SAATBB version of the great song by Gorni Kramer.STBB voices follow a simple arrangement: Soprano does the main melody and Tenor, Baritone and Bass do accompaniment: an easy bass line and two voices for the chords.Baritone and Bass often play upbeat in the first bars of most of the phrases (pretending to be guitars or trumpets) and turn to straight beat in the final measures.Tempo is fast, thus singing those upbeat at the right speed can be challenging: bear in mind slowing them down produces a global weakening of the entire song: I suggest Tenor2 and Baritone drink some coffee before singing...SAA voices, (Soprano, the lead, Alto and Contralto the other), come from a Pasquale Amico (thank You!) arrangement and make a very good melody harmonisation.To add movement to an otherwise great and funny but simple structure, I added few bars to the original work, starting from bar 79 (F mark); here, pay attention to sing in sync, since the section is very rhythmic.Some background information about the song: written in 1939 under the fascist regime, Kramer was accused of making fun of the fascist hierarch Achille Starace, who used to walk upright in a black shirt, arousing the hilarity of the population. The song thus had to face the censorship of the regime, given that the allusion appeared quite clear.Many years after the composition, Gorni Kramer declared that the piece was inspired not by Starace but by the maestro Pippo Barzizza, with whom, in 1939, Kramer had had an argument during a performance at the Kursaal in Viareggio.

The melody and lyrics were first published in 1910 in John Lomax's Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads, though the song has existed long before publication in the anonymous aural tradition of folk music. Since selling cattle was quite profitable, a crew of cowboys drove a herd, particularly from Texas, to railheads where they would be loaded into railcars and shipped cross-country to get the best price at market. Cowboys watched the cattle 24 hours a day, herding them in the proper direction in the daytime and watching them at night to prevent stampedes and deter theft. Around the campfire, cowboys sang of life on the trail with all the challenges, hardships, and dangers encountered along the way.E. C. The musical setting presents the opening lyrics in the children’s voices: The day is done, and the darkness falls from the wings of night. These phrases, or slight variations thereof, return as refrains throughout the song. The verses alternate between the men’s and women’s voices, with the children interjecting refrains or offering commentary in the background. Finally, the children interrupt the SATB dialogue with exclamations of a song! a song! a song! These lead to the climax of the song, given to the children’s chorus, singing And the night shall be filled with music. All voices then join together in celebration: Our song shall fill the night. It is one of the masterpieces of all time that I think deserved an adaptation for choir. His melody, full of sweetness and beauty, unfolds like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon. Camille Saint-Saëns said of it: Just as Mozart's is the only Ave verum Corpus, this is the only Pie Jesu. Fauré wrote about his Requiem: It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death . But it is how I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration to a higher happiness, rather than a painful experience.

It was said to be sung by the angels when you got to Heaven, and sa-sa-la-do is the solfege of the angels' song. The turtle dove is Noah's dove, and a 'do-do' is an African lullaby. This song was first recorded by gospel singer, Bessie Jones. She learned it from her grandfather, Jet Sampson, an ex-slave who was born in Africa and died in 1941 at the age of 105. Numerous other pop and folk singers have performed this song, including the Grateful Dead, Andrew Calhoun & Fred Campeau, Lee and Sarah Atkinson, and Caroline Aiken. Here, it is presented for 4-part a cappella choir.

The piece is composed in three sections, representative of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The close harmonies create the mournful emotional tension. Word painting and story telling is apparent throughout, especially in passages such as resúrget, in which a solo soprano soars above the choir representing the ascension to heaven, and the repeated Lacrimósa, paints an image of tears falling down ones face. A sense of urgency begins to build in the Judicándus section, and the melodic and harmonic structure changes. As the harmonies build and tempo increases you can feel the fear of the unknown future which lies ahead. Begging and pleading for forgiveness ensues as the voices call out, párce Déus, to be seated at the Father’s side. As the tension builds and harmonies become more complex the piece escalates to its climax and comes to an abrupt end. After a slight pause, the calm settles in. Judgement has been passed and the tenors transition us to the PÃe Jésu section with Dóna éis réquiem, surrounded by the return of the melodic motif meant to appear as the angels delivering the assurances of God’s mercifulness. The final phrase dóna éis réquiem, is sung with cross voicing found in the tenor and bass section representing the ascension to heaven as the harmonies settle into their final resting place.
