Hymns from Childhood - Set 10 (SATB)

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.719738 Composed by Various. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Sacred. Octavo. 13 pages. Curtis Hanson #4573123. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719738). As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have mostly elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. (See below for more comment on the texts in this set.) There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The hymns in this set are Children of the Heavenly Father, Day by Day, Thy Holy Wings, and Beautiful Savior. A note on the texts in this set: Having grown up in a Swedish Lutheran church, the grandson of Swedish/Norwegian immigrants, and currently being choir director of another Swedish Lutheran church, these hymns have a special place for me. This set was originally arranged for my church choir with the first verse of each in Swedish. Being under copyright, permission was obtained to use the more familiar English translations of the first three songs for local use. For this edition, I have opted to create my own texts for the first and third hymns while the second is a translation in public domain. I have also provided a verse in English in lieu of the Swedish for those Nordically challenged. The fourth hymn is not a Swedish melody but for obvious reasons is a mainstay of the Lutheran hymnal. Like the other hymns, the first verse is in Swedish while the other traditional verses are also public domain.

There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include This Is My Father's World, I Love to Tell the Story, and Faith of Our Fathers.

Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soonbecame known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns, building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness, and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of encouragement.Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. So he updated the language and gave it the new musical setting used here. ************It has long been my passion and privilege to create customized arrangements for the churches and schools with whom I have been associated. Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1143904 Composed by Igor Korneitchouk. 20th Century,A Cappella,Contemporary,Religious. Octavo. 37 pages. Studio at the Post #744209. Published by Studio at the Post (A0.1143904). Duration: 16 minutes, 33 pp. Description: Exodus is a great story that belongs to everyone. Not only is it central to Judaism, not only is it integral to the Christian Bible, it is an immortal story that has been, and continues to be, an inspiration to oppressed peoples everywhere on this planet. It is relevant not just as ancient scripture but as living text, to be rediscovered by each new generation of an ever-widening Family of Man. The theme of struggle against oppression and slavery was just as relevant to the early Christians persecuted in Ancient Rome as it was relevant to the American Civil Rights movement of the 1960's, just as relevant to the Soviet Jews wishing to emigrate as it is to the South African Blacks resisting Apartheid. From the Dark Ages and the Spanish Inquisition, to Ghandi's emancipation of India, to the Holocaust, to, full-circle, the ongoing struggles in Palestine today, the story of Exodus is a guiding light in a dim and often grim world. According to the composer: The Story of a Leader is a collection of ‘re-chorales’ I created one summer when I was totally immersed in a post-educational obsession with the 371 Chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach. We used to study these to learn the rules of harmony and voice-leading (no parallel fifths, avoid crossed voices, etc.) at the Cleveland Institute of Music where I began my compositional career. That summer, now a professor of music in my own right, I discovered many broken and bent rules by the master himself and, along with the glory of being able to work through these Chorales myself at the piano, I felt an incredible feeling of liberation and possibilities unmediated by instructors of music theory. I began by stripping away all that Bach wrote, leaving only the hymn tunes which were not his to begin with. These tunes existed long before Bach used them for his tonal experiments, some attributed to Martin Luther, or someone else, others simply listed as ‘anonymous’. The same is true for the texts, which were then translated into English mostly in the 19th century (the provenance of each can be found herein on the first page of each of my reharmonizations). In some cases I modified the text to fit the context. I selected 12 of these ‘re-chorales,’ linking them together based on their texts in a kind of logic that worked for me, and created a narrative that told The Story of a Leader (Moses). This story is highlighted in the music with such techniques as cross-modal harmonies, points of imitation, a beer drinking song in one instance, and in another, to symbolize the parting of the seas for Moses’ people, an inversion of the soprano line in the bass..

