On Resistance: A Prayer for Those Who Peacefully Protest was composed, as the title suggests, to speak words of encouragement to those who engage or wish to engage in nonviolent protest. As daunting as it may seem to speakout against the global war machine, it is becoming increasingly imperative that we do so, as the horrors of war seem to multiply day after day. It seems that the most vulnerable of humanity are the ones who suffer the most in the face of unending war, and it is on their behalf that we must speak out. To do so in any other way than the way of peaceful protest in the tradition of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, and Jesus Christ of Nazareth simply escalates violence and pours fuel on the flames of war. On the other hand, when we engage in nonviolent protest, we promote peace and become, as Jesus said, children of God. Blessed are the peacemakers indeed.

Based on the events of 9/11 and including audio clips from where the airport officials indicated the carnage on board one of the planes that struck the former World Trade Centers 1 and 2 on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001. I was 12 and a half years old at the time, and my brother was 10 and a half. Before he woke up, he had nightmares about flames. That was really creepy. The song centers on the trauma that the elementary school students across the street from the destruction in Manhattan faced as they witnessed the planes strike the towers, and everything that ensued. It uses the opening melody of Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto, repeated and with the addition of drums, a wild bass solo, and some electric guitar riffs. It's a little painful even for me to listen to. I listened to it a lot this evening before posting it for sale.Stephen Sullivan- 02/20/2024Southeast Indiana *.

A delightful early opus from one of the most individual English songwriters of the Twentieth Century, Roger Quilter (1877-1953). The texts are taken from the works of Seventeenth Century English poet Robert Herrick (ca 1591-1674) whose lyrics Quilter also set to music in his Opus 8 song-cycle To Julia (1905). I chose to use these texts after listening to a friend of mine speak about the death of her son.I became keenly aware of her personal and genuine feelings of rage against God, which were so similar to David’s Why do You hide Your face and forget our persecution and our oppression? Christ’s My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? and Elie Wiesel’s Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever. I realized that a far more difficult question (and perhaps more deeply personal) than that of asking God to forgive us is Can we forgive God?After asking that intimate and bold question, the words of Micah recall that peace, based on justice, will come one day: you shall be at peace and unafraid.…nations shall not lift up sword against nation….you shall bear fruit in justice and peace.
