On The Sunny Side Of The Street was composed in 1930 and was first heard in a Broadway revue which starred Harry Richman and Gertrude Lawrence. The first recordings also appeared in the same year, and it went on to be become a jazz standard, covered by Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, and Art Tatum amongst others. The final bars of this arrangement include a brief tribute to Count Basie, who also recorded the song. The singing needs to light and swinging, with good articulation to the words and accurate placement of the syncopated rhythms. Try to blend the voices so that they sound as one, and aim for a softer, crooning vocal tone, like The Ink Spots or The Andrews Sisters.

The work was commissioned by Michael Paine, and nos. 4 and 5 of the set were premiered by Mr. Paine at the piano with Amanda Hamley, Soprano, Prudence Raper, Contralto, John English, Tenor, and Kevin O'Donnell, Baritone, in St. Anne's Church, London, September 6, 1998, in their World Premiere. The live recording of this premiere has been lost. The audio clip is the opening of the first piece, Vivamus, Mea Lesbia in the Composer's Virtual Instruments Demo. What is Wisdom?In Proverbs 8:5-11 she says,Learn prudence, acquire intelligence, …take my instruction instead of silver,and knowledge rather than choice gold,for Wisdom is better than jewels. This suite of three songs is appropriate for use in a Christian or Jewish religious service or a secular concert. It includes a short audience participation possibility at the end of the last song. All are written for flute, piano, ethnic drum, SATB plus a high soprano part that can be a soloist. The drum part is written out, but could be improvised. The first song, Hear My Call, is short (1:49) and could be used as a call to worship in a religious service. The second song, God Created Me, (4:36) is an anthem of praise using the wonderful words of the creation of Wisdom in Proverbs 8:22-36 with a descant of the creation story in the book of Ben Sira 24:3, found in the Apocrypha. The tenors and basses sing the comparison of Wisdom with the trees of Israel, also found in Ben Sira, all in praise of Wisdom. The third song, Choose Life, (1:16) includes a chant that can be sung by the congregation or audience along with the choir. This could be used as the final hymn in a religious service. All three songs can be used separately or together. At the end of the score you will find a copy of the congregational chant which can be copied and placed in an Order of Service or Program. Purchase includes the right to make eight photocopies. For additional copies please purchase another score from sheetmusicplus.com. The recording is electronically produced and therefore has choral oohs without words. All three songs are on the recording, and at the end there is a flute rendering of the chant.. This is not intended to stand alone, but to be sung, as directed, with the last part of the choir song, Choose Life.

We welcome you to our ‘Feast for Christmas’. In the first movement, Christmas Welcome, the scene is set: but the key to a successful Christmas dinner is forward planning and in the second movement the Christmas Pudding is prepared in November, on ‘Stir-up Sunday’. In the third movement, Christmas Eve, the early twentieth century poet Robert Bridges looks back, on a frosty evening, from his own time to the very distant past, and considers what Christmas means to him. Then in the fourth movement, our Christmas Feast is prepared, and the Christmas Grace (fifth movement) is not forgotten. It is of course impolite to sing during the actual Christmas Dinner itself, but towards the end of the meal the peace is rudely interrupted by the sixth movement, Christmas Crackers. The seventh movement, Christmas Spirit, reminds us, in seventeenth-century words, of how we should share our good fortune with those who have need of it, and in the last movement, Christmas Celebration, the audience is invited to join in, with the last verse of the well known ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ Some separate movements are also available: Christmas Recipe, Festival (Christmas) Grace, and Christmas Celebration. Ein altes Lied, bei dem ich bei aller Recherche nicht herausfinden konnte, woher es eigentlich kommt.Wenn ich an dieses Lied denke, fühle ich mich wieder als wäre ich elf oder zwölf Jahre alt. Es kommen Erinnerungen hoch, wie ich in der alten, engen Kirche unserer Gemeinde neben meinem Opa sitze und er und all die anderen älteren Männer dieses Lied voller Inbrunst und Freude am Sonntagmorgen schmettern. Es war eine herrliche Zeit, nie habe ich ein Kirchenlied fröhlicher gesungen gehört.Aus dieser Erinnerung und Nostalgie heraus entstand bei mir vor Jahren der Wunsch, einen Chorsatz zu diesem Lied zu schreiben. Die erste Strophe beginnt standesgemäß (Es ist Sonntag, ihr BRÜDER) mit Männergesang, der sich bis zu einer Vierstimmigkeit entwickelt. Die Frauen begleiten diesen. Ab der zweiten Strophe übernimmt der Sopran die Melodieführung und das Lied entwickelt sich inkl. zweier Tonartwechsel hin zu einem finalen Ehre sei Gott in der Höh!.
