And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights. (Gen 7:11-12 KJV)Quietly the first drops of rain begin to fall... One, two... The wind begins to stir, becoming audible. And in a moment it seems thousands of heavy raindrops fall upon the mountains and hills and plains, as though a veil of water had suddenly descended upon the earth from the heavens. Fountains of the Deep musically portrays the events of the Bible concerning the great waters in a tumultuous storm of notes thundering from the grand piano and percussion. Simultaneously, the choir calls out for help while being tossed by the tempestuous seas, swallowed by a great fish, and chased to the edge of the sea by Pharaoh.The text in Fountains of the Deep is a mixed narrative that combines scripture with an imagined exclamation at the cataclysmic events of the day. Still comes the rain, still comes the rain, never ceasing! Whether it was one man, thousands, or all of mankind, the Lord has chosen to use the great depths of the sea to do his Will. Edward Abiel Washburn (1819-1881), a noted American Episcopal clergyman who studied at both Harvard and Yale, and who served parishes in Newburyport, Massachusetts; Hartford, Connecticut; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and New York City. A noted preacher, he also translated Latin hymns as well as authoring a number of his own poems.In three verses, Washburn’s poem recalls the Bethlehem hillside where shepherds watched their flocks by night, the virgin mother Mary, the infant Jesus in the manger, the heavenly host singing “Gloria,†the bright star shining above, the arrival of the Magi, and more. Each unison verse, which may be assigned as written or at the director’s discretion, is followed by a chorus with full SATB voices singing “Glory to God! It is scored for SATB choir ( mainly one to three voice parts with small four-part sections ) together with keyboard accompaniment. It has been performed with piano but organ would work well too. Musically, it balances unison singing to create a sense of unity of expression with harmony to express the heightened sense of emotion of the Psalm. The piece was premiered at Dundonald Church, Rayne's Park, UK on 12th November 2023 as part of their remembrance service.

Far up the west coast, in Aran and Clare, there's harpers to bring you a magical aire. I listened, enthralled, till the Winter came on, then pulled up my boots - and soon I was gone - searching for fortune for still I had none. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. I rested, by chance, at the close of the day, by a small rounded hill, where I happened to stray. And there, as the drowsiness over me stole, I dreamed of a woman with eyes black as coal - And the fortune she held was the song of my soul. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! Irish/Scottish folk singing is a wonderful tradition spanning hundreds of years and includes subjects ranging from romance to resistance. Many songs were created and subsequently preserved in pubs and other informal gatherings. Will You Go, Lassie, Go, also known as Wild Mountain Thyme, is basically a love song. The imagery comes alive, however, if one has had the pleasure of seeing in person the blooming heather (another alternate title) mentioned in the lyrics. When in bloom, it blankets hillsdises with it's distinctive purple hue. Heather was also used extensively in the process of thatching, roofs, a process that continues to this day. Though more difficult to work with than some other plants, there is a movement to preserve heather thatching. This arrangement is for SATB choir with piano accompaniment and features a female soloist at the beginning and the end. Your choir will love singing this accessible arrangement.

Written during the coronavirus pandemic, the poem expresses how quarantine can serve as a conduit for healing, how words of comfort flow despite barriers, and how the paralysis of sheltering in place generates creative movement. The music and poem draw inspiration from ancient forest wisdom, shown musically with a pentatonic scale. The tight harmonies of Locrian mode bind moss to stone and stream to its own flow. Then vocal expression bursts forth with lush harmonies as singers serenade from balconies, sharing compassion through music. Returning to the pentatonic scale, we overcome obstacles and send generosity beyond our ancient and modern world into the celestial realm. The man describes how well-mannered and well educated she was, regrets never having had her, whishes he could stay on his natal hill and wait for her, nicknames her a Cow's tear-drop(in Burundian and Rwandan traditions, cows are the most sacred and respected of demesticated animals) and describes her gaze as the Sunset(Yasa n'irirenga).It's a beautiful story, and I was pleased to set it to music that values its depth and sense of longing, sometimes using minor versions of the melody (traditionally pentatonic) to accentuate the nostalgia and the longing he has for his Cow's tear-drop.For you all that want to pronounce the words in Kirundi well, I have added a YouTube video of a famous Burundian Singer interpreting this song. Hope it helps with the combined vowels (nk, kw, ry etc).Enjoy this one. Definitely one of my all-time favorite arrangements.

Mist-Covered Mountains is a very accessible SATB choral arrangement of the gorgeous 19th century Gaelic song Chì Mi Na Mòrbheanna (usually translated as The Mist-Covered Mountains of Home). The original song was written in 1856 by John Cameron, and since then has entered the folk tradition. It was made famous by The Rankin Family in the 1970s, and many other folk artists have covered it. This arrangement was written for Belsize Community Choir in London, and is well-suited to community choirs. The refrain is in the original Gaelic, but the verses are in English.The Gaelic refrain is easily learned and a pronunciation guide is included. The tune passes among different voice parts, and is sometimes sung in unison. The (optional) piano gives solidity and depth – like the mountains themselves. There is also a part for soprano recorder. If performing the song a cappella, start at bar 7, end at bar 86, and leave out the third beat of bars 38, 54, 70 and 78.

Sometimes mistakenly believed to be a traditional Christmas carol from the West Indies, the words and music for Calypso Carol were written in 1964 by one of the United Kingdom’s leading contemporary hymn writers, Michael Perry. At that time Perry was a student at Oak Hill Theological College and he wrote the song for a college carols concert. It became famous virtually by accident when Cliff Richard, who was hastily assembling a selection for radio, included the song in his program to replace a missing recording. It was subsequently included in the 1969 songbook Youth Praise 2. Calypso Carol steadily gained popularity and, in 2005, was voted one of the top ten choices in the BBC Songs of Praise poll of favourite carols for that year.