SATB chorus - Digital Download SKU: C7.CGA198 Composed by Austin C Lovelace. Advent, Palm Sunday. With Unison, Congregation. Sacred Anthem. Octavo. 8 pages. Chorister's Guild - Digital #CGA198. Published by Chorister's Guild - Digital (C7.CGA198). UPC: 749193004128.Here we have a practical setting of the familiar hymn tune TRURO that combines children's and adult choirs. The text is based on Psalm 24 and is equally suitable for use during the Advent season or on Palm Sunday when nearly all children's choirs participate in the worship service. Further, it is written so that all ages of choirs could participate. The hymn tune is punctuated by the powerful dialogue from the Psalm: 'Who is the King of Glory' The Lord of hosts, He is the King of Glory!' This ties very well the Psalm ideas to Weissel's paraphrase, and then the closing stanza concludes with a personal response EUR to open the portals of one's heart. Another feature of the anthem s that the entire congregation can join in the singing at the appropriate places by either singing directly from the hymnal or by printing the words in a bulletin (permission is granted). The work can, of course, be used as an anthem, or as an elaborated congregational hymn in addition to another 'anthem' for the day.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1316582 By Stacey Plays Hymns. By W. Romanis / Stacey Plays Hymns. Arranged by Anastace. A Cappella,Christian,Religious,Sacred,Spiritual. 4 pages. Anastace #905306. Published by Anastace (A0.1316582). This beautiful evening hymn is a perfect pairing of a solemn, contemplative melody with uplifting, scriptural lyrics that remind us of the hope we have in Christ, in this life and the next. I found this song in a very old hymnbook, so old that you could feel the raised print on the page, and loved the lyrics so much and felt that a minor melody would suit it extraordinarily well. This piece works well as a choir anthem for funerals or for any evensong themed service, and is written in a comfortable, singable range for everyday singers. It works well either with a soft organ accompaniment or a capella, to showcase the rich vocal harmony reminiscent of Elaine Hagenburg or John Rutter. For other formats including large print or special congregtional versions contact me at staceyplayshymns@gmail.com and I'll be glad to make them especially for you. Please let me know if there is any other way I can serve you as a congregation or fellow music/choir director as I endeavour to write several new choral anthems per year, along with my other recording work.Thank you for supporting modern hymnwriters and musicians! As heard on YouTube!

Choral Choir,Choral,SATB Chorus - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1490010 Composed by Text: Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) Tune: Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914. Arranged by Ken Litton. Christian,Lent,Religious,Sacred. 11 pages. Artist of Note, Inc. #1066874. Published by Artist of Note, Inc. (A0.1490010). Whiter Than the Snow/Eden Reeder Latta - Henry Southwick Perkins BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN arr. Ken Litton (ASCAP)As an SBC music missionary active in Brazil I quickly discovered the hymns missionaries had taken with them as the work gained impetus from the 1890s when the Bagbys arrived to build on the foundation laid by early pioneers like Solomon Ginsburg. I found myself leading those hymns from the nearly 100 year old Cantor Cristão (Christian Singer) in the strongly attended evening services at the Igreja Batista Rio Doce (Sweet River Baptist Church) in Recife, with people literally leaning in through the windows from outside to sing along. Just a normal p.m. attendance or... curiosity about the missionary leading? No, certainly it was the message of the gospel in these great hymns and in the Brazilians’ creative work as well. I mainly remember holding that small print hymnal in one hand and leading with the other (shaking badly) and singing in Portuguese! From that kind of congregational participation I vividly remember the hymn Blessed be the Fountain by Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) and Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914) with it’s energetic dotted eighth and sixteenth rhythm figures and text of confession based on Zechariah 13:1. That text was very important in the lives of disciples in Brazil and in my own heart. Here I have used only the verses of the text and tune, simply smoothing out the rhythm and adjusting the lyric to more modern usage (yet preserving the devotional pronouns Thee, Thy and Thine). The tune BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN is altered in rhythm, tempo and one descending interval from the original. The arrangement is by me, having built the intro, interlude and key change as well as the ending from the material that constituted the refrain in the origina. As a bridge and additional textual/musical impulse into the key change and final verse I’ve interpolated the refrain from the well-known gospel hymn Whiter than Snow (FISCHER) by James Nicholson and William G. Fischer. The voices include a wide variety of unison, two-part and four-part passages that are well within the capability of the average church choir. The accompaniment difficulty level is about as minimal as it can be I hope, while still reflecting support for the voices, a measure of variety as well as some real independence.I certainly think choirs of some ability and their dedicated accompanists will enjoyWhiter Than the Snow as much as I have in developing it.

