Amavolovolo is a traditional Zulu dowry song. In past times it told the story of people afraid to go to Kwamashu because there were so many guns there, but today it’s sung joyously at weddings and other ceremonies.

Their texture is for the most part homophonic, and they were to be sung without accompaniment. Songs from the Book Of Revelation is a powerful new cantata (SATB) and piano accompaniment consisting of 14 original songs from the book of Revelation that may be performed on any occasion throughout the year. I wrote this work during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. I was inspired to praise God and compose new music using text from the book of Revelation. Next to each song title, I have provided the bible verses for easy access. I arranged the songs in chronological order, but may be sung in any order. Most of the songs are easy to medium in difficulty level, including the piano accompaniment. One of the songs titled Amen! Amen! (Revelation 7:12) is sung and played in whole tone scale and is challenging to perform. There is a couple of short solos, and acapella sections throughout the cantata. Check out the MIDI sample and video of this entire cantata in my YouTube channel with the link provided. All lyrics are shown on the screen as the music is playing. Enjoy performing this cantata and to God be the glory! Performance time is about 38 minutes (with repeats).

Later, the music increases its harmonic tension on the word “relentless.†The closing phrase is sung on a hum, as if to represent a memory, an echo, or perhaps a shadow in the window which reminds us of something that has passed. Steal Away interprets the traditional spiritual, "Steal Away to Jesus," as a song of alternating sorrow and strength. The refrains are presented quietly and mournfully: "Steal away to Jesus. I ain't got long to stay here." In contrast, the verses are sung with conviction: "My Lord calls me, calls me by the thunder." Similarly, the accompaniment varies from florid arpeggiations (for the refrains) to rhythmic chordal entrances (for the verses).
Of special interest is the use of scale patterns. In the opening refrain, and on every occurrence of the words "steal away," the scales descend, marked as falling tears, or stealing away. At the conclusion of the song, the scales rise, as the soul ascending to heaven. "My Lord calls me, calls me home." Duration: 3:40.

On the Lake written for advanced SSAA divisi and harp. Fannie Isabelle Sherrick was an American poet who wrote songs and poems throughout the 1860's that captured hearts and minds. I Can Not Say the Sad Good-Bye was one of her notable songs published in 1873. She was both influenced and encouraged by Ella Wheeler Wilcox who she attributed her success to. Her most popular poetry volume entitled Love or Fame and Other Poems was published in 1880 by W.S Bryan of St Louis and she continued writing for many years. ON THE LAKE There's a beautiful lake where the sun lies low, And the skies are warm with their summer glow; And a beautiful picture there I see Where the winds are warm and the waves are free, And the waves lie still in the sun As the flowers at night, when the day is done. You may sing of your silvery seas by night When the moon looks down with a dreamy light; And the stars shine out in the skies above Like the warm sweet gaze of the eyes of love; But the glow on the lake to-day Is a glory that never will fade away.
