Choral Choir,Choral (SATB divisi) - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1308788 Composed by Charles Tenet. Arranged by Tobi Crawford. Jazz. 11 pages. Tobi Crawford #898034. Published by Tobi Crawford (A0.1308788). *Purchase 10 copies to perform this piece with your ensemble of any size*Purchase the instrumental pack (bass and drum part) here: https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/en/product/beyond-the-sea-instrumental-pack-only-22605052.htmlThis arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

Pace #1050138. Published by Kevin G. Pace (A0.1472492). A beautiful, sacred hymn with music by Kevin G. Pace and text by Mary Ann W. Snowball.Text:Like the fog in a storm and the sun who hides its face,Like pure shadows at noon, or a star out of place,Like the moon overhead in a dark and unclear night,I beseech more earnestly, seeking God’s pure light.Like bold sighs braving pain in Gethsemane’s lone space,Like the rock placed therein meant for grief’s leaning place,As blood dripping like rain for the pain is far too great,I beseech more earnestly, seeking God’s own traits.Like a child asking “How?” to his Father up above,Like each step to ascend on his ladder of love,Like each stretch sure to reach far beyond what I now know,I beseech more earnestly, trusting God to show. All at once I see light like a ray in shadowed sky,And it peers through each sphere as God’s voice in reply. Then more light, as if day, sheds its warmth into my soul . . .I still ask more earnestly, trusting to be whole.Perfect light comes from Him as He answers from his sky; From my bowed, lowered head, I can know Him on high.Perfect love shines below, from his ever-holy form,Right into my mended soul . . . his love to adorn.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1074352 Composed by Stanley M Hoffman. Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 32 pages. Stanleymhoffman.com #678653. Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1074352). PROGRAM NOTES As of the present writing, this choral tone poem had been gestating for over thirty years, and the concept and harmonies for it for over forty years. In the 1980s I began to work with the latter two in my brief orchestral piece Little Sea Nocturne. When reading the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), I am most struck by how musical they are. When recited aloud they exhibit their own rhythmic sense. I was eager to incorporate those rhythms into my music. I had long been familiar with his poem The City In the Sea and began to sketch choral passages for the present choral tone poem in the 1990s. It took me until 2022 to complete it because I required many more years of experience at my craft to do so to lead into out of the choruses. In 2012 I completed a seven-minute unaccompanied version of the choruses with music unique to and unifying it simply called The City In the Sea. In composing The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem, my goal was to write a piece that, while steeped in tradition, sounds unlike anything in the literature that had come before it. The result is an original hybrid work that successfully and memorably combines salient aspects of the tonal, atonal, and modal musical languages into an organic whole. George Perle coined the term “twelve-tone tonality†to describe the music of Alban Berg and composers influenced by him such as Luigi Dallapiccola. The last title of which I am aware that accomplishes anything remotely related to what I am trying to accomplish musically in this choral tone poem is the piece Paradiso Choruses by Donald Martino (1974). However, I take twelve-tone tonality in entirely other directions in my work. That the duration of The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem came out to be thirteen minutes seems appropriate for piece about a sunken city. Rather than write program notes that narrate how the music unfolds I will simply shout out the most memorable aspects of what careful listeners will discern: a recurring heartbeat motif; shifting polychordal harmonies; echo technique; rhythmic diminutions and augmentations; an a cappella chorus featuring those harmonies with a surprisingly memorable recuring theme on top; sensuous flute duets; string section underpinnings by way of either sustained passages or wave-like gestures; tritone-related melodies, harmonies, and tone centers; several strategically placed grand pauses; tritone-related modal-sounding passages; melodic and chord clusters, especially the two climactic ones. Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1157142 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 15 pages. Sally Whitwell #757469. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1157142). Written in the Stars -- text and music by Sally Whitwell Written in the Stars was originally conceived in the aftermath of the 2019-2020 bushfire season, the most destructive Australia has yet seen. At the time, we thought things couldn’t get worse, but then followed more extreme weather events, insect and rodent plagues, and a deadly pandemic that brought the world to its knees. All these things are connected, the result of humanity’s exploitative relationship with the planet and its other inhabitants. But we continue to deny the problems and to fail to act. As a species, in our more optimistic moments, we talk about having great opportunities to reinvent, that to live the status quo means that we will be faced with an untenable future. Talking about it is one thing but as far as I see it, we are not taking any opportunities to act. It is clear that we do not learn from our mistakes. As Spanish American writer George Santayana once said “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.†It is from this notion that this song was born. Written in the Stars is about society’s propensity to go through cycles of behaviour, never learning from the mistakes of the past. Written in the Stars was originally commissioned by Adelaide Chamber Singers, directed by Carl Crossin. Sally Whitwell January 2023.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - SKU: A0.719738 Composed by Various. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Sacred. Octavo. 13 pages. Curtis Hanson #4573123. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719738). As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have mostly elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. (See below for more comment on the texts in this set.) There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The hymns in this set are Children of the Heavenly Father, Day by Day, Thy Holy Wings, and Beautiful Savior. A note on the texts in this set: Having grown up in a Swedish Lutheran church, the grandson of Swedish/Norwegian immigrants, and currently being choir director of another Swedish Lutheran church, these hymns have a special place for me. This set was originally arranged for my church choir with the first verse of each in Swedish. Being under copyright, permission was obtained to use the more familiar English translations of the first three songs for local use. For this edition, I have opted to create my own texts for the first and third hymns while the second is a translation in public domain. I have also provided a verse in English in lieu of the Swedish for those Nordically challenged. The fourth hymn is not a Swedish melody but for obvious reasons is a mainstay of the Lutheran hymnal. Like the other hymns, the first verse is in Swedish while the other traditional verses are also public domain.

