Mist-Covered Mountains is a very accessible SATB choral arrangement of the gorgeous 19th century Gaelic song Chì Mi Na Mòrbheanna (usually translated as The Mist-Covered Mountains of Home). The original song was written in 1856 by John Cameron, and since then has entered the folk tradition. It was made famous by The Rankin Family in the 1970s, and many other folk artists have covered it. This arrangement was written for Belsize Community Choir in London, and is well-suited to community choirs. The refrain is in the original Gaelic, but the verses are in English.The Gaelic refrain is easily learned and a pronunciation guide is included. The tune passes among different voice parts, and is sometimes sung in unison. The (optional) piano gives solidity and depth – like the mountains themselves. There is also a part for soprano recorder. If performing the song a cappella, start at bar 7, end at bar 86, and leave out the third beat of bars 38, 54, 70 and 78.

Written in the Stars -- text and music by Sally Whitwell Written in the Stars was originally conceived in the aftermath of the 2019-2020 bushfire season, the most destructive Australia has yet seen. At the time, we thought things couldn’t get worse, but then followed more extreme weather events, insect and rodent plagues, and a deadly pandemic that brought the world to its knees. All these things are connected, the result of humanity’s exploitative relationship with the planet and its other inhabitants. But we continue to deny the problems and to fail to act. As a species, in our more optimistic moments, we talk about having great opportunities to reinvent, that to live the status quo means that we will be faced with an untenable future. Talking about it is one thing but as far as I see it, we are not taking any opportunities to act. It is clear that we do not learn from our mistakes. As Spanish American writer George Santayana once said “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.†It is from this notion that this song was born. Written in the Stars is about society’s propensity to go through cycles of behaviour, never learning from the mistakes of the past. Gloria in Excelsis joyously proclaims the angels' words at Christmas, firstly on the organ alone, then with the organ accompanying the same theme in the voices ending on an added 2nd chord. Now fully re-set in Musescore. NB, following the title page are two sample pages - the first page of each anthem. To save paper, print page 1, then 4-7. English.The Seasons was commissioned by the South Bend Chamber Singers, Nancy Menk, conductor, and first performed on March 3, 2013 by the South Bend Chamber Singers with the Euclid Quartet in a concert devoted to music about the weather. The texts for this work were selected by the composer, and they represent three different time periods, the 17th, 19th and early 20th centuries, to show that writers have long been fascinated by the seasons and by the distinct weather conditions that each season brings. Although certain types of weather, such as wind or rain, may occur in any of the seasons, the descriptions of weather in these four poems present specific weather conditions which commonly occur in each of the four seasons: a still, hot, sultry day interrupted by the movement of a light breeze from the hills (summer); the cooling morning mists and light frost which signal the coming of winter (autumn); the bitter iciness of fierce winds and frozen air-in this poem, further compared with man's ingratitude (winter); the warm rains and southerly winds that melt the ice and bring about new life (spring). Throughout this piece various musical devices are employed to underscore or even interpret the words. These devices include text painting, contrapuntal structures (double canon and fugue), and dramatically shifting harmonic colors as each season unfolds. The contrasting performing forces of mixed choir and string quartet are particularly well-suited for presenting, very colorfully, the various musical depictions of the weather conditions and characteristics of each of the seasons. -Frank FerkoDuration: 2:40.

The Goodness of the Lord grew out of the striking statement of faith found in Psalms 27: 13. While much of the psalm indicates that its author was dealing with some serious life issues, in this verse the psalmist affirms a trust in the Lord’s help: not salvation for the next life, but rescue and shelter within the present lifetime. This piece attempts to portray such trust in God during times of struggle and pain.At least two soloists are necessary, but the solo parts may be divided among more singers if desired to suit your ensemble. The piece may be performed successfully using only chorus, soloists, and piano; however, there is also an orchestration available (S0.249231) for trumpet, tenor sax, guitar, and upright bass. Be warned that the tenor sax part is advanced-but someone who regularly handles musical theater woodwind books should have no problem. Including a drum set is recommended if you have someone who can find his or her way through the piece and enhance its gospel flavor; there is no written drum set chart, because the person you would want to play this piece with you won’t need it.Enjoy!
