It all began with the idea one morning that the other tune for Nahum Tate's carol While shepherds watched is, of course, the Yorkshire ditty On Ilkley moor bar t'hat. Well, as the afternoon progressed, other tunes got added, resulting in a curious potpourri for choir and piano. The choir gets to sing On Ilkla Moor, the Este psalter tune known to all, and also Auld Lang Syne. The second voice, in its madrigalian way, gets a sly English cadence!. Meanwhile, the piano gets some sly references to Sing a song of sixpence and Scotland the brave. I sang it in G on this mp3, to fit my multitrack range, but versions are available on sheetmusicplus in G (ATBB), C (SATB) (fairly high for the sopranos) and Bflat (SATB) (fairly low for the basses) It can also be seen as a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRXrzrSY-Vw === While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. Fear not! said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled mind. Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and all mankind. To you, in David's town, this day Is born of David's line A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign: The heavenly babe you there shall find To human view displayed, All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid. Thus spake the seraph and forthwith appeared a shining throng of angels praising God who thus addressed their joyful song All glory be to God on high, And to the Earth be peace; Good will henceforth from heaven to men, Begin and never cease!.

We have had to manage life with new guidelines and restrictions, while trying to keep ourselves and others safe. This work attempts to put time in perspective, with a message of hope for recovery, and a better understanding of how to move forward with passion and grace. The message is not just for life in a pandemic, but for life, in general. Hopefully, this work can stand the “test of timeâ€, finding a meaningful place in the repertoire.

Tate was an Anglo-Irish poet, hymn writer and lyricist, who became Poet Laureate in 1692. He’s best known for The History of King Lear, his 1681 adaptation of Shakespeare's play. He also wrote the libretto for Henry Purcell's timeless opera, Dido and Aeneas. The traditional melody of While Shepherds Watched is well-known, but this new setting brings in a wealth of new musical material. This is a tuneful work and is sure to be enjoyed by your singers and audiences alike. It is in 2/2 time throughout but journeys through several contrasting keys. It’s also available for SSA and SAT choirs with keyboard accompaniment.  There’s an a cappella section in the middle and more suited to experienced singers. The piano part is not difficult and should be within the reach of any competent pianist. The piece: Chorale: Messianicum, Prophetia, was not originally composed as a sacred work. Rather, it was an exercise; written to practice aural and written theory while I was a student at the University of Wyoming. So, its roots were those of a Vocalise. Be that as it may, the harmonies are reminiscent of the music for Mass in the old Catholic cathedrals and churches. Therefore I added a text taken from Isaiah 53: 3-5 from the the Vulgate to complement the music.There are moments where the music appears to be at odds with natural inflection of the Latin language and this is not an error. Though there is a time signature indicating a meter, this is to facilitate greater ease in conducting and reading the music. It is very much in free time and thus I invite the conductors and choirs performing this work to please refrain from following the metronome mark as if it were God reincarnate.Finally, a thank you to all musicians who suffer for my madness, the conductors and directors for taking a chance, my fellow composers for the inspiration they give, and my friends and family for the loving support they give to one, who for better of for worse, works hard at nothing all day.8 1/2 X 11 pre-prepped for Booklet Printing

Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1487909). Composer’s Notes Anim Zemiros was composed in 1985 while I was a doctoral student of Martin Boykan at Brandeis University. The initial fugal theme was inspired by the melody from the third movement of Beethoven's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132, also known as Heiliger Dankgesang. My theme resembles Beethoven's melody in two ways: it aurally approximates the rhythms of his theme and it also takes the contour of Beethoven's melody and inverts it, also in an approximated way. This is where the similarities to Beethoven's theme end, forAnim Zemiros is most certainly not composed in the Lydian mode! Rather, it is composed in a chromatically saturated musical language. Although Anim Zemiros may be used for the Jewish Musaf Sabbath Service, it was conceived as a concert piece. In the synagogue, this hymn is sung responsively by the cantor and congregation. The responsive nature of this hymn is what inspired the use of contrapuntal passages alternating with homophonic ones. Anim Zemiros begins with a statement of the initial fugal theme in the basses followed by a response at the interval of a fifth in the altos during which the basses present the counter theme. After a brief episode, the same thing happens in the tenor and soprano voices while the basses and altos present new contrapuntal melodies. A brief, contrasting, calm homophonic chorale passage ensues (a textural foreshadowing of both the loud climax and the hushed closing of the piece). This is followed by an extended development section (like ones from sonata-allegro movements) in which ideas from both the contrapuntal and homophonic sections are fragmented and stratified. Shifting time signatures provide added momentum to this music that leads to the homophonic climax that follows. Next comes an “anti-fugue” in which the initial fugal theme is presented backwards, as is the fugal form itself, moving from four voices, to three and finally to two. However, rather than moving to one voice as at the opening of the piece (which would have been a very predictable thing to do), the piece ends with a reminiscence of the calm homophonic chorale. Ashkenazic pronunciation was chosen over Sephardic for two reasons. I wished to have the s sound on the Hebrew letter sov rather than the t sound. In addition, Ashkenazic pronunciation is considered to be somewhat archaic since Sephardic is used in modern Hebrew. I felt this gave me artistic license to compose vocal lines containing correct or incorrect syllabic stress for purely musical effect. Possibly unique: an Easter (or more properly Good Friday) hymn for six-part choir, in which the choir is actually the accompaniment for a piano solo of almost hyponotic dissonance in comparison. The result of superimposing these elements is strangely beautiful. The composer offers the following commentary: I guess most people seeing a piece with a choir and a piano would think of it – not unreasonably – as a choir accompanied by a piano. This piece is subtly different: the way in which I can best explain what was in my mind when I composed it would be to describe it as a piano solo accompanied by choir. While the choir sings music that feels like a slow pavane the pianist plays a series of arpeggios and cluster chords around another relatively simple but unlinked melody. The combined effect is almost hypnotic and if the singers think of the pianist as their accompanist they will almost certainly lose the plot of what they are singing! On first hearing it may appear that the piano and the choir have little in common but the concept is simple enough. Both choir and pianist are meditating on the same theme, but coming at it from totally different directions. There is no formula to the way in which we approach the cross of Christ. We come as we are, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation, meeting at the foot of the cross. The juxtaposition of choir and piano represents that meeting and the cluster chords that the pianist plays reinforce a sense of brokenness that is essential to a proper understanding of the music. I have dedicated this to Canon Andrew White and the Christians of Iraq, knowing that their situation seems impossible in the face of the evil that walks that land, but trusting in the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ to do right even if from our earthly perspective we are unable to discern what right is.

The church had cleared the return of the choir, post pandemic, and it was my first Sunday of singing in well over a year. That Sunday as I recited the creed something happened when I reached the line “And His Kingdom Will Have No Endâ€. Was it louder? Was it spoken with greater conviction? Something was different! Maybe it was just me. I'm not sure but all I know is that every Sunday thereafter it had the same impact on me. Within a few weeks I decided to compose a choral piece about that very line. I had to! The Music For the most part the harmony and structure are traditional but do contain harmonic structures with a contemporary flair. The arrangement is refrain, verse, refrain, verse, bridge and then refrain. The first and 3rd refrains are highly similar while the second refrain contains a soprano section descant while featuring the bass's carrying the main melody. The overall intent of the music is that on every return to the refrain, it is louder than the previous refrain. This signifies the singers confidence growing, in the existence of God's Kingdom, after each verse. With that said the piece starts quietly, almost being heard from a distance. The refrain lyrics speak to the hope that we carry for God's kingdom while the verses speak to God and Jesus in a more intimate way. The bridge speaks to the strength of the Kingdom and then leads back to the opening refrain, now in double forte. The high point in the piece is reached where volume, emotion and a significant ritard occur at the phrase “we'll be togetherâ€. From there the piece decreases in volume ending in a quiet confidence repeating “No end, no end, no endâ€.

The text is from a poem written by our older son, Matthew. He has a gift to express ideas and emotions in words that I do not, and I was very pleased and excited when he gave me permission to set his poem to music. The music is in an overall ternary form, with the fiery outer sections tempered with a more spiritual middle segment. The piano plays an important but supporting accompanying role. The music is somewhat tonally oriented, with an E minor basis for the more passionate outer sections. These sections also require the choir to sing some chromatic melodic and harmonic lines and constructions. The rhythm also varies somewhat, asking the chorus to express these emotional portions of the piece. The flowing middle section has a more consistent tempo and is centered in C major. This key seems to have the qualities of innocence and peace, which offsets the more restless and fiery E minor of the rest of this work. This more meditative center section also has a more triadic basis than the somewhat contrapuntal textures surrounding it. It invites the music performers and listeners to experience the joy of Music and Art, while the closing music and text sing of the passion and energy of the artistic experience.