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
Chorale SATB
Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.976711 Composed by Isaac W…
(+)
Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.976711 Composed by Isaac Watts / Lowell Mason. Arranged by Robert Myers. Christian,Easter,Sacred. Octavo. 31 pages. WheatMyer Music #4775085. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976711). When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, written by the Father of English Hymnody, Isaac Watts, in 1707 and later matched with Lowell Mason’s 1824 tune, HAMBURG, has long stood at the forefront of English hymnody. This arrangement, taken from my Passion Week cantata, Wounded, Bleeding, Still Proceeding, allows the full talent-spectrum of the Body of Christ to contemplate His sacrifice and offer their devotion. The first two stanzas feature an alto/soprano duet, set in a minor key with frequent diminished and augmented chords to reflect the despair and loss of a witness to the crucifixion. The entire third stanza, set for SATB chorus, never really moves off the F minor tonic until the end. That, and the relentless pounding of the bass line, ponders the witnesses anguish and our vicarious experience of it through Scripture. So, sing these stanzas sadly – they are sad! When the choir enters, be sure to observe the swelling crescendos/diminuendos as the sorrow and love mingle together. The fourth stanza offers optional congregational participation and may be used to provide a responsorial to the Word of God or a preparation for the Table. The choir sings this stanza in four part harmony as the congregation joins on the melody. It stays in a major key and closely follows the traditional consonances used in Lowell Mason’s harmonization; thus, the choral parts will feel familiar and the congregational melody will flow naturally. Take the text literally (Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.) and sing it firmly, enthusiastically, passionately, but never triumphantly. Sing it as a song of personal devotion to commit all that you have, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, to the one who humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Phil 2:8b) so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor 5:21)The music is well within the grasp of any ensemble competent with traditional SATB anthems. The piano/organ accompaniments are straightforward yet very colorful. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross is an unapologetic Christian worship anthem suitable for sacred services, yet does not compromise on artistic expression. The parts provided in this version include a full score, a piano-vocal octavo (which may be performed alone), and organ and timpani/percussion parts. Neither organ or timpani are required but adding either or both provides a deep and rich experience. Parts for reduced orchestra (strings and single winds) are available separately.

Octavo. 5 pages. Curtis Hanson #2857833. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719681). The chorale in this set of variations is part of a project celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The German chorale has a heritage which forms the basis of many of the hymns associated with the Protestant church, many of which have a close association with Martin Luther either in melody or in text. These chorales have been set by many composers in the late Renaissance and Baroque periods in various harmonizations and vocal/instrumental genres, culminating in the grandeur of those by J. S. Bach. This set of variations celebrates the German Lutheran chorale in the Luther-Bach lineage.

THE GREAT HUMILITY OF CHRIST (SATB) – Philippians 2:5-11

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.926663 Composed by Michael A. Morizio. A Cappella,Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 7 pages. M.A. Morizio #3588423. Published by M.A. Morizio (A0.926663). In chapter two of Paul's letter to the Philippians, Paul begins speaking to his readers about encouragement, comfort from love, participation in the Spirit, and godly affection and sympathy for one another. He says, we are to count others as more important than ourselves. He pleads, Complete my joy by doing these things. From this point, Paul breaks immediately into this other known 1st century Hymn to Christ (Verses 5-11), which I have called, The Great Humility of Christ. The hymn text is a beautiful exposition of the Gospel; Christ in the form of God, did not hold onto (grasp) His equality with God, but humbled Himself and took on the human form of a servant (slave) and poured Himself out for all of mankind. The anthem is composed for SATB (a cappella) choir in two stanzas, with a bridge section and a coda. The piece is scored in D minor, but weaves between D minor and G Major (representing the dual natures of Christ-fully God and fully man). After the first stanza, regarding Christ’s taking on human flesh, the unthinkable happens; Christ humbles Himself in holy obedience to be put to death, even a humiliating and repugnant death on a cross. Here in the anthem we find the musical bridge between the two stanzas with the sopranos holding onto a single note (high D) followed by a cascade of dissonant suspensions, one voice handing off to the other, finally resolving in a descending scale. The second stanza declares God’s having exalted Christ as a consequence of His sacrifice, giving Him a name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. The final coda (in G Major) trumpets the pronouncement that; Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father.

