Then came the horror of October 7th in Israel and I was compelled to compose THE SONG OF ESTHER as a statement against antisemitism. When Xerxes (bass) was king of Persia, called Ahasu-e'rus ( not poetic) I wrote this religious operetta,which is dead serious about how Esther ( soprano) is taken as a queen and she risks her life to save her people. Evil, personified by Haman (tenor,) plans a pogram of all Persian Jews, because Mordechai , Esther's uncle ( no solo)will not bow before him. The 10 chapters of the Book of Esther come alive in this piece, which I hope will be sung in synagaogues along with the reading of Esther at Purim.

Brock Commission for the 2003 American Choral Directors Association National Convention, Memorial is based on subject material which reflects the horrific events of September 11, 2001 in New York City. Though presented as one continuous movement, the composition follows a program that comprises four sub-sections: September Morning, The Attack, Prayers, and Petitions. The first two sections reflect the actual chain of events leading up to and including the attacks upon the World Trade Center Towers. The music of destruction, however, is kept to a minimum in favor of musical emphasis upon a possible spiritual response to these events. Healing, cleansing and hope are the main themes of the work, whose primary text of the final section is one verse from Psalm 80, O God, shine your light on us, and we shall be saved. Although composed with the events of 9/11 in mind, nowhere does the text specifically mention 9/11 or the specific events of the day.

The Gift to Sing is a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) published in 1917. The central theme of the text is one of optimism and resilience, using the power of song – meaning, more broadly, art or any kind of artful, heightened expression – to overcome adversity. Although the poem can be interpreted broadly to pertain to any kind of struggle, it is likely that Johnson, as a civil-rights activist was alluding more specifically to the oppression African-Americans in the United States, a struggle that continues to this day, in 2020. I composed this setting in September of 2020, right after the Black Lives Matter protests that took place that summer, so current events played a role in this interpretation on my part as well. If one reads the poem as pertaining the continued struggle of African Americans, some passages may come across as ambiguous. For instance, I brood not over the broken past should not be taken as suggesting that the horrors of the past should be forgotten, but as an injunction that the memory of these horrors should not discourage us or diminish our resolve to work toward overcoming the injustices. The musical inspiration for the opening of the piece comes from the song Lonesome Valley, which starts with a pentatonic melodic gesture. The pentatonic scale is often used in African American Spirituals, Christian hymns, and folksongs (e.g., Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Amazing Grace, How Can I Keep from Singing?, Red River Valley, Oh Shenandoah). The more rhythmic parts take inspiration from the African-American spiritual tradition, as found for instance in the choral music of Moses Hogan (1957-2003). Meanwhile, the tenor solo at the end, is intended to be very loud, bright, and without the pronounced vibrato one would find in a Western operatic style. This kind of bright and intense vocal sound is not unfamiliar to most listeners, who may have encountered it in places as varied as Sacred Harp singing, the opening of the Lion King soundtrack, or the Muslim call to prayer.

