English.Northwest Passage is a set of “poetic landscapes†that reflects on three elements of the great Northwest of the United States—rivers, mountains, and prairies. Each sonic reflection (movement) combines to form a larger image, not unlike someone standing on a vista and seeing rivers, mountains, and prairies—each distinct, but part of one vast expanse.The work is scored for two versions: mixed chorus and piano, or mixed chorus, wind quintet, and string quartet. The harmonic vocabulary of the work maintains an uncomplicated, transparent (“organicâ€) approach in describing nature. The melodic vocabulary immediately pulls the listener's eye to the image, and rhythm is used as the underlying spark that is subtly ever changing and unpredictable. These three poetic landscapes should be performed without applause between movements.1. A Willow by the River|William Carlos Williams was a medical practitioner, pediatrician, and an avid writer. He wrote short stories, novels, plays, critical essays and, of course, poetry. The subjects of his writing were often “local†images, and he preferred to see the world “as it is,†without unnecessary trappings or “airs.†He was an important mentor to many younger poets of his day. “Willow Poem†(A Willow by the River) has no rhyme scheme but is comprised of fourteen individual lines. The willow is the focus of the poem (by its title and content) and how it never changes but will always “be.†The river represents, among other things, life quickly moving by and in a constant state of motion.2. Mountains|Marjorie Seiffert (who often used the pseudonyms Elijah Hay or Angela Cypher) led an incredibly full and balanced life. College introduced her to a world beyond her domestic and civic life and, as a result, she wanted to experience self-empowerment and independence. She prided herself in being a spouse, mother and maintaining a full slate of professional appearances and commissions for writing. Her poetry is vivid, keenly “visual,†and full of fast-paced, tightly woven ideas. “Mountain trails†(Mountains) was written at Glacier Park, Montana in September 1917.3. The Prairie|John Hay was an American statesman who was personal assistant to Abraham Lincoln. He also served as U. S. Secretary of State and Ambassador to Great Britain. He was a cultivated man of letters and wrote poetry which was straightforward in design and delivery. Nature was often the subject of his creative output. -Z. More, the existing vocal arrangements I've heard are quite steady and not so rhythmic.So I tried to add some movement: there is a musical introduction with little lyrics and then we move on to the main theme, where the bass gives rhythm to the main melody.Shortly after, with a Queen-inspired variation coming from Bohemian Rhapsody the score modulates in a close key, to underline the singing of the brothers of the song's sad heroin and immediately after the theme softens to leave room to the sad mother heralding the coming tragedy.A tragedy that is sung immediately afterwards, in minor, and then returns to the main melody until the finale, where after a choral phrase we return to the main theme.

The initial fugal theme was inspired by the melody from the third movement of Beethoven's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132, also known as Heiliger Dankgesang. My theme resembles Beethoven's melody in two ways: it aurally approximates the rhythms of his theme and it also takes the contour of Beethoven's melody and inverts it, also in an approximated way. This is where the similarities to Beethoven's theme end, forAnim Zemiros is most certainly not composed in the Lydian mode! Rather, it is composed in a chromatically saturated musical language. Although Anim Zemiros may be used for the Jewish Musaf Sabbath Service, it was conceived as a concert piece. In the synagogue, this hymn is sung responsively by the cantor and congregation. The responsive nature of this hymn is what inspired the use of contrapuntal passages alternating with homophonic ones. Anim Zemiros begins with a statement of the initial fugal theme in the basses followed by a response at the interval of a fifth in the altos during which the basses present the counter theme. After a brief episode, the same thing happens in the tenor and soprano voices while the basses and altos present new contrapuntal melodies. A brief, contrasting, calm homophonic chorale passage ensues (a textural foreshadowing of both the loud climax and the hushed closing of the piece). This is followed by an extended development section (like ones from sonata-allegro movements) in which ideas from both the contrapuntal and homophonic sections are fragmented and stratified. Shifting time signatures provide added momentum to this music that leads to the homophonic climax that follows. Next comes an “anti-fugue” in which the initial fugal theme is presented backwards, as is the fugal form itself, moving from four voices, to three and finally to two. However, rather than moving to one voice as at the opening of the piece (which would have been a very predictable thing to do), the piece ends with a reminiscence of