Steubing Memorial Music Fund, Inc. #773130. Published by Carl M. Steubing Memorial Music Fund, Inc. (A0.1172921). “I hope that he can see in me, his brotherâ€. “Brothers†is an original musical work. The music is composed by Carl M. Steubing and the words are from a poem written by Carl’s good friend Miles J. Martin.  The opening lyrics, “Who is that manâ€, refers to an older Asian gentleman Miles encountered during vacation in the Far East. They were strangers that could not communicate, but when their eyes met they smiled at each other, and Miles recognized the man as his brother.  Shortly thereafter Miles sat down and wrote the poem called “Brothersâ€. Carl M. Steubing wrote the music, and it was published in 1967. This song was very relevant back in 1967 but has even more significance today. Brothers (and sisters) around the world are looking to belong in our chaotic world. They are searching for more connections, more empathy, and more love for each other.  No matter where you are from, the color of your skin, the faith you follow, or the person you choose to love, may we all find a way to look into each other’s eyes, smile and see in each other our brother or sister.

Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.1211960). “What If I Seek for Love†(1601), by English composer Robert Jones (c.1577-1617), who was one of the most prolific composers and lutenists of his day.  Of the more popular musical forms of English Renaissance (the late 15th century to the early 1600’s) was the lute song: a piece for single voice accompanied by the lute.  Most lute songs are about love and tended to be a rather melancholy affair with disdainful ladies refusing to acknowledge the ardent advances of hopeful lovers – as is “What If I Seek for Loveâ€.  This 2023 setting is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble and keyboard accompaniment.  It can be performed either a cappella or with accompaniment, the SATB voicings will stand alone  The simple melody and poetry of Jones is retained and embellished with the piano accompaniment.  This is an excellent piece for young singers, introducing them to style, form and technique.  Performance time: 1:30+-.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - SKU: A0.933611 Composed by John Stafford Smith. Arranged by Thomas Coker. Folk,Patriotic. Octavo. 4 pages. Thomas Rembert Coker Jr #3503513. Published by Thomas Rembert Coker Jr (A0.933611). In 2009 when Sanctuary Choir of South Main Baptist Church in Houston where I served as Music Minister was scheduled to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros baseball game, I carefully examined the several arrangements in our library and other resources. Finding nothing which met the simple, straight-forward criteria I was searching for, we created this simple arrangement. Since its addition to the music library it has proven very useful on numerous occasions for a variety of groups. About the National Anthem:The lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner were written on September 14, 1814 from a British ship in the Baltimore Harbor where attorney Francis Scott Key had waited anxiously through the night as the twenty-five hour bombing of Ft. McHenry progressed. He had been sent to negotiate the release of an American civilian and then was held on board the ship. At the dawn’s early light when the flag could still be seen indicating the British had not taken the fort, he jotted down this poem which on March 3, 1931 finally became the National Anthem of the United States. Interestingly, it was Robert Ripley who in November of 1929 drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon, Ripley’s Believe It or Not stating Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem. With the encouragement of John Philip Sousa, President Herbert Hoover signed into law the adoption of The Star-Spangled Banner to rectify this situation. According to the Smithsonian, the melody, written by John Stafford Smith, was originally titled Anacreon in Heaven. Anacreon was an ancient Greek poet known for his love of wine and love. The song had become the constitutional song of a London gentlemen’s club called the Anacreontic Society. Could this explain the wide range of the melody? By utilizing this tune to the moving text, this once merry drinking song took on a bold new and powerful meaning. Thomas Coker, August 27, 2015

