I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

The text is based on Psalm 24 and is equally suitable for use during the Advent season or on Palm Sunday when nearly all children's choirs participate in the worship service. Further, it is written so that all ages of choirs could participate. The hymn tune is punctuated by the powerful dialogue from the Psalm: 'Who is the King of Glory' The Lord of hosts, He is the King of Glory!' This ties very well the Psalm ideas to Weissel's paraphrase, and then the closing stanza concludes with a personal response EUR to open the portals of one's heart. Another feature of the anthem s that the entire congregation can join in the singing at the appropriate places by either singing directly from the hymnal or by printing the words in a bulletin (permission is granted). In chapter two of Paul's letter to the Philippians, Paul begins speaking to his readers about encouragement, comfort from love, participation in the Spirit, and godly affection and sympathy for one another. He says, we are to count others as more important than ourselves. He pleads, Complete my joy by doing these things. From this point, Paul breaks immediately into this other known 1st century Hymn to Christ (Verses 5-11), which I have called, The Great Humility of Christ. The hymn text is a beautiful exposition of the Gospel; Christ in the form of God, did not hold onto (grasp) His equality with God, but humbled Himself and took on the human form of a servant (slave) and poured Himself out for all of mankind. The anthem is composed for SATB (a cappella) choir in two stanzas, with a bridge section and a coda. The piece is scored in D minor, but weaves between D minor and G Major (representing the dual natures of Christ-fully God and fully man). After the first stanza, regarding Christ’s taking on human flesh, the unthinkable happens; Christ humbles Himself in holy obedience to be put to death, even a humiliating and repugnant death on a cross. Here in the anthem we find the musical bridge between the two stanzas with the sopranos holding onto a single note (high D) followed by a cascade of dissonant suspensions, one voice handing off to the other, finally resolving in a descending scale.The second stanza declares God’s having exalted Christ as a consequence of His sacrifice, giving Him a name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. The final coda (in G Major) trumpets the pronouncement that; Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father.

Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1370). 8.27 x 11.7 inches.In 2017, I was commissioned by the male voice choir Svanholm Singers to write a work for inclusion in a concert marking 70 years since the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Choosing a text was difficult. I came across upon a poem by Maya Angelou, but it struck me as being too powerful and emotional for the music I was writing to carry it; everything I composed sounded banal next to Angelou's words. I soon realized that I could use silence to enhance the text, rather than heaping layers and layers of music upon it. Silence is both terrifying and serious - in a sense, it is the only adequate counterpoint to the poetry. So, I decided to build the piece on silence. Though the beginning of the piece is the opposite of silence - a scream of desperation -, I followed that outburst by cutting the poem's stanzas into single words, repeated in a different order each time, almost in the manner of a mantra. Finally, they end up in the right order and suddenly the words take on their rightful meaning. I hope, in this way, the music is equally powerful as the words. Son to Mother has been well-received and has gone on to become one of the most widely performed pieces I have written. It has been performed at various festivals and in various countries, including Taiwan, France and China - where it only just made it past the government censors. - Henrik DahlgrenThis version is an adaptation for mixed choir of the original male choir version. Henrik Dahlgren is a Swedish composer, born 1991. He has been studying at the Academy Of Music in Malmo with Prof. Rolf Martinsson and the Royal College Of Music in London with Dr. Haris Kittos. Henrik started his musical career as a drummer and has ever since worked in a very wide range of different genres and styles, both as a performer and as a composer.

Ken Litton (ASCAP)As an SBC music missionary active in Brazil I quickly discovered the hymns missionaries had taken with them as the work gained impetus from the 1890s when the Bagbys arrived to build on the foundation laid by early pioneers like Solomon Ginsburg. I found myself leading those hymns from the nearly 100 year old Cantor Cristão (Christian Singer) in the strongly attended evening services at the Igreja Batista Rio Doce (Sweet River Baptist Church) in Recife, with people literally leaning in through the windows from outside to sing along. Just a normal p.m. attendance or... curiosity about the missionary leading? No, certainly it was the message of the gospel in these great hymns and in the Brazilians’ creative work as well. I mainly remember holding that small print hymnal in one hand and leading with the other (shaking badly) and singing in Portuguese!From that kind of congregational participation I vividly remember the hymn Blessed be the Fountain by Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) and Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914) with it’s energetic dotted eighth and sixteenth rhythm figures and text of confession based on Zechariah 13:1. That text was very important in the lives of disciples in Brazil and in my own heart. Here I have used only the verses of the text and tune, simply smoothing out the rhythm and adjusting the lyric to more modern usage (yet preserving the devotional pronouns Thee, Thy and Thine).The tune BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN is altered in rhythm, tempo and one descending interval from the original. The arrangement is by me, having built the intro, interlude and key change as well as the ending from the material that constituted the refrain in the origina. As a bridge and additional textual/musical impulse into the key change and final verse I’ve interpolated the refrain from the well-known gospel hymn Whiter than Snow (FISCHER) by James Nicholson and William G. Fischer.The voices include a wide variety of unison, two-part and four-part passages that are well within the capability of the average church choir. The accompaniment difficulty level is about as minimal as it can be I hope, while still reflecting support for the voices, a measure of variety as well as some real independence.I certainly think choirs of some ability and their dedicated accompanists will enjoyWhiter Than the Snow as much as I have in developing it.

