This setting of the well known Christmas poem 'I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day' restores some of the language that is commonly left out of most hymnals. This setting restores some of the anguish associated with the Civil War and allows for a tension not often associated with this text. A powerful setting. The title of the original Longfellow poem is 'Christmas Bells.' Charles Appleton Longfellow was the eldest son of the famous poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Fannie Elizabeth Appleton, who lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In March of 1863, with the Civil War then in its third year, nineteen year old Charley ran away to Washington to join the Union Army. He presented himself for enlistment to the commander of Battery A of the 1st Massachusetts Artillery, who knew the boy. The officer contacted Henry who reluctantly gave his permission for the boy to enlist. Charley proved himself such an exceptional soldier that he was soon offered a commission as a Second Lieutenant of Artillery. He first saw action at the Battle of Chancellorsville. In June he was briefly invalided home following a bout of typhoid fever and malaria, rejoining his unit in August. Then in November, during the Battle of New Hope Church, Charley was shot through the left shoulder, the bullet just grazing his spine. He narrowly avoided being paralyzed. Henry received word of Charley’s wounding on December 1, and he and a younger son went immediately to Washington, where Charley was in hospital, and brought him home to Cambridge. It was while nursing his son in his slow recovery that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow composed this poem during Christmas, 1863. -Ronald PereraDuration: 4:40.

Composer’s Note - To Your ShoreMy cultural heritage is mixed: I was born of a Caucasian Australian father of Welsh descent and a Chinese mother from Penang who settled in Australia after some years in Brunei. Thus I find myself frequently pondering the immigrant experience. I wrote the text of T​o Your Shore​ ​to act as kind of twin soliloquies: the first from a person on a boat catching first sight of land, the second from another person standing on the shore ready to welcome the ship they spy on the horizon. I tried to evoke a mixture of trepidation and hope you might feel whilst on your way to a new life in a place where you don’t yet speak the language, where society’s customs and traditions are different, where the climate and the environment feel so very foreign to you, but where you might have a chance at building a happier life.-- Sally Whitwell

If you have ever wanted to sing the famous Slava (Glory) by the composer Rimsky-Korsakov, here is your chance to enjoy the main theme without all the difficulty of the full score. That work takes the Mormon Tabernacle Choir or a large College choir. This arrangement has enough of both anthems to satisfy your classic tastes. The big chords and fanfares are ideal for choirs to sing - emulating the sound of that classic synth brass riff. There are some nice little echoes in the second verse - make use of the dynamics to really sell these. The a capella chorus towards the end is a great chance to show off what your choir can do, and the (optional) high lines for the 1st sopranos and tenors at the end should knock your audience's socks off! The purpose of this series of sight-singing exercise books is to give choir directors supplemental materials with which to strengthen the reading skills of singers.These exercises may be used in a variety of ways, starting with unison choir, then two part, then switching parts, etc… to maximize the exercises’ content. No texts are provided, so that the singers may use neutral syllables to focus on tone, or solfege, numbers, or rhythm syllables, depending on the system the teacher uses.This volume contains 20 exercises, using common rhythmic patterns in 6/8, 6/4, and 9/8, with some exercises in 12/8, and then 5/8 and 5/4.
