An energetic new setting of the classic sacred text, "Cantate Domino" was commissioned as a competition piece by maestro Rolandas Daugela for the Cantate Domino International Choral Festival and Competition of 2017.
The piece opens with a triumphant fanfare, accompanied by an energetic rhythmic figure in the tenors and basses. This first theme is contrasted by the second section - a warm, contemporary "benedicite" theme, followed by a lyrical, folk-inspired "quia mirabilia". The final section is an exciting reprise of the first theme, but this time the tenors and basses carry the fanfare in four-part harmony while the sopranos and altos provide the driving accompaniment. In the final bars of the piece, the choir ascends in a powerful crescendo to a magnificent final cadence.
For a cappella SATB chorus with some divisi. Score includes piano reduction (for rehearsal). Also included: bonus version without piano reduction (for easier reading for singers).

Cantique de Jean Racine (Op. 11) is a work for mixed chorus and piano or organ by Gabriel Faur. Written by the nineteen-year-old composer in 1864-5, the piece won Faur the first prize when he graduated from the cole Niedermeyer and was first performed the following year on August 4,
1866, with accompaniment of strings and organ. It was first published around 1875 or 1876 (Schoen, Paris, as part of the series Echo des Matrises) and appeared in a version for orchestra (possibly by the composer) in 1906. The accompaniment has also been arranged for strings and harp by Flavio Regis Cunha.

This particular setting was composed with a small mixed-ability choir in mind, so the voices are mainly in two parts (men's and women's voices), splitting to four parts (SATB) occasionally, where the words suggest it. The style is reminiscent of the 19th century although the piano part does go into 20th century style syncopation at times.

As angels announce the birth of Jesus to the shepherds, Teresa foreshadows Jesus’ crucifixion by referring to him as Cordero (Lamb). She also affirms Jesus as the fully human (hombre también junto) and fully divine son of the sovereign God (Hijo de Dios Soberano). The piece opens with angels approaching from a distance singing pastores (shepherds) followed by joyful choral couplets. Several dualities weave together representing the oneness of the human and divine: harp and piano; Venezuelan joropo rhythm derived from Spanish dance; sixteenth century text and twenty-first century music; and major and Phrygian modes. A manuscript, ca. 1650, contains a version with the first line, “Sit you merry gentlemen†and the refrain, “O tidings of comfort and joy.†The earliest known printed edition of the carol is a London broadsheet dated 1760, in which the first line is the familiar “God rest ye merry, gentlemen.†By the 19th century, the carol was well-known, with Charles Dickens referencing it in his 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol.The phrase “God rest you merry†in the first line is an archaic idiom meaning “God grant you peace and happiness.†William Shakespeare used the phrase “rest you merry†in his plays, “As You Like It†and “Romeo and Juliet,†both from the 1590s; but Dickens recorded the phrase as “God bless you, merry gentlemen†in A Christmas Carol.The tune adapted for use in this arrangement was at the time of its notation a wordless, nameless melody noted in 1905 by folk song collector E. Quintrell from the singing of a Mr. Boaden in Cornwall, England. The tune was sent to Lucy Broadwood, editor of the Journal of the Folk-Song Society, who decided that it fit the ballad, “The Maid in Bedlam,†and published the tune and text together. The work received its premiere performance on November 13, 1999.The second movement, a modern translation of the tenth century hymn Veni Creator, is more lyrical in character and gives each section of the chorus a solo verse accompanied by obligato solo lines in the instrumental ensemble. The chosen ensemble of instruments (harp, soprano saxophone, double bass, piano and percussion) gives the work a decidedly American character. This work can also be performed with piano four-hands alone, or with piano four-hands and any combination of the ensemble instruments, with the two pianists omitting any doublings as indicated by the cues.
