor 15, our faith is useless. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead! Unfortunately, singing about heaven has, perhaps, been neglected of recent decades. We seem to have focused more on the already to the detriment of the not yet. But it is important to remember that this life is not all there is! Quoting Paul again, the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Rom 8:18). Yet, if Christ delays, the grim inevitability of our transition into eternity is a certain experience we all face. Malan's poetry so poignantly and eloquently captures this tension that it compelled me to compose a fresh musical setting that attempts to captures the mixture of dread and hope borne out in the acclamation that death is swallowed up in victory! I pray that this setting aids the Church to remember the great hope and promise Christ has granted us: O Death, where is your victory? O Death, where is your sting?_______________________________________________________________________________________________The music opens with a C# diminished chord in a very still and somber texture reflective of grief. The text is introduced with the first of two main motives, a rising 4-note outline of B minor in a triple repetition of It Is Not Death. As each stanza proceeds the music concludes on the second motive, a 5-note descending span of a minor 7th in Bb Lydian. The energy and mood of the music gradually shift over the five stanzas, as the focus moves from this life to the next; the texture thickens, the harmony expands, and the dynamic grows into the music’s pinnacle on reign with You on high! The music closes on a reprise of the opening section, simultaneously mindful of our mortality and our eternity.

Music, set to a slow tempo in swing eighths, makes the recitation tempting, if not downright sultry.3. Bugs is a soundscape of insects and their songs. Precise vocal effects make this challenging but also whimsical, and the result is pure fun.4. Love, O Love recalls an old-fashioned love letter in which the writer compares the beloved to the moon and the sun and pledges eternal love. The music begins with lush chords sung together, moves to an over-arching soprano line with gentle undulations in the lower parts, and finishes with the choir singing together again, Love shines on you, my only one.5. A perfectly apt finale to this choral suite, Kentucky Derby begins with a nod to My Old Kentucky Home, and then it's off to the races, literally. The text of the suite is declaimed rapidly in patter-song format, almost as if the chorus is calling race as it progresses. A tour de force, and truly, ..a wild ride!

This traditional Irish hymn may also be appropriate for just about any day of the year, especially so at services before or after St. Patrick's Day. This hymn is for SATB w piano accomp. It may be performed a cappella. Written for quartet, very large quartet, or choir in church, school, or community choral groups. A pianist or organist may play the four parts along with the choir. This hymn is short and may be used as a benediction at the end of a religious service. Of course it is very useful within a choral concert performance of any sort. Just sing it softly when required, sing it sweetly, and your audiences will love it. This traditional Irish blessing is an ancient Celtic prayer. Celtic literature is famed for using images of nature and everyday life to speak of how God interacts with His people. May the road rise up to meet you is about God's blessing for your journey in life - may your walk be an easy one, with no mountains to climb or obstacles to overcome. It alludes to three images from nature - the wind, sun and rain as pictures of God's care and provision: The wind can be likened to the Spirit of God, which helps move you along on rough days. The sun's warmth in the prayer reminds us of the tender mercies of God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven. The soft falling rain speaks of God's provision and sustenance. Finally, we are reminded that we are held safe in God's loving hands as we travel on our journey through life.

Taking inspiration from the original and several other different covers of this song, I've written out what is probably one of my favorite arrangements I've written. It's sure to challenge your performers and keep your audience engaged from start to finish!It starts with a soft drone in the Basses that continuously adds chord tones and volume to build sonic intensity and set the tone right out of the gate! We then move on to a slowed down first verse with the melody supported only by chords in the choir. Vocal Percussion leads us into a tempo change and explosive snippet of the melody before the piece hits its stride. Lots of upbeats, syncopations, and altered melodic tones throughout adds a high level of difficulty to this piece. As we get to the end of this piece, the ensemble will suddenly alter time to a half time feel that not only adds to excitement but also helps to bring the piece to a dramatic closing.This is written for Solo voice and SSAATTBB choir and a Vocal Percussionist.As with most of my arrangements I leave many of the syllables blank to encourage the director/performers to put their own spin on the arrangement with their own choice of syllables! Suggested syllables in certain spots and all necessary melodic lyrics have all been included for you!I hope that you and your group enjoys my arrangement! Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1487909). Composer’s Notes Anim Zemiros was composed in 1985 while I was a doctoral student of Martin Boykan at Brandeis University. The initial fugal theme was inspired by the melody from the third movement of Beethoven's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132, also known as Heiliger Dankgesang. My theme resembles Beethoven's melody in two ways: it aurally approximates the rhythms of his theme and it also takes the contour of Beethoven's melody and inverts it, also in an approximated way. This is where the similarities to Beethoven's theme end, forAnim Zemiros is most certainly not composed in the Lydian mode! Rather, it is composed in a chromatically saturated musical language. Although Anim Zemiros may be used for the Jewish Musaf Sabbath Service, it was conceived as a concert piece. In the synagogue, this hymn is sung responsively by the cantor and congregation. The responsive nature of this hymn is what inspired the use of contrapuntal passages alternating with homophonic ones. Anim Zemiros begins with a statement of the initial fugal theme in the basses followed by a response at the interval of a fifth in the altos during which the basses present the counter theme. After a brief episode, the same thing happens in the tenor and soprano voices while the basses and altos present new contrapuntal melodies. A brief, contrasting, calm homophonic chorale passage ensues (a textural foreshadowing of both the loud climax and the hushed closing of the piece). This is followed by an extended development section (like ones from sonata-allegro movements) in which ideas from both the contrapuntal and homophonic sections are fragmented and stratified. Shifting time signatures provide added momentum to this music that leads to the homophonic climax that follows. Next comes an “anti-fugue” in which the initial fugal theme is presented backwards, as is the fugal form itself, moving from four voices, to three and finally to two. However, rather than moving to one voice as at the opening of the piece (which would have been a very predictable thing to do), the piece ends with a reminiscence of the calm homophonic chorale. Ashkenazic pronunciation was chosen over Sephardic for two reasons. I wished to have the s sound on the Hebrew letter sov rather than the t sound. In addition, Ashkenazic pronunciation is considered to be somewhat archaic since Sephardic is used in modern Hebrew. I felt this gave me artistic license to compose vocal lines containing correct or incorrect syllabic stress for purely musical effect. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.