the calm homophonic chorale. Ashkenazic pronunciation was chosen over Sephardic for two reasons. I wished to have the s sound on the Hebrew letter sov rather than the t sound. In addition, Ashkenazic pronunciation is considered to be somewhat archaic since Sephardic is used in modern Hebrew. I felt this gave me artistic license to compose vocal lines containing correct or incorrect syllabic stress for purely musical effect. Das Gebet selbst ist ein Plädoyer dafür, dass Gottes Wille in jedem von uns getan wird. Infolgedessen sollte während der gesamten Arbeit eine aufrichtige und ernsthafte Stimmung im Vordergrund stehen. Die meisten Christen kennen das Gebet auswendig in ihrer eigenen Sprache und es wird heute von jeder christlichen Tradition verwendet. Ich habe die globale Version für drei verschiedene Sprachen geschrieben: Englisch, Deutsch und Koreanisch. Diese Hymne ist im Stil des Responsorial-Gesangs gehalten: Ein Solist singt eine Linie, der der Chor oder die Klavierbegleitung folgen. PROGRAM NOTES As of the present writing, this choral tone poem had been gestating for over thirty years, and the concept and harmonies for it for over forty years. In the 1980s I began to work with the latter two in my brief orchestral piece Little Sea Nocturne. When reading the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), I am most struck by how musical they are. When recited aloud they exhibit their own rhythmic sense. I was eager to incorporate those rhythms into my music. I had long been familiar with his poem The City In the Sea and began to sketch choral passages for the present choral tone poem in the 1990s. It took me until 2022 to complete it because I required many more years of experience at my craft to do so to lead into out of the choruses. In 2012 I completed a seven-minute unaccompanied version of the choruses with music unique to and unifying it simply called The City In the Sea. In composing The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem, my goal was to write a piece that, while steeped in tradition, sounds unlike anything in the literature that had come before it. The result is an original hybrid work that successfully and memorably combines salient aspects of the tonal, atonal, and modal musical languages into an organic whole. George Perle coined the term “twelve-tone tonality†to describe the music of Alban Berg and composers influenced by him such as Luigi Dallapiccola. The last title of which I am aware that accomplishes anything remotely related to what I am trying to accomplish musically in this choral tone poem is the piece Paradiso Choruses by Donald Martino (1974). However, I take twelve-tone tonality in entirely other directions in my work. That the duration of The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem came out to be thirteen minutes seems appropriate for piece about a sunken city. Rather than write program notes that narrate how the music unfolds I will simply shout out the most memorable aspects of what careful listeners will discern: a recurring heartbeat motif; shifting polychordal harmonies; echo technique; rhythmic diminutions and augmentations; an a cappella chorus featuring those harmonies with a surprisingly memorable recuring theme on top; sensuous flute duets; string section underpinnings by way of either sustained passages or wave-like gestures; tritone-related melodies, harmonies, and tone centers; several strategically placed grand pauses; tritone-related modal-sounding passages; melodic and chord clusters, especially the two climactic ones. Egli stesso fu non soltanto un grande professore, ma un artista dei più dotati. La sua musica da chiesa non ha meno maestà di quella di Durante, tocca il cuore e fa nascere degli slanci di tenera devozione. Il suo Miserere a due cori è una composizione tanto notevole per l'elevatezza dei sentimenti che l'hanno dettata, quanto per la purezza di stile in cui si riconoscono le tracce della scuola cantoria romana in cui studiò. Nella sua musica sacra nello stile accompagnato e concertato, de Leo conserva la semplicità e si fa ammirare per la bellezza dell'espressione, come l'Ave Maris Stella per voce di soprano e orchestra o il Credo a quattro. Egualmente notevole nel genere teatrale, de Leo è sempre nobile, spesso patetico e appassionato ed è con questi mezzi, molto semplici, che perviene a grandi effetti. Infaticabile nella professione, passava spesso la maggior parte delle notti a comporre e si trovava sempre in vena- Amava le sue opere, ma rendeva giustizia al merito dei suoi rivali quando occorreva. Morì rimpianto da tutti, lasciando a lungo il ricordo di sé e delle sue opere, nonché della scuola di cui fu uno dei fondatori. Considerazioni sull'artista Leo condivide col suo predecessore Alessandro Scarlatti e i contemporanei Nicola Porpora, Francesco Durante e Francesco Feo, la gloria di aver fondato la scuola di Napoli, da cui sono usciti, durante tutto un secolo, una moltitudine di compositori drammatici di prim'ordine. Egli stesso fu non soltanto un grande professore, ma un artista dei più dotati. La sua musica da chiesa non ha meno maestà di quella