The 40-page score is a choral symphony with a powerful lesson to modern people, based on an old Danish folk song about the young super-hero Ramund. The score is dense with contents, both musically and lyrically, and alone for that reason, the 8-minute performance takes an advanced choir.The original folk song dates back to the Viking age and consist of many episodes ofRamund's life, almost like a personal saga. Some have undoubtedly been added later,making the total number of stanzas go up around 50, but the main idea of the song isto report about a young lad, whose ideas of what is right for him to do or not doare completely unaffected by other people's opinions, including those of royalties andcelebrities. The stories are in many regards comparable to those of Beowolf.Although the stories generally are dramatic and bloody, Ramund always retains hiscool attitude and shows how unimpressed he is with power demonstrations, even hisown when he is provoked to use his strength. It is a common element throughout thestories that Ramund detests evil and aggression, and he goes to great lengths to fightpower abusers and aggressive elements. He just wants to live in peace and not haveto be bothered by all those who like to abuse power!Included in this presentation for piano and 8 voices are 11 stanzas from what is believedto be original, in English translation, with focus on clarity of meaning, more so thanpoetical rules and rhymes. The first ruling concept has been to obtain clarity and agreat fit to the music. The second concept has been to add the inspiration this old folksong has created in the mind of a modern rebel who would like to see some ofRamund's attitude to power and power abusers put into action in our modern corruptsociety. Maybe in a less bloody version, but definitely with a similar effect! The added2 stanzas and the attached coda, as well as the added lyrics to the intermezzos and theincorporated commentaries to the action should serve that purpose.In addition, the original tune itself, as well as the lyrics and the intermezzo, haveinspired some musical development throughout the piece, to further accentuate themeaning and the messages about respecting each other, standing together againstabuse, and not letting power abusers get away with their crimes.The 8 voices cover ranges as follows: First sopranos: C4 through Bb5 (possibly G5); Second sopranos: C4 through E5; All altos: G3 through D5; All tenors: C3 through G#4(possibly F#4); First basses: F2 through D4; Second basses: D2 through B3

It was one of those accidents where you find something useful when you’re looking for something else. While reading on the nature of worship, a particular blog article ended with Adoniram Judson’s early 19th Century baptismal poem, Come Holy Spirit, Dove Divine. The flowing text called out (at least to me!) for a musical setting. Accordingly, some melodic and harmonic ideas began to percolate in my thoughts. However, before getting very far along in writing a tune, there were two surprises in store. First many others had already set the text to music before (with a multitude of tunes) going back to at least 1833. Second, despite being a Baptist for over forty years, I discovered that this hymn has been in the Baptist Hymnal since 1956 yet I have no recollection of every singing it! Well, chagrined at my ignorance, I carried on writing a new melody and harmony for this deserving text. I sought to make it friendly to congregational singers while still containing rich and sing-able harmonies and so aimed for a four-part hymn-style form. However, as I suspect my ignorance of the hymn is a common condition, a fresh and modern tune which would be at home in varied musical styles and have popular appeal was also pursued. The result is a delightful and uplifting tune, easy to sing, with an optimistic and forward momentum, commensurate with the meaning of believers’ baptism, Buried with Him in baptism; raised to walk in new life. The music is flexible in application to many church music styles: praise team and band, choir and organ, congregation and piano, or mix and match to fit your needs. May you find Come, Holy Spirit, Dove Divine, singing a much needed text, a means for your congregation to joyfully join with new believers in celebration of their baptism!

A vivid and at times raucous celebration of Saturnalia, in Latin, for an ensemble of voices and instruments (including various percussion, woodwind and brass instruments). The sound sample is a sung performance by the composer with an electronic preview of the instruments. Further explanations: Song for Saturnalia - a raucous and fun romp - in whole tones (since there is scant evidence of the types of scales used in those days - whole tones just seem to work in this context). The Latin words make references to relatively modern times but the spirit of Saturnalia is timeless, after all. The pileum (also written pilleum) is the little cap that slave wore during Saturnalia to show they were free men and women on that day - they would point to their cap and say libertus sum (I am a free person) and omnes aequales sumus (we are all equal). Campestrius is based on campester - a plain or place of clear ground (Blair is the Celtic equivalent word - a forest clearing!) Candelarius is based on candela - a taper or candle - ie something burning hence Brandt (yes, I know he’s earlier than the other two politicians, but, hey, it’s all a bit of anachronistic fun!)].
