The piece opens with the tune altered to G mixolydian mode. As the word exploited appears, a sinister-sounding E flat enters the harmony. Open octaves between soprano and bass show the emptying, followed by a shift to E phrygian mode with the word slave. Several dissonances emerge as the narrative gets darker. The flute and clà rsach represent chaos or hell with an aleatoric interlude of extended techniques involving tongue rams, flutter tonguing, multiphonics, spoken syllables, and lever glissandi. The harp then joyfully proclaims the new tonality of G major in a fanfare to introduce the text of praise and exaltation. The original source tune returns harmonically restored to G major.

I wrote the arrangement and conducted the Seattle Opera for this performance and the performance was televised on national T.V. and is one of my fondest memories. This choral work is sure to add excitement to your concert and it was given splendid reviews when it was first performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It was later performed at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls just outside London where it received a rapturous reception from the large audience. The work is ideal for music festivals (for which it was originally written) or any important event which needs a celebratory piece for choir and orchestra. The piece celebrates the endless joy of life and light, as children play on the seashore. The choral parts are not difficult and parts of the soprano could also be sung by children’s chorus if necessary. The words of the soprano solo part have a reflective, maternal quality as she watches the children playing on the shore. Singers are sure to enjoy the catchy melodies, the expressive soprano solo and the dramatic middle section of this work. Parts of the piece use several irregular time signatures. Don’t let them put you off! They are good deal easier than they look and the score contains indicates how they break down into simple units of two and three beats.The choral score contains a piano reduction of the orchestral score. The full orchestral score and parts are available separately from SMP. The orchestration is standard and requires: 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons; 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion (4 players), violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, double bass. A high-quality audio file containing the orchestral accompaniment is also available.The words are by the distinguished and much-loved Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). He made significant contributions to literature and wrote a prodigious number of works including essays, philosophical treatises, journals, memoirs, short stories and letters. The text of this work is taken from two poems in the book entitled Gitanjali. The title is translated as Song Offerings and was largely responsible for Tagore winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. The book contains over one hundred poems, translated freely by the author into English from the original Bengali, published in 1910. The English version appeared in 1912 published by the Indian Society of London. The text has been adapted slightly for this choral setting.Colin Kirkpatrick has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester and Belwin Mills. His music has been performed and broadcast world-wide.

A fantastic offer price for the full score and all parts! ... Looking for something to add a sense of oriental exoticism to your amateur orchestral/choral concert? This may be what you're looking for! This charming little suite of six dances lasts about 15½ minutes. It consists of a Pavane, Bourée, Sarabande, Allemande, Basse Danse and Galliard, which vary widely in character. As a whole the suite provides some interesting challenges for both performers and listeners. Apart from conventional strings, flute and harp (which can be either pedal or lever) you will need:- One or maybe two Arabian ouds. The parts are playable also on a fretless acoustic guitar. (Needs to be fretless because of the quarter-tones in some of the Arabic modes used.)- A cimbalom (the part can be played on a piano also, with slight modification). You might get away with using a hammered dulcimer but you'd need to make a number of compromises.- A doumbek and a djembe. These beautiful drums are a must for Middle-Eastern or African music. They're fairly easy to find, though finding somebody who can play them properly may take a bit more doing!- Finger cymbals and a gong. These are regular western instruments.- A wind-chime. Anything that produces a nice shimmering spangle of sound will probably do!- A group of singers (SATB). Nothing particularly challenging but see below.The primary oud part, the strings and the singers need to have sufficiently good intonation to pitch quarter tones. These are the exception rather than the rule, but nevertheless play an important part in the character of the music. Apart from this, the music is relatively straightforward and probably playable by any reasonably competent amateur or high school orchestra.In the spring of 2020 I wrote a set of short music tracks for a charity of which I'm a trustee. In order to protect my intellectual property rights in the music, I decided to bring it together into an attractive if not intellectually challenging little suite, hence An Omani Dance Suite. Originally the dances were all in Arabic quarter-tone temperament, but obviously quarter-tones cannot be played easily (if at all) on the flute, harp and cimbalom. So I have made some adjustments but retained the Arabic temperament wherever reasonably possible. I had thought initially of using a santur instead of a cimbalom, but the santur lacks the range and the dynamic capability to be used with a string chamber orchestra. The cimbalom doesn't need to be a concert grand model; in fact it doesn't even need to have dampers.The Omani was something of an afterthought: a musician friend of mine had worked in Oman and commented on how authentically Omani the Basse Danse sounded. The New Testament likewise speaks of deliverance frombondage – bondage from sin, and healing of the breach between God and humanity. It isthrough the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus that this deliverance isaccomplished. In both cases, there is cause for great joy.Musically, movement from the more subdued preface (part 1) to the festive Latin groove(part 2) conveys the transition from journey to jubilation.The present rendition, written for SATB choir and piano with optional flute and oboemarks the latest evolution in the work's arrangement history. The originalaccompaniment included guitar, bass, drum, flute and electric violin. However, in 2009,through a collaboration with bassist/arranger, Perry Orfanella, a full orchestral score wasdeveloped. Most recently, in order to make the piece more accessible to church choirsand other choral groups, Phil Sims (musician/arranger and partner of Imagine MusicPublishing) reduced the orchestral score and completed the present arrangement forpiano and SATB choir.

