This is a modern folk song based on the true story of John Hewett and Sarah Drew, who died in Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire, a week before they were due to be married, on 31st July 1718.It was written as a tribute to John and Sarah, on 31st July 2018: the 300th anniversary of their death.For the lyrics I have taken liberties with the story (I kept them alive!) and I have borrowed from the epitaph written by the poet Alexander Pope, who was staying in the village at the time and was very moved by the incident.For more information on the story please visit https://thames.me.uk/s01960.htmThere is NO MINIMUM ORDER quantity on this piece as I arrange all of my songs to be suitable for teaching by ear. I have taught this myself to my community choir and they've really enjoyed singing it - I hope you do too!

The first part is flowing, irregular, folk-like; the second a solemn but joyful hymn. This could be either a concert piece or used in a ceremony of remembrance. 2019 Give us grace and strength to forbear and to persevere. Give us courage and gaiety, and the quiet mind. Blind Jack was the nickname given to Yorkshireman Jack Metcalfe (1717-1810) who was blinded by smallpox at the age of six but went on to become a skilled violinist, stage-coach conductor and the first road-maker to emerge from the Industrial Revolution.

An acappella choral piece dedicated to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City. Scored for SSATB choir. A dramatic Latin text setting in F minor, composed in the tintinnabuli style made famous by Arvo Pärt. Pärt calls his vocal composition technique tintinnabuli, a Latin word meaning ‘the ringing of bells’. Pärt claims that the three notes of a triad ‘ring like bells’. In tintinnabuli, the tonic triad is always present somewhere within the piece; either the root, third, or fifth of the tonic triad will always be heard. This provides the unique ability to create striking dissonances that remain unified by the underlying tonality, and resolve satisfyingly back into the tonic. This is evident when listening to Epitaphium Innocentum; the way that one or more lines drift away stepwise from the tonal center while others remain on it is jarring in motion, but very pleasing upon resolution. We are the heroes -- we are the axis of the stars.

The peninsula at Gallipoli in Turkey is now marked with cemeteries; particularly striking are the graves of Australian and New Zealand infantry, which are marked with epitaphs provided by the families of the fallen. Five of these epitaphs have been included in the text for “Waves of Gallipoli,†along with lines from poet Leon Gellert, a Gallipoli veteran. In the music we can hear the undulating of the Aegean Sea lapping the coastline of Gallipoli, sad melismas complement the idea of “moaning;†following the epitaphs, a single voice sounds the bugle call, “The Last Post,†which is sounded at ANZAC (Australia and New Zealand Army Corp) Day dawn services each year, memorializing the soldiers who fell at Gallipoli.
