English.The Seasons was commissioned by the South Bend Chamber Singers, Nancy Menk, conductor, and first performed on March 3, 2013 by the South Bend Chamber Singers with the Euclid Quartet in a concert devoted to music about the weather. The texts for this work were selected by the composer, and they represent three different time periods, the 17th, 19th and early 20th centuries, to show that writers have long been fascinated by the seasons and by the distinct weather conditions that each season brings. Although certain types of weather, such as wind or rain, may occur in any of the seasons, the descriptions of weather in these four poems present specific weather conditions which commonly occur in each of the four seasons: a still, hot, sultry day interrupted by the movement of a light breeze from the hills (summer); the cooling morning mists and light frost which signal the coming of winter (autumn); the bitter iciness of fierce winds and frozen air-in this poem, further compared with man's ingratitude (winter); the warm rains and southerly winds that melt the ice and bring about new life (spring). Throughout this piece various musical devices are employed to underscore or even interpret the words. These devices include text painting, contrapuntal structures (double canon and fugue), and dramatically shifting harmonic colors as each season unfolds. The contrasting performing forces of mixed choir and string quartet are particularly well-suited for presenting, very colorfully, the various musical depictions of the weather conditions and characteristics of each of the seasons. -Frank FerkoDuration: 2:40.

The two percussion parts take turns accompanying the choir and painting contrasts with their own melodies and an extended instrumental interlude. Spring is represented by the marimba, the vibraphone and the crotales, that create a tonal world based on the Chinese philosophy of the Five Elements: Spring (wood), Summer (fire), Late Summer (earth), Autumn (metal), and Winter (water). These phases generate or give birth to one another in one order, while they control or undo each other in the reverse order. Nordisk var was commissioned by the Vocal Art Ensemble of Sweden, conducted by Jan Yngwe, and the Rhythm Art Duo - Daniel Berg and Fredrik Duvling, with financial support from Korcentrum Syd (Southern Choral Centre), Lund University. The piece is dedicated to these two ensembles that also performed it at its world premiere on May 19, 2015 at the venue Artisten in Gothenburg. - Daniel Fjellstrom Vocal score. We Have A Friend, Church Anthem for Soloists, SATB and Piano composed in 2017. Inspiration Each year Fall and Winter bring an end to the growing season ushering in a dormant period within the seasonal cycle. Spring and Summer follow with new life and a time when we can again enjoy nature at its fullest. Our own lives mirror similar cycles; sometimes we are faced with events bringing us sadness and despair and other times peace and joy. In the end Jesus and God's great love are our Spring and Summer. This piece attempts to portray this contrast, comparing the seasons to our own lives and reminding us that in the end We Have A Friend who helps us. The Music The piece begins with soloists portraying the seasons of the year and how they relate to our lives. A transition then occurs where we're reminded that when we are down and out, and we need a helping hand, we have a friend in the Lord Jesus.

The sound sample here was the first performance, performed by a singing group in our college back in 1976. The author of the words is singing with the tenors and I am playing the guitar part. A polka is a vivacious couple dance of Bohemian origin in duple time; was a basic pattern of hop-step-close-step; a lively Bohemian dance tune in 2/4 time. The polka was originally a Czech peasant dance, developed in Eastern Bohemia (now part of Czechoslovakia).Growing up in Pennsylvania, nd playing for various local community bands, VFW bands ,Lion's Band , etc we played the Pa Polka for many functions, churches, Seniors, Cake Walks, 4th of July programs, summer and spring concerts, marching bands, parades, and many more events.The Pennsylvania Polka is such a fun, happy song, in a march tempo beat. The arrangement was prepared for the Great Falls College Community Choir’s (GFC3’s) 2023 “Spring in Montana†concert, conducted by Cynthia Stevens, Department Chair of Fine Arts and Education at Great Falls College Montana State University (GFC MSU). It was also performed by the GFC3 at the Great Falls Municipal Band's 2023 Summer Patriotic Celebration, by invitation of the band’s director, Dusty Molyneaux, District Music and Arts Supervisor, Great Falls Public Schools. It was so well received that an invitation was extended to perform it at the Montana State Capitol, similarly to when the original song was composed in 1910!