Choral Choir,Choral,SATB Chorus - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1492434 Composed by Orlando Gibbons. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christian,Christmas,Renaissance,Sacred. 5 pages. Con Spirito Music #1069110. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1492434). As On The Night is a song text for Christmas Day by English poet, satirist, pamphleteer, and hymn-writer George Wither (1588-1667), whose life spanned the tumultuous period in English history that included the reigns of Elizabeth I, James I, and Charles I and the continuous tension between Catholic and Protestant faith and practice. Desiring to counter the practice of exclusively using psalms as texts for congregational singing in worship, Wither published in 1623 The Hymnes and Songs of the Church, with The First Part comprehend[ing] Hymns, and such parcels of Holy Scripture, as may properly be sung, with some other ancient Songs and Creeds, and The Second Part consist[ing] of Spiritual Songs, appropriated to the several Times and Occasions observable in the Church of England. As On The Night appears in part two as a song to commemorate Christmas Day. Its first stanza is a retelling of elements of the Nativity story as found in Luke 2:7-20; its second stanza is a consideration of the Incarnation and work of Christ (Our flesh he wore, our sin to wear away; Our curse he bore, that we escape it may; And wept for us that we might sing for aye.).The music accompanying As On the Night is Song 46, one of many tunes written for Wither's collection by English composer and keyboardist Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625). As Gibbons notated only the melody and bass lines of his tunes, the harmonization in this arrangement for SATB choir and organ is largely that of The English Hymnal (1906). ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). THE ICON OF THE INVISIBLE GOD (SATB) – Colossians 1:15-20

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.926661 Composed by Michael A. Morizio. Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 15 pages. M.A. Morizio #3588399. Published by M.A. Morizio (A0.926661). In the first chapter of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, we discover the next known Hymn to Christ right after his introductory passages, beginning at the 15th verse. Paul opens this letter with a blessing, then immediately flows to one of the 1st century hymns, which I have called, The Icon of the Invisible God. The lyrics of this hymn are declarative, bold and illuminating as to whom the Christ figure is-the icon, the very image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. The text makes it abundantly clear that Jesus is the authority; that He was there before all things, that He created all things, and that through Him all things hold together. This anthem is composed for SATB choir with Pipe Organ accompaniment. The meter is set to 6/8 time, with a rhythm tempo of Totally Alive; which is one actual definition of the word Holy. The anthem starts at a good clip (♪=100). The key is G Major, with an incidental and occasional flatted 5th (Dâ™) as a surprise-landing befitting to the text presented, as if to say, This is so amazing, how can it be? The flatted 5th gives the piece it's own identity and causes the listener to stand up and take notice whenever it occurs. When the hymn's lyrics glide into the all-important resolution, having made peace through the blood of the cross, the song retards and lands on a surprising musical cadence, the sixth chord (E Major). In this piece, the pipe organ is boldly featured as it supports and under girds the musical line, occasionally trumpeting its own victorious motifs and adding some contrapuntal elements, such as this duplet motif, in the pedal line. The final lyrics about Christ having reconciled everything to Himself, whether things on the earth or in the heavens, finish the piece with a great, ‘High-Church’ choral ending.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Digital Download SKU: A0.933612 Composed by Carl Maria von Weber. Arranged by Thomas Coker. Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 6 pages. Thomas Rembert Coker Jr #3504391. Published by Thomas Rembert Coker Jr (A0.933612). About the hymn According to Scotty Wayne Gray’s description in Handbook to the Baptist Hymnal (1992), John Wesley first published Depth of Mercy! In 1740 under the heading After a Relapse into Sin. The original hymn included 13 four-line stanzas. Later, these were reduced to a more manageable four stanzas, here altered by Brenda Coker. This hymn has been very meaningful, especially in Methodist circles where it has been published in almost all of their hymnals. It clearly reflects the struggle of repentance and acceptance of God’s forgiveness in Christ. The tune is taken from the opening chorus of Carl Maria von Weber’s last opera, Oberon and was put in hymn format by the organist of the Center Church in Hartford, CT, Henry W. Greatorex, in 1851. About the arrangement Originally written in the late 70’s or early 80’s for the Sanctuary Choir at Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, VA, this arrangement was published in 1998 by Alliance Music in Houston, TX. Given back to the composer about 2009, the current version uses the same page and bar numbers as the originally published version.

