Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.†The track features lead vocals, drums and tambourine by Ringo Starr, with the other Beatles providing backing vocals, lead and rhythm guitar, piano, bass and cowbell. The song was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney specifically as Starr’s track for the album. Story has it that Starr’s vocals were recorded with his bandmates standing around him, true to the spirit of the song. “With a Little Help from My Friends†was later successfully recorded by Joe Cocker (1968) and Wet, Wet, Wet (1998) and was adopted as the theme song for the iconic 1988 television show “The Wonder Yearsâ€. Mary Elizabeth Frye (1905-2004) The poem that Mary had written in 1932 depicts the story of a young Jewish girl, Margaret Schwarzkopf, who had been staying at the Frye’s household and was unable to visit her dying grandmother in Germany due to anti-Semitic unrest. Mary Frye made several copies of the poem and circulated them privately and among her friends. She never published or copyrighted the poem and so it remained unknown until Frye revealed that she had written it. Her claim was confirmed in 1998 after research by Abigail Van Buren.

Thanks, John. On My Own is a duet by American singers Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald.  It was written and produced by Burt Bacharach and his then-wife Carole Bayer Sager and originally recorded by singer Dionne Warwick for inclusion on her album Friends (1985).  The two performers were in separate cities when they recorded their individual parts which were then married during mixing.  This was reflected in the music video produced to promote the song, which depicted LaBelle and McDonald performing the song simultaneously on different coasts.  The singers were shown on separate sides of a split screen, each singing the song while walking through apartments which had identical layouts but different decor and furniture.  The views from their respective porches, where they finished the song, made clear their separation by the continent.

On the morning of 2 March 2020, I finished writing the first draft of this song. It was the same morning that the New South Wales Rural Fire Service announced that for the first time since July 2019, the state was free of active bush and grass fires.At the time it felt quite euphoric. We’d been through a lot. Little did we know what was coming just a few days from then, when the Covid19 global pandemic reached our shores. It’s a virus that would kill millions across the world, and disable millions more, long term. It forced us, globally, into a kind of reckoning the like of which we had never experienced before. Non pharmaceutical controls like lockdowns, mask mandates, social distancing and ventilation standards were employed to keep us safe from this airborne virus, whilst scientists worked round clock to develop vaccines and treatments.Technically, the declaration of a pandemic is still active, but governments and people have somehow decided for themselves that it is all over. No one takes any precautions any more. Governments have stopped reporting statistics. People who know they are infected are going about their business with no thought for others. Meanwhile, many of the immune-compromised, the disabled, the vulnerable, are unable to safely leave their homes and engage in activities out in the world. I know this, because I am a carer for a vulnerable person.What this whole exercise has taught me is that people in the world are actually much less kind than I thought they were. Humans do not really care for each other. People attack me for wearing a mask, tell me that I’m virtue signalling and that I look ridiculous (as if I care how I look). I’ve asked questions about workplace Covid safety and been informed that it’s “a bit rich†that I’m asking at all, when everything is now safe. A friend’s diagnosed Long Covid symptoms were cruelly minimised or completely dismissed “Oh, it’s not Covid. How old are you? In your forties? It’s your hormones, it’s the menopause.†The fatal combination of sheer selfishness, rampant misinformation and DISinformation continues, whilst people waltz around spreading a deadly virus with no thought for the grief that will undoubtedly ensue.It boils down to this: if we want to continue as a species and to have a planet on which to reside, we have to stop with the Self Care and start with the Community Care. A choir is the perfect instrument for expressing these notions, through the unique power of the massed first person plural. My wish for this piece is that it spurs performer and listener alike into some kind of action. Please consider the effect your actions have on others, and on the planet, and make any changes necessary, however inconvenient or difficult they are. My dear friend, and Pastor Don Colageo and I cut our teeth together with this piece when we decided to dive headlong into this cycle of Seven Anthems to Christ. It was the second song of the (SEVEN ANTHEMS TO CHRIST) cycle that I had composed, but the first using his Greek translation(s). It eventually would become the last piece to grace the cycle of seven in order of my musical presentation sequence. In fact, this known 1st century Hymn to Christ spans 18 verses of the first chapter of the Gospel of John. My setting of the anthem is seven plus minutes long in performance length. The song's length was not on purpose, but the number seven does have Biblical significance (seven days of creation, seven golden lamp stands, etc.) The number seven is also known among Biblical scholars as the number of Holiness and Perfect Creation. Since this rather long, yet theologically complete Hymn to Christ already existed in the 1st century, it is no wonder the Apostle John opted to begin his Gospel with it, probably quoting the entire text. Consequently, he converted this particular Hymn to Christ’s lyrics into what would later become canonized Scripture. The anthem is composed for SSATB with solo SSA trio, and Solo Soprano and Solo Baritone lines, accompanied by Flute and B♠Clarinet. The key signature of the anthem is B♠Major. However, a lot of time is spent weaving and bobbing around the Dominant chord, (F Major). The Flute and Clarinet introduction play seven different motifs, interweaving with counterpoint, musically connoting the dual natures of Christ--fully God, and fully man. An SSA trio opens the piece recounting the creation story. A bass solo shortly follows, introducing John the baptizer's story and purpose. Soon, the anthem breaks out into full SSATB illustrating Christ's life and purpose for our salvation. The final coda is the great Doxology, sung in 5 parts, accompanied by the Flute and Clarinet, and the entire congregation (or audience) is invited to sing along with the familiar tune.

His songwriter friend Shih Shiong Lee (Peter Lee) and lyricist Wai Man Leung (Lin Xi) rushed up a new song as a wedding present for him. This then-untitled song was first sung in Jacky Cheung's concert with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in March that year. Only till the live concert album Love and Symphony was released a month after the concert, the song was given the title Your Name, My Surname, which popularity soon soared among Hong Kong pop music charts, and later winning many music awards of the year in 1996. In the choral arrangement by Alex Tam, the chorus section and the introduction for strings are exchanged here. There are also a few modulations so both male and female voices have moments to sing the melody. Then by an unexpected stroke of luck, I stumbled across this one in a choral book, and was transported back to high school to the first time I had heard it: it was the first time I ever heard one of my best friends sing. Then, as now, I was moved by the lyrics and the easy folk tune melody, and in that instant, I knew. This was the one. From there, the vocal parts seemed to write themselves. I contributed vocals of my own in order to heighten the impact of the cluster chords and to further enhance the song's themes. I hope the music provides as much joy as it did for me writing it and singing it.

One of the most loved Christmas tunes made famous by the ultimate crooner, Bing Crosby, I'll Be Home For Christmas resonates with me every year as I have been living in the UK since 2012. It speaks of the desire to return home for the special time of year to share in the celebration with family and friends. But in a small twist, the last line of the song is if only in my dreams, leaving us to consider those around the world who are displaced from their loved ones.This arrangement is in a simple ballad style and features the melody in the soprano and tenor voices. The harmony is chromatic in parts, but with good voice leading to assist with the learning of this jazz-infused tune. The bass part mainly anchors down the harmony, with a dm consonant aiming to recreate a jazz double bass sound. Soft consonants and sweet do sounds will ensure a smooth ballad style. Ranges are within a standard choir set, so this should be performable by most community choirs with basic reading ability. Beautifully laid out in A4 size, the score and parts are easy to read and available NOW for digital download. We suggest you print on 80gsm paper, to ensure that the copies last longer in your bands library.
