Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.774721). As I Out Rode This Enderes Night is a companion carol to the well-known and very popular Lully, Lullay, also known as the Coventry Carol. Both carols were part of the Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The pageant was a mystery play regularly performed in the English city of Coventry from the early 15th Century until around the middle of the 16th Century. The Pageant also included a third carol beginning with the line Down from Heaven, from Heaven so High.The mystery plays of medieval Europe were traditionally created and performed by craft guilds based in the larger cities. These mystery plays focused on the representation of stories from the Bible, told in the local vernacular rather than in Latin. They told of subjects such as the Creation, the Nativity, the Passion and the Last Judgment.The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors depicted the Christmas story, covering events from the Annunciation through to the Massacre of the Innocents. Lully, Lullay refers to the latter event in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two, in Bethlehem, to be killed. As I Out Rode and Down from Heaven referred to the angel’s announcement, to shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem, concerning the birth of the Christ child and the subsequent visit by the shepherds to the manger, where they found the baby with Mary and Joseph.Today, the two shepherds’ songs are often combined into a single carol with the title As I Out Rode This Enderes Night or The Coventry Shepherds Carol.This new SATB-with-descant arrangement (the original was scored for treble, tenor and bass) incorporates an additional three verses, the lyrics of which are an adaptation of the dialogue from the pageant that came between the two songs of the shepherds.

Part of the Christmas Story is the shepherds tending their flocks by night. This interesting composition creates the impression that the tenors and basses are the shepherds and the sopranos and altos are the angels as it describes the shepherds' journey to find the Christ Child. Full of meaning and beautiful chording, it can easily be performed as a tenor/bass duet using soloists, with other tenors and basses joining in on the tutti sections. The song has several key changes and is mostly in a minor key, except for one section when the angels sing. It can be a real show piece for your tenors and basses, and lends itself to the dramatic acting out of the scenarios. Performance time is @ 5-6 minutes.

It all began with the idea one morning that the other tune for Nahum Tate's carol While shepherds watched is, of course, the Yorkshire ditty On Ilkley moor bar t'hat. Well, as the afternoon progressed, other tunes got added, resulting in a curious potpourri for choir and piano. The choir gets to sing On Ilkla Moor, the Este psalter tune known to all, and also Auld Lang Syne. The second voice, in its madrigalian way, gets a sly English cadence!. Meanwhile, the piano gets some sly references to Sing a song of sixpence and Scotland the brave. I sang it in G on this mp3, to fit my multitrack range, but versions are available on sheetmusicplus in G (ATBB), C (SATB) (fairly high for the sopranos) and Bflat (SATB) (fairly low for the basses) It can also be seen as a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRXrzrSY-Vw === While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. Written for the 2008 Christmas service and performed in the Ballroom of Buckingham Palace, Kings and Shepherds is a short traditional setting of Christmas Poem by George Mackey Brown, a poet who lived near to Maxwell Davies on the Orkney Islands. A wonderful addition to the carol repertoire and ideal for amateur choirs looking to programme new pieces.

Tate was an Anglo-Irish poet, hymn writer and lyricist, who became Poet Laureate in 1692. He’s best known for The History of King Lear, his 1681 adaptation of Shakespeare's play. He also wrote the libretto for Henry Purcell's timeless opera, Dido and Aeneas. The traditional melody of While Shepherds Watched is well-known, but this new setting brings in a wealth of new musical material. This is a tuneful work and is sure to be enjoyed by your singers and audiences alike. It is in 2/2 time throughout but journeys through several contrasting keys. It’s also available for SSA and SAT choirs with keyboard accompaniment.  There’s an a cappella section in the middle and more suited to experienced singers. The piano part is not difficult and should be within the reach of any competent pianist.