David Rain, Choral Composer #698441. Published by David Rain, Choral Composer (A0.1094371). “How heavy lies the heart†has drawn inspiration from the traditional French Christmas carol, “Quelle est cette odeur agréableâ€, which John Gay also set as a boisterous drinking song in the Beggar’s Opera, “Fill every glass, for wine inspires us!†The song also draws inspiration from Josquin’s Missa Pange Lingua. I dedicate this piece to my friends in the composer/singer collective, the Ad hoc Chorale, who tested out this piece in one of our informal workshops and offered valuable comments. Optional endings. Note that choirs have been given the option to choose which of the 3 endings they would like to sing, depending on how they feel the “story line†in the song should best reach its conclusion: (1) The “happy†ending appears to indicate that the narrator has been reunited with the friend or lover who departed. (2) The “less happy†ending plants a seed of doubt that no such reunion has happened; it may be in the narrator’s head. (3) The “even less happy†ending leaves listeners in even more doubt. NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group them together into a choral suite that I have called The Ottawa Four Seasons Suite. “How heavy lies the heart†seemed to work perfectly as the musical representative of an autumnal spirit.

The Tree Song is one of many songs from the novel The Earth Woman Tree Woman Quartet. This piece for two cellos, a viola and a double bass, with SATB choir evokes the deep voice of the tree. The choral part is not difficult, but the strings are challenging. The string parts can be played on a synthesizer. Contact Connie at connie@deephum for help with this. The song is short, two and half minutes and might be performed with some of the other songs from the book. Some of the songs can be found on the website www.earthwomantreewoman.com. The words are: Waves of things of forms I am exist in dreams within me,flow through the sap of trees to come and leaves to come, falling, decaying, the soil I am, a nutrient for things living, eating the earth, water and sun, fruit I become, feeding the unrooted beings ever I'm giving. And then I am free.I stretch my wings and fling myself into the air.I sing, I call. My joy is beyond any earthly care. The snap of the jaws of the four-legged one is only a moment of painfor I am living again with a diff'rent name. And when this life's done the worms I become and pass to the earth to gain my rebirth. This setting of Psalm 130 (Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord) was written as a response to the covid-19 lockdown crisis. It is a prayer for help in the midst of difficulty and sin, waiting for God with hope in his compassion and forgiveness. Its tempo marking of soulful, but rhythmic highlights the character of the weary, bluesey theme in B flat minor and its falling chromatic accompaniment. However, there are signs of hope throughout the setting, and the last verse mixes its principal key of G major with the original rise and fall of the minor third interval (G to B flat). Hope is, after all, sure and certain, yet it is a trust in a God who is ultimately unseen and unknownable.Psalm 130: Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice,O let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. If you, O Lord, should mark our iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, that you may be feared. I wait for the Lord, I wait for the Lord.My soul waits, and in his word I hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord, for with the Lord there is steadfast love and great power to redeem. The Lord will redeem you, O Israel, from all your iniquities.