It was the group’s second No. 1 single (their first was If You Leave Me Now) and their first top 50 hit since Tell No Lover in 1978. It was featured in Grey's Anatomy in 2007 and is on Grey's Anatomy Soundtrack album 3 (released September 11). About four years later, a version of the song has been recorded by Grey's Anatomy actress Sara Ramirez and was first presented in the 2011 episode Song Beneath the Song. The track was later covered by LeAnn Rimes for her Remnants album and by Dolly Parton for the charity tribute album Cover Stories. This arrangement for SATB choir and piano is based on Brandie Carliles recording and features some fine tenor solos as well as rich tutti harmonies which all work fine for young and/or intermediate singers. In 2009 when Sanctuary Choir of South Main Baptist Church in Houston where I served as Music Minister was scheduled to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros baseball game, I carefully examined the several arrangements in our library and other resources. Finding nothing which met the simple, straight-forward criteria I was searching for, we created this simple arrangement. Since its addition to the music library it has proven very useful on numerous occasions for a variety of groups. About the National Anthem:The lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner were written on September 14, 1814 from a British ship in the Baltimore Harbor where attorney Francis Scott Key had waited anxiously through the night as the twenty-five hour bombing of Ft. McHenry progressed. He had been sent to negotiate the release of an American civilian and then was held on board the ship. At the dawn’s early light when the flag could still be seen indicating the British had not taken the fort, he jotted down this poem which on March 3, 1931 finally became the National Anthem of the United States. Interestingly, it was Robert Ripley who in November of 1929 drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon, Ripley’s Believe It or Not stating Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem. With the encouragement of John Philip Sousa, President Herbert Hoover signed into law the adoption of The Star-Spangled Banner to rectify this situation. According to the Smithsonian, the melody, written by John Stafford Smith, was originally titled Anacreon in Heaven. Anacreon was an ancient Greek poet known for his love of wine and love. The song had become the constitutional song of a London gentlemen’s club called the Anacreontic Society. Could this explain the wide range of the melody? Two Views of Scott Joplin is an exploration of a personal and artistic crisis that Scott Joplin, the King of Ragtime, went through between 1904 and 1906. This crisis was precipitated by the untimely death of Freddie Alexander in September 1904, to whom Joplin had been married only ten weeks. Knowledge of this marriage was lost to history for almost a century until the Joplin scholar Edward A. Berlin discovered the newspaper obituary, which is quoted in the bass solo in Part II, The Obituary of Freddie Alexander. Apparently, Scott Joplin, already inspired by the progressive ideals of Booker T. Washington, saw a path to social and artistic betterment through his love of Freddie, a daughter of a refined family. During this period, Joplin used the title rag less often in his piano-solo works, and nurtured an interest in opera (he had long been active in vaudeville as well as ragtime piano). He seems to have lost his sense of direction in 1905 and 1906, until led by his publisher John Stark to move to New York City in 1907. Once there, apparently growing out of his grief, Joplin studied with an Italian opera singer and composer, composed his folk opera Treemonisha, and composed Wall Street Rag and his other late masterpieces for piano. Joplin died in April 1917 following two years of debilitating illness. Joplin left almost no personal writings, such as letters or diaries. To create an impression of autobiography, Two Views of Scott Joplin consists mostly of words and music written by Scott Joplin, and piano music composed by two close associates, the composer-pianists Louis Chauvin and Scott Hayden. These words come from Treemonisha, from Joplin’s little-remembered vaudeville and parlor songs, and also from text in his sheet-music---copyright notices, publishers’ addresses, titles and subtitles of rags, performance directions. In most cases, selected lyrics are extracted from songs and paired with piano-solo themes. These ingredients are combined in creative ways to express the biographical narrative. Instrumental themes are re-cast as necessary to express their newly-attached lyrics. But in no place can any of the music in Two Views of Scott Joplin be considered an arrangement of a given, intact composition, nor a medley of tunes, nor a theatrical revue. The character development and dialogue found in Scott Joplin’s Struggle with Destiny (Part II, No. 3) is my own biographical interpretation of Joplin, based on known evidence and on his music.The score contains extensive Performance Notes for performing this 16-minute work as a choral work or as a short opera scene.

Based on the events of 9/11 and including audio clips from where the airport officials indicated the carnage on board one of the planes that struck the former World Trade Centers 1 and 2 on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001. I was 12 and a half years old at the time, and my brother was 10 and a half. Before he woke up, he had nightmares about flames. That was really creepy. The song centers on the trauma that the elementary school students across the street from the destruction in Manhattan faced as they witnessed the planes strike the towers, and everything that ensued. It uses the opening melody of Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto, repeated and with the addition of drums, a wild bass solo, and some electric guitar riffs. It's a little painful even for me to listen to. I listened to it a lot this evening before posting it for sale.Stephen Sullivan- 02/20/2024Southeast Indiana *.