Arr. Gary W. Matthews.<br> <br> Traditional hymn by Anne Hawks and Robert Lowry This hymn setting offers a new take on an old classic with close harmonies and a new meter. Shifting this hymn into 4/4 creates a pleasing and meditative feel. The setting builds to a powerful final stanza and a return to the hymn's original 3/4 meter, closing with the quiet, prayerful plea, "I need, I need, I need thee every hour!".

SATB choir unaccompanied - Moderately Easy - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8208-E Composed by Anthony Antolini and Dimitri S. Bortniansky. Arranged by Anthony Antolini. Advanced/Collegiate. Church Anniversary, Confirmation, Memorial, Classical. Instrument part. 10 pages. Duration 4 minutes, 15 seconds. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8208-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8208-E). French, Russian. The Russian version, Kol' slaven, sets the poetry of M. M. Kheraskov (1733–1807), a Mason. The hymn was first associated with Freemasonry in Russia, but its popularity quickly grew. It became an unofficial national anthem until it was superseded by Lvov's “God save the Tsar.†Except during the Soviet period (1917–1991), Kol' slaven has been used in Russia at public gatherings and military ceremonies such as the christening of ships, lowering or raising of the flag, and at military funerals. Kol' slaven also became popular among émigré Russians and has been associated with Russian emigration in many countries. The singing of hymns with multiple verses in chorale style is not a part of Russian Orthodox worship. For this reason, Bortniansky's hymn is not considered liturgical in the Russian Church but is used mostly for secular ceremonies. The language of the hymn is Russian (although with several archaic words and word endings) rather than the language of Russian Orthodox worship, Church Slavonic. In Germany, the hymn is used not only in worship but also for military ceremonies and is occasionally sung as a prelude to the German national anthem. This scholarly performance edition includes extensive notes concerning the history of Bortniansky and this piece, performance notes, the editorial method of the English singing version, and a pronunciation guide for the Russian transliteration.Duration: 4:15.

Eight Hymns of Isaac Watts

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.836712 Composed by Brian Joyce. Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 21 pages. Brian Joyce #4325937. Published by Brian Joyce (A0.836712). If you ever need a break from the soundbyte theology found in so many contemporary Christian lyrics, why not revisit the words of Isaac Watts (1674-1748), who could stretch a single coherent thought across multiple verses of his hymns? Watts was a prolific writer on many subjects, including geography, astronomy, ethics, and psychology. His book on Logic became a standard university text, being used at Oxford for over 100 years. But his greatest desire was to assist Christians in the worship of God and it is his hymns for which he is best remembered today. These old words are here set to new music which represents a blending of three different traditions: First, and most obvious, is the rustic sound of early American shape-note singing. Second is the strong linearity of 13th century Ars Antiqua voice leading, in which each part was more or less independent. And third is my own fondness for mixed meters and sonorities built on fourths and seconds. Yet it all works somehow: these are actually very singable hymns once the choir has acclimated to the style. Most fall comfortably into a simple diatonic language and would present no jarring problems for the listener. Five of the hymns are for standard mixed voices (SATB); one is for men’s voices (TTB); one for women’s (SSA) and the last, a Doxology, is in six parts (SSATTB) with a florid threefold amen. There is admittedly a certain sameness about these settings; perhaps it’s best if they are not all sung in one go, cover to cover. Taken individually, however, there is no reason they couldn’t make for a refreshing change from the usual church anthem, and a group of three or four could easily find a place on a choral recital program.