The Apostle John’s visions in Revelation are nothing less than astounding to all readers. However, little is it known that another Hymn to Christ is neatly tucked into the very first seven verses of this last book of the Bible. John begins his Revelation (verses 1-3) with a prelude, introducing Jesus Christ and the apocalypse (revelation) that was made to him via the angel sent to describe all the things about which he was to write. He says, Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and keep what is written in it, for the time is near. After this short prelude, John delivers an epistolary opening (a greeting identifying the author and recipients), then pronounces a blessing upon the recipients-verses 4-6. After both the prelude and the opening, John immediately proceeds to another known Hymn to Christ, in verse 7, which I have called, Behold He Is Coming. When presented with the text in Revelation 1:7, I immediately thought, Where is the Gospel, the good news, in this piece? After several minutes of meditating on the text, I realized the Gospel message was right there in front of me-in the very last line: Yes, so be it [Lord], so be it, [Amen!] There will be peace! All will be known. Every single person will understand, at that point. The end, is the ushering in of a new beginning. The piece is scored in G minor for SATB with flute and Bâ™ clarinet accompaniment. In the opening phrase, we hear the clarinet on a sustained high (concert) G, which crescendos into a quick, descending sixteenth note pattern. There is urgency! The flute joins the clarinet in a duet to complete the introduction to the anthem. Then, the choir begins their haunting chant, Behold, He is coming with the clouds. Every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him. Every eye will see Him and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him . Alas, there is peace! The two instruments dissolve into an a cappella four-part chorale where the choir creates the agreement between the text and the music, modulating to the relative major (Bâ™)-all is reconciled in a final Amen!

What is Wisdom?In Proverbs 8:5-11 she says,Learn prudence, acquire intelligence, …take my instruction instead of silver,and knowledge rather than choice gold,for Wisdom is better than jewels. This suite of three songs is appropriate for use in a Christian or Jewish religious service or a secular concert. It includes a short audience participation possibility at the end of the last song. All are written for flute, piano, ethnic drum, SATB plus a high soprano part that can be a soloist. The drum part is written out, but could be improvised. The first song, Hear My Call, is short (1:49) and could be used as a call to worship in a religious service. The second song, God Created Me, (4:36) is an anthem of praise using the wonderful words of the creation of Wisdom in Proverbs 8:22-36 with a descant of the creation story in the book of Ben Sira 24:3, found in the Apocrypha. The tenors and basses sing the comparison of Wisdom with the trees of Israel, also found in Ben Sira, all in praise of Wisdom. The third song, Choose Life, (1:16) includes a chant that can be sung by the congregation or audience along with the choir. This could be used as the final hymn in a religious service. All three songs can be used separately or together. At the end of the score you will find a copy of the congregational chant which can be copied and placed in an Order of Service or Program. This collection of six traditional Spirituals is taken from a larger set of eleven titled The Life of Christ In Spirituals which I wrote as a cantata for my church choir and guest soloists many years ago. Scripture passages were read before each Spiritual, providing the Biblical context. In this booklet a two page bulletin insert with lyrics and Scripture references is provided after the instrumental parts. The scenes depicted in these Spirituals include, among others, the raising of Lazarus, the healing of the sick, and Jesus’ restoration of Peter after the Resurrection. The final song, You Can Tell The World, is an encouragement to spread the good news about Jesus. One song has an obbligato part for clarinet or soprano saxophone, and one has a part for flute. The remaining five Spirituals are available in another collection titled Five Spirituals for Holy Week, focusing on the events between Palm Sunday and the Resurrection. By inserting those five Spirituals between the 3rd and 4th songs in this collection, the booklets can be combined to perform the set as originally conceived. The songs, however, can also stand alone. The titles are We Believe This Is Jesus, Honor, Honor Unto The Dying Lamb, Oh, He Raise A Poor Lazarus, You Hear The Lambs A-Cryin', Oh Glory! and You Can Tell The World About This. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. Larry is fluent on piano, sax, clarinet, flute, guitar and bass. While in college, Larry also learned the violin, viola, trumpet, trombone, and bassoon.Larry taught public school music, and gifted classes in music for high schoolers at Eastern Oregon University, and Montana State; Larry also taught adult classical and folk guitar classes at Mt. Hood Community College. Larry also developed a rock and roll boot camp for middle schoolers that ran for several years during spring breaks at the Overlake School in Redmond, Wa. Larry was commissioned to to write the Overlake School anthem. Larry’s students have earned scholarships to the Berkeley School of music; attended the Thornton School of music; New York University and many others. Larry is a recording studio musician and besides the 5 albums he has published on CDbaby, he has appeared on many other albums, produced jingles for commercials that received air play in the Seattle market, and was the pianist for a syndicated gospel TV show. Larry has performed from Hawaii to New York city.
