Bambino dalle stelle (Child of the Stars )is a choral arrangement based on the traditional Italian Christmas carol Tu scendi dalla stelle (From Starry Skies Descending).Tu scendi dalla stelle is amongst the oldest of Christmas songs in Italy. The original version was written in the mid-1700s in Naples by the Catholic Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti, Alfonso Maria de’ Ligouri. At that time it was called Quanno nascette Ninno and was written in the Neapolitan dialect in the style of a pastorale.The song was later re-written in Italian by Pope Pius IX and thereafter it became famous as a Christmas carol all over the world.Originally containing seven verses, today’s performances of the carol in Italy generally include only the first two verses. Notable recordings and performances of the carol include those by Sergio Franchi, Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti.This English language arrangement has been extended to four verses. Verse 1 and 2 are adaptations of the first two verses of the original; the third verse tells of the adoration of the shepherds and the wise men; and the fourth is based on some ideas inspired by the remaining verses of the original version.Instrumental accompanimentAvailable separately is an instrumental accompaniment scored for string quintet and glockenspiel. Brahms composed Ein deutsches Requiem, nach Worten der heiligen Schrift, his longest composition, during the period, 1865-1868. For the libretto, he eschewed the Latin text of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass, using instead verses he chose from the German-language Luther Bible. Thus, it was A German Requiem. The Roman Church’s Requiem Mass begins with prayers for the dead; Brahms, on the other hand, chose to console the living and framed his first movement around the second of the Beatitudes, Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.  The first movement is, indeed, comforting, filled with warmth and beauty. This arrangement retains Brahms’ original choral parts and translates the orchestral accompaniment to the five quietly playing brass instruments. The audio sample was digitally created, so the choral part of the arrangement can be heard but without words. This arrangement was completed in 2017 and runs about 10 minutes, 32 seconds. The arrangement is tailored for high schools, and community choirs for SATB and Brass Quintet. The movement exists in its entirety, mirroring the original for SATB and Orchestra. While the brass parts remain in a comfortable range for high school players, the endurance factor will challenge the students since the brass replaces the full orchestra. Of course, if the choral work is already a part of you library, you may just perform the original with the newly arranged brass parts. The melody is attributed to Lutheran Hymnist, Johann Crüger and was used in three J.S. Bach chorales but the most common version we hear today was harmonized by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840. Martin Rinkart was a deacon in Eisleben Germany where he served during the Thirty Years’ War. The city of Eisleben and Rinkart’s own home became a sanctuary for political refugees during the war. The resulting overcrowding in the walled city resulted in a horrible plague which hit its peak in 1637. Rinkart was the only surviving pastor in the city and before the plague was over he would preside over 4000 funerals include that of his own wife. Despite this, it was during this time that he wrote Now thank we all our God. This new setting of Now Thank We All Our God draws on Rinkart’s fierce spirit of optimism and faith in a time of desolation and despair. To paint the picture of the circumstances in which Rinkart wrote the hymn, this setting opens with the text from Psalm 13: How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?The setting turns quickly, in an act of disruptive optimism and faith, to a lopsided dance of joy. In the end, the setting returns to the opening question of Psalm 13, How long? only to be answered by Rinkart’s declaration, Gifts of love today!

The timbres of the different instruments adds a whole new textural dimension to this already fascinating work by J.S. Bach. I considered the need to breathe for each of these wind instruments, which obviously wasn't an issue for the original version intended for organ. This piece would be appropriate for advanced high school students, college students, or professionals. It would do well in a chamber music concert, in a church, or between acts of a larger ensemble concert, perhaps in another location of the auditorium while a (quiet!) set change is taking place. It would also work well as prelude or lobby music. The duration is just over three minutes (or longer if you prefer to take it slower). Each measure is numbered individually for convenience during rehearsals. I hope you will enjoy performing this piece as much as I have enjoyed arranging it!