This year's Christmas publication choice fell on a song very dear to me: Hark! The herald angels sing. The text, inspired by Luke’s Gospel (2:14), appears for the first time in a collection of Christmas carols called Hymns and Sacred Poems in 1739, jointly written by Charles Wesley (1707-1788 ) and George Whitefield (1714-1770), two of the founding members of the Methodist movement.The version we know today is the one adapted by William H. Cummings (1831-1915) from the section Vaterland, in deinen Gauen of the Festgesang zum Gutenbergfest, WoO 9, by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847). The story, however, is more complex and articulated than that.The original version of the text, written by Wesley, bearing the title Hymn for Christmas-Day, had received only slow and solemn music for its verses, music now almost completely discarded. Also, his original opening lines were Hark! How all the welkin rings / Glory to the King of Kings .The version that has been passed to us is the result of alterations made by different hands, especially those of Whitefield, who changed the initial couplet into the one we know today.In 1840-one hundred years after the publication of Hymns and sacred Poems-Mendelssohn composed a cantata commemorating Johann Gutenberg’s invention of movable-type printing. The English musician William H. Cummings finally adapted Mendelssohn’s music around 1855 in order to fit the music to the verses and give it its present look.In this edition we propose the version that every listener expects to hear when reading the title on the programme and, immediately after, one of the few original versions that have reached us in their entirety, that is the one set to music by Samuel Arnold (1740-1802) and available today in The British Minstrel, and Musical and Literary Miscellany, vol. 3, published in 1843.The proposed instrumentations are those of the classical string quartet and the cello quartet. Both variants are very simple to perform and are certainly suitable for small string ensembles formed in musical schools. In the cello quartet version, the only relatively complex part is that of the first cello, which should be left to the teacher or to a student able to play up to the 7th position without excessive troubles.I hope this music can bring you the serenity that made me prepare it.

It is technically a kontakion, (a hymn sung in commemoration of a feast day, whether referring to Christ, the Virgin Mary, or to a saint). Nye Ãmamï inïya pómoshchi is intended to be sung for the feast day commemorating an icon of the Virgin entitled “The joy of all who sorrow,†(Ð’Ñех ÑкорбÑщих РадоÑÑ‚ÑŒ|Vsekh skorbyashchikh Radost') observed on October 24 in the Orthodox Church calendar. The author of the text is unknown. In contemporary church practice, this work is sometimes sung during the communion of the clergy. Although other pieces in Opus 25 are based on traditional church chants, Nye Ãmamï inïya pómoshchi contains original music that is not based on any preexisting chant. The present edition is based on the first edition published in Moscow by Pyotr Ivanovich Jurgenson. The keyboard reduction has been modified from the Jurgenson edition. Russian Orthodox performance practice forbids the use of musical instruments to accompany church singing. Organ accompaniment, if used, should be unobtrusive. The Jurgenson edition includes Chesnokov's use of a quarter note without metronome marking. This indicates that the pulse is in a moderato tempo in quarter notes. A tempo of approximately 69 to the quarter note is suggested. The Jurgenson edition has inconsistent dynamic markings in various parts and text appears only below the soprano and tenor parts. For clarity and convenience, these indications have been included in each staff in the present edition. This scholarly performance edition includes notes concerning the history of Chesnokov and this piece, performance notes, the editorial method of the English singing version, and a pronunciation guide for the Slavonic transliteration.

This playful arrangement really swings! The upper four voices often feature tight harmonies with closed voicings, offering a challenge to singers, while remaining fun to listen to. The B section transitions to a jazz waltz and then back into swing for the final A and rubato coda to finish. It is possible to sing this with only 5 voices as the backgrounds are either doubled in the solo or can be woven into the solo line. The bass part is equal parts walking and homorhythmic. All vocal percussion is a written part of the bass line and singable by even a novice to vocal percussion. The short piano introduction is meant to represent the approach of the Kings from a long distance. Measures 1 through 13 should be played as softly as possible, gradually increasing in volume from there until the voices begin. The text is a conversation between the Three Kings and the Star. The choice was made not to employ the use of soloists as each individual King and Star, but instead to keep the piece completely ensemble oriented. As a result, the composition relies on the ensemble to portray multiple unique voices.  Sections are marked accordingly and every effort should be made by singers and conductor to vary each respectively. .
