Published by David Baldwin (A0.1319175). Eventide is powerfully narrative in style: a yearning and intimate prayer that our Shepherd would be near in the night (symbolic of difficult times). The piece uses M.L. Hofford's lyrics, which he penned in response to the human cost of war. On a personal level, Hofford's lyrics struck me as especially comforting after an unusually sobering death in the community. The verses are decidedly minimalist and have a chant-like beauty to them, so as to emphasize pondering. The refrains fill out in texture (up to 7 parts) as the prayer shifts to beckoning.1. Abide with me; 'tis eventide. The day is past and gone; the shadows of the evening fall; the night is coming on. Within my home a welcome guest, within my home abide.2. Abide with me, 'tis eventide. Thy walk today with me has made my heart within me burn as I communed with thee. Thy earnest words have filled my soul and kept me near thy side.3. Abide with me, 'tis eventide. And lone will be the night if I cannot commune with thee, nor find in thee my light. Mystery of the Hills is an S.A.T.B. choral work describing the wonder of the Flint Hills, a region in East Central Kansas.  I’m not a native Kansan, but whenever I drive through this area, I am enthralled by the infinite sense of expanse and gently rolling terrain. Geologists believe there was an inland seaway that covered central North America starting 290 million years ago. Over time, alternating layers of hard limestone and softer shale rocks formed. It is believed erosion caused the varied elevations of terrain, unique to the slopes of the Flint Hills. These surface layers of limestone and chert prevented the settler’s ability to farm, which in turn preserved the integrity of the soil. Today, the prairie grasses can reach 10 feet tall if not managed.  The rich grasses are prime for feeding livestock. This music attempts to provide images of traveling through the Flint Hills today, while imagining changes over eons of time, due to weather and eventually, human interaction.  Generally, the upper voices provide the imagery and some history, while the lower voices describe a bedrock foundation.  Describing the rock foundation found in the Flint Hills is also a metaphor for human strife and struggle as man, among living flora and fauna, interact with the area. The vocal ranges and harmonies are accessible for young ensembles, whether in development or with years of experience.

English.I have always been fascinated with the juxtaposition of the grandeur of Christ's birth—choirs of angels and kings bearing regal gifts—set against the humble manger scene in Bethlehem. As contradictory as this may seem, it is also a fitting representation of the reality (and miracle) of that sacred event: the Son of God come down to earth. That is the story I tried to capture in the poetry and the music of this piece. The text draws on the 'human-ness' of the Christ Child and everything He represents, punctuated by the descending scale heard in the angel's recurring motive 'Gloria in excelsis Deo' that represents the physical act of moving from heaven to earth. Written in the Stars -- text and music by Sally Whitwell Written in the Stars was originally conceived in the aftermath of the 2019-2020 bushfire season, the most destructive Australia has yet seen. At the time, we thought things couldn’t get worse, but then followed more extreme weather events, insect and rodent plagues, and a deadly pandemic that brought the world to its knees. All these things are connected, the result of humanity’s exploitative relationship with the planet and its other inhabitants. But we continue to deny the problems and to fail to act. As a species, in our more optimistic moments, we talk about having great opportunities to reinvent, that to live the status quo means that we will be faced with an untenable future. Talking about it is one thing but as far as I see it, we are not taking any opportunities to act. It is clear that we do not learn from our mistakes. As Spanish American writer George Santayana once said “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.†It is from this notion that this song was born. Written in the Stars is about society’s propensity to go through cycles of behaviour, never learning from the mistakes of the past. Broken. – these words reflect the raw and unfiltered experience of despair and sorrow. “Despondency†is movement 3 of Jay Dougherty’s Phoenix Cantata, which is a six-movement vocal and piano work that explores the themes of resilience and the transformative power of change. The music and lyrics are the creative work of Dr. Jay Dougherty, with a piano accompaniment by Justin La. Drawing inspiration from the mythical symbolism of the phoenix, this cantata narrates the journey through life's challenges and tribulations and explores how we can learn to comprehend, embrace, and grow from them. Although the Phoenix is not explicitly mentioned, the underlying message resonates with the tale of the phoenix: after facing adversity or transformation, we emerge stronger and more beautiful. Each of the 6 movements centers on a flower garden, the gardener's affection for the garden, the looming storm that could devastate it, and the gardener's eventual realization that, even after the storm, the garden remains beautiful and precious. Movement 3, Despondency, is performed a cappella and makes use of the overtone series and chord clusters to convey the gardener's torment and heartbreak as the garden has lost its innocence after a torrential storm. Program note — Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for its February 2023 Planet Home concert, Extinction sets the poem “An Extinction†(2022) by Kim Stafford for SATB mixed chorus. The three stanzas of the poem get distinct musical treatment: the first some text-painting and dissonance, the second rhythmic parts underpinning canonic melodic lines, the third a rich chorale. During my work on this piece, I happened to be traveling by train. The pitches of the train whistle snuck their way into the score as a dissonant chord. A nature soundscape may sometimes accompany this piece, although the tongue click sounds create a bit of their own aural ecosystem. Drawing attention to the unfolding catastrophe of mass extinction, Extinction hopes to inspire humans to action to prevent further loss of species biodiversity.

September 11, 2001 has had a profound affect on many people, not the least of which is the composer of this work. Written the month following the tragic events of 9/11, it is a reflection of the chaotic times in which we live. Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) is a prayer for peace to the loving God who is the God (or Allah, or Yahweh) of all people, that out of our current discord peace and harmony may come to all humanity. The work is in three sections (ABA) with a coda. The only text in the first three sections is a wailing Oh intoned by the choir. Throughout these sections the melody wanders in search of a harmonious resting point. In the B section the choir and strings part ways and resonate increased dissonance. The second A section exactly duplicates the first. The work concludes in the coda with the phrase Dona nobis pacem and an ever-increasing sense of harmonious repose. The listener may hear occasional reflections of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings or Pavane for a Dead Princess by Maurice Ravel. Dona Nobis Pacem was premiered in May 2003 by the combined choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth MN, and Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior WI, under the direction of the composer. It is purely coincidental that there are 191 measures in the work......the numbers in the date of 9/11.