di Durante, tocca il cuore e fa nascere degli slanci di tenera devozione. Il suo Miserere a due cori è una composizione tanto notevole per l'elevatezza dei sentimenti che l'hanno dettata, quanto per la purezza di stile in cui si riconoscono le tracce della scuola cantoria romana in cui studiò. Nella sua musica sacra nello stile accompagnato e concertato, de Leo conserva la semplicità e si fa ammirare per la bellezza dell'espressione, come l'Ave Maris Stella per voce di soprano e orchestra o il Credo a quattro. Egualmente notevole nel genere teatrale, de Leo è sempre nobile, spesso patetico e appassionato ed è con questi mezzi, molto semplici, che perviene a grandi effetti. Anthem which was performed in King Henry the Seventh's Chappel at the Funeral of the most Noble & Victorious Prince John Duke of Marlborough By Giovanni Bononcini (1670-1747) transcribed by Guido Menestrina Il padre, Giovanni Maria Bononcini (Buononcini) (1642-1678), era stato violinista e compositore: attivo alla corte di Modena, aveva scritto un trattato, Musico prattico, pubblicato nel 1673. Il fratello minore di Giovanni, Antonio Maria, fu anch'egli musicista. Proprio dal padre Giovanni ricevette la prima educazione musicale; quando questi morì, nel 1678, divenne studente di Giovanni Paolo Colonna a Bologna, dove vennero eseguiti i suoi primi lavori. Proprio grazie al Colonna entrò a far parte dell'Accademia dei Filarmonici in veste di compositore. Nel 1685 aveva già preparato e pubblicato le sue prime opere. Ottenne nel 1688 il posto di musicista presso la basilica di San Petronio, e più tardi divenne maestro di cappella nella chiesa di San Giovanni in Monte. Sempre a Bologna fece la conoscenza del librettista Silvio Stampiglia, assieme al quale, tra il 1692 e il 1696, produrrà cinque opere. A partire dal 1692 si recò a Milano, Roma (dove fu apprezzato e sostenuto da Filippo II Colonna e dalla sua consorte Olimpia Pamphilj) e Venezia; infine, dal 1698 al 1711 si stabilì a Vienna, dove godette i favori degli imperatori Leopoldo I e Giuseppe I. Di passaggio a Berlino nel 1702, incontrò Georg Friedrich Händel, di quindici anni più giovane di lui, di cui riconobbe il talento precoce: lo avrebbe rincontrato alcuni anni più tardi. Dal 1714 al 1719 fu di nuovo a Roma, al servizio di Johann Wenzel, Conte di Gallas, Ambasciatore dell'Imperatore d'Austria a Roma, molto noto per il suo amore per la musica. Al Conte di Gallas, Bononcini dedicò la Favola Pastorale Erminia, rappresentata al Teatro della Pace nella Stagione del Carnevale del 1719. Il dramma musicale ebbe grandissimo successo sia per la musica, sia per gli interpreti, fra cui si segnalarono Domenico Gizzi (1687-1758), Musico Soprano della Real Cappella di Napoli ed il celebre contralto napoletano Francesco Vitale. Sempre nella Stagione del Carnevale 1719 al Teatro della Pace, Bononcini rappresentò il dramma per musica L'Etearco, dal librettista Silvio Stampiglia dedicato alla Contessa Ernestina di Gallas, moglie dell'Ambasciatore austriaco. Anche in questo dramma per musica Domenico Gizzi e Francesco Vitale fecero apprezzare tutte le spezie più ricercate del virtuosismo canoro. Poi, dal 1720 si stabilì a Londra, sotto la protezione del John Churchill, I duca di Marlborough. Qui si esibì anche al violoncello in numerosi concerti, molto apprezzati dall'aristocrazia inglese. Divenne membro della prestigiosa Royal Academy of Music.[senza fonte] Il pubblico londinese era, all'epoca, totalmente ignorante dell'opera italiana, e Händel stava muovendo i primi passi della sua prestigiosa carriera. Fra i due compositori si accese un forte spirito di competizione, sia che collaborassero alla realizzazione della medesima impresa (i tre atti dell'opera Muzio Scevola furono composti il primo da Filippo Amadi, il secondo da Bononcini, il terzo da Händel, al fine di soddisfare tutti e tre gli artisti), sia che, più spesso, si impegnassero in produzioni rivali. Le opere di maggior successo di Bononcini in quegli anni furono Astarto (1720), Crispo (1722), Griselda (1722), che si rivelò un vero e proprio trionfo, Erminia (1723), Calfurnia (1724). A favore dell'italiano era anche una certa ostilità verso Händel dovuta alle sue origini tedesche e alla contemporanea presenza sul trono inglese della poco amata dinastia di Hannover. Ma nel 1727-1728 scoppiò uno scandalo che compromise il successo di Bononcini e lo costrinse a lasciare Londra: il compositore Antonio Lotti accusò il madrigale di Bononcini In una siepe ombrosa di essere un plagio di un brano dei suoi Duetti, terzetti e madrigali. Fuggito a Parigi nel 1733, a causa di speculazion.

The alto solo is straightforward, adhering to the original melody. The choir parts are moderately easy (with some divisi) and support the soloist for the most part; however, they are given the third stanza to sing unaccompanied. The brass parts are moderate in difficulty (1st trumpet is required to play a whole note D6 at the finale). A good pianist (late intermediate +) is required to play moderately fast scale passages, both hands, during a transitional section, as well as a number of thick chord passages and leaps.
