About the ComposerBorn in the prominent Hall family of Coffeyville, Kansas on May 17, 1919, Verna May Hall (birth name) emerged as a motion picture actress, recording artist, television and radio host of “The Word with Dr. Verna Hall Linzey,” and “Operation Freedom.” She was a bestselling author, master of biblical languages, Bible translator, and speaker. In the motion picture Iniquity, which is a modern version of the account of David and Bathsheba, her role was that of the lead juror. The songwriting and poetry of Verna May Hall Linzey portrays her philosophy of life that made her an American English icon. Verna received the 2006 “Best Non-Fiction of the Year” Award from the San Diego Christian Writers’ Guild for her book, The Baptism with the Holy Spirit, She also authored The Gifts of the Spirit, Spirit Baptism, and Pearls of Gold (The Poetry of Verna Hall Linzey). She received the Gold Record Award for “Best Vocals in Southern Gospel Music” from the International Biographical Centre for her CD, O Blessed Jesus in 2012. This album included the Triumphant Quartet and Sisters singing backup vocals. The Triumphant Quartet was nominated for a Grammy Award and has been voted as the number one quartet in Southern Gospel Music for several years in a row.In 2015, Verna received the Best-Selling Author’s Award from the National Critics’ Choice as the translator of Proverbs for the Modern English Version Bible. The MEV has been in the top ten-selling English Bible translations in 2015 according to the Evangelical Christian Publishing Association. Verna is the Chief Editor of the New Tyndale Version Bible translation.On Sunday, May 8, 2016, a commemorative edition of the Modern English Version Bible was presented to the Queen, Her Majesty Elizabeth II, at Windsor Castle by Verna Linzey, the translation committee, and her publisher. Verna was subsequently named “Mother of the Fleet” by Admiral Frederick C. Johnson, USN (Ret.) and his staff of Navy and Marine officers at MCAS Miramar in San Diego, California. In 2018, she posthumously received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Her husband, Captain Stanford E. Three Evening Canticles were written as part of a setting of choral evensong for Church of the Holy Apostles - Anglican, Fort Worth, Texas. Metrical, mostly homophonic, and conservative in technical challenges and ranges, these canticles are accessible for small choirs and those of moderate ability, yet musically satisfying for large and accomplished groups. Phos Hilaron (“O Gladsome Lightâ€) is one of the earliest known Christian hymns (ca. 3rd-4th century) recorded outside of the Bible. Intended to be sung at the kindling of lights in the evening, it is sometimes known as the “lamp-lighting hymn†and has been adopted by some Anglican bodies as an optional invitatory canticle immediately preceding the psalm(s) appointed for the day.Magnificat (The Song of Mary) is a scriptural canticle based on an account in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, visits her cousin  Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist, who will prophetically proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and subjection to God’s will, and Mary responds, “My soul doth magnify the Lord ... for he that is mighty hath magnified me ... and his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.†The Magnificat is said or sung immediately after the first lesson (scripture reading) in the service of evening prayer. Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is also a scriptural canticle taken from Luke (2:29-32).  Simeon, a devout Jew, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of redemption of the firstborn son, Simeon takes the child into his arms and says “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace ... for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.†The Nunc Dimittis is said or sung after the second lesson in evening prayer.Texts for these settings are from The Book of Common Prayer (2019), Traditional Language Edition, according to the use of the Anglican Church in North America, and they are largely the texts of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England.©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Stephen Chatman’s choral settings are broad in scope and tone; the tone painting evokes the stunning landscapes and their diverse communities. Both his original texts and those of poet Tara Wohlberg capture the enchanted worlds of North, South, East, and West.1. Arise is the short opening of this suite of five pieces, and is set to glorious homophonic music with rising motives in the lower voices.2. What's Cookin'? takes its sweet time tantalizing the listener with all the menu items of a truly Southern feast. Music, set to a slow tempo in swing eighths, makes the recitation tempting, if not downright sultry.3. Bugs is a soundscape of insects and their songs. Precise vocal effects make this challenging but also whimsical, and the result is pure fun.4. Love, O Love recalls an old-fashioned love letter in which the writer compares the beloved to the moon and the sun and pledges eternal love. The music begins with lush chords sung together, moves to an over-arching soprano line with gentle undulations in the lower parts, and finishes with the choir singing together again, Love shines on you, my only one.5. A perfectly apt finale to this choral suite, Kentucky Derby begins with a nod to My Old Kentucky Home, and then it's off to the races, literally. The text of the suite is declaimed rapidly in patter-song format, almost as if the chorus is calling race as it progresses. A tour de force, and truly, ..a wild ride!

Feet o' Jesus (From the cantata FEET OF JESUS by Judith Cloud (text by Langston Hughes)Feet of Jesus is a cantata for mixed chorus, soprano saxophone, soprano and baritone soloists and organ. It is made up of seven movements: 1) Feet of Jesus; 2) Prayer; 3) Shout; 4) Litany/Sinner; 5) Fire; 6) Angels Wings; 7) Spirituals. It is approximately eighteen minutes in length. It has been performed by church choirs, professional choirs and amateur choirs, as well as university choirs.I was very fortunate to have Anders Paulsson believe in the beauty and significance of Feet of Jesus. He promoted it in Sweden and returned to the United States to perform it in San Francisco. In May of 1997, the Saint Jacobs Chamber Choir under the direction of Gary Graden recorded Feet of Jesus, along with some other original works by Anders Paulsson and arrangements of spirituals. I requested that the soloists be African-Americans, Marymal Holmes and John Williams. The cross-cultural exchange was a vibrant one and proved to be enlightening. The very idea of what was truly considered spiritual in music was put to the question and answered admirably by Gary Graden and his marvelous Swedish choir. The BIS Northern Lights CD was released under the title Spirituals.
