Begun after the untimely death in 1833 of his beloved friend Arthur Henry Hallam, In Memoriam is an intense expression of the poet's grief and search for hope in the face of profound loss. The seventh canto is a description of Hallam's house and the longing of the poet for the companionship from which he once drew such joy. For Tennyson, Hallam's absence now casts a dreary pallor over the surrounding scenery that even the rising sun fails to dispel. Vocal score. Approx. duration: 3-4 minutes.

Love is and was my Lord and King is a delightful miniature in neo-baroque style. It is relatively straightforward as long as the singers can keep up with the modulations. Crossing the bar is quiet and meditative, again relatively straightforward although it requires (ideally) basses able to sing down to a low D-flat. Of old sat Freedom on the heights is by far the most demanding of the three but also the most exhilarating if performed well, with a piano part that is cheerfully out of sync with the choir for much of the time.

Although it was not his last poem, he requested that Crossing the Bar appear as the final poem in all collections of his work. This poem describes a person not only at peace, but also perhaps awaiting the time of eternal rest and peace. The journey begins at sunset in a minor mode and finishes in the relative major after having crossed the bar. Both the first C minor chord and the final E-flat major chord have an added F-natural meant to represent the initial call which has guided the protagonist’s journey toward seeing his pilot face to face.

As my first complete venture into the realm of choral writing, Break, Break, Break portrays the text of Alfred Tennyson’s beautiful poem in an eight-part vocal setting. As the individual from the text is looking upon the ocean, I felt the words drawn by him would come in waves, and painted them in that fashion. As the piece progresses, we learn more about what is ailing this grieving individual, which I built with an overall rising intensity between voices. My hope is that this piece will leave the listener with a sense of gratefulness for what they have, since all of that can change in an instant.