See text below: Why did the Savior die for me on Calvary’s mount? Why did He suffer readily with never a doubt? How could his Father bear to view as He hung with pain? Was there a cov’ring then He drew like sun over rain? The Savior died for me on Calvary’s hill. He loved his Father; He acknowledged pure will. The only purpose there was true charity. The sole intention then was His love for me. Why did the Savior suffer for a sinner like me? How could his off’ring open doors to let me go free? How could He be alone that day when blood ran like tears? Why would He bear this cross to say there are no more fears? The Savior suffered more than any will know, So He could be with me wherever I go. I’ll never be alone; His focus I’ll be. He’ll never leave His child, a sinner like me.

Published by Christopher Brown (A0.747199). About the song: In John 14, Jesus says, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. We are severely mistaken if we think that any other road leads to peace with God. No amount of good deeds could pay for the debt we owe. But we are also mistaken if we think that we are too far gone from Christ's reach. This song is a message for both the self-righteous and the hopeless. There is a Way that leads to life forevermore with our Heavenly Father, and His Name is Jesus Christ. All who enter through the gate of Christ by faith will be saved. He came that you might have life, and have it to the full. Rejoice! If you can believe, believe! Can be performed with piano accompaniment only, OR with additional band members, OR with full orchestra*.Please Note:You can purchase individual copies of the choral score separately on Sheet Music Plus. The Promise of Liberty, available for either SATB or unison/2-part treble choir with optional guitar or piano accompaniment, is an adaptation of the sonnet The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus (1883). The sonnet was written to raise money for the construction of the Statue of Liberty's pedestal and has graced the entrance to the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor since 1945. The chorus for this work is adapted from the Lazarus poem, while the verses are new text written by the composer. Duration ca. 3 minutes. The Promise of Liberty Winds blow fierce and foul storms rage. Safe shelter seems a hopeless dream. But in the dark a promise beams, a beacon to a golden age. [Chorus] Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Give me the wretched from your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door, I lift my lamp beside the golden door. So cries the strong heroic woman, raising her arm to light the way. Her words ring out from day to day to greet each wave of immigrants. [Repeat chorus] Some crossed the sea in a tempest squall. More came by land up the hemisphere. Still there's room for everyone here. The promise of liberty welcomes all. [Repeat chorus] Winds still blow and storms still threaten the shelter we build in this new land. But here we weave a fabric grand Made strong from many colored threads. [Repeat chorus].

Instrumentation: SATB a cappella choir (with divisi)Duration: 6'Completed: January 2017I wrote the poem The Landowner a few years ago in a poetry class at my undergraduate alma mater, Bucknell University. When I heard that there was an opportunity to write for a student formed choir at Peabody, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to set one of my previously written poems to music. I looked back at poems which I had written, and came across The Landowner. It continues to intrigue me to this day since I am still uncertain as to what it is about. This enigmatic, earthy, and hauntingly repetitive poem poses more questions than it does provide answers. This is something which fascinates me, and which I sought to depict in the music. The Landowner:The landowner sends out his three servants. Each go to work in separate fields; To rake the leaves,to harvest the crops,to pluck the fruits from the tree.Working endlessly,They turn their heads from each other. They refuse to help, they refuse to talk.Good work is done, but for what purpose? The landowner plucks fresh leavesfrom a papaya tree.Although he is blind,he still sees the sun.The mooing of cows andcrowing of roosters ceases. He stands in the shade, waiting for his servants. They offer him papaya,He shakes his head

A sacred hymn about the gathering of Israel on both sides of the veil. Music by Kevin G. Pace. Text by Mark R. Fotheringham. See text below:
The path that leads to covenant is open to mankind,
But people often need a friend, the path to help them find.
An invitation to the truth will serve each person well,
To join the work of gathering on both sides of the veil.
Oh may I seek my neighbors? good by pointing them to God,
And see the joy that comes to those who grasp the iron rod.
The missionary zeal I feel is not some holy grail,
But simple service to each friend on both sides of the veil.
To do the work of gathering needs little more than love
And listening to heaven's voice, the Spirit from above.
Expand my heart to care for all that I may never fail
To reach the ones who wait for me on both sides of the veil.

Ropp (A0.971687). I Stand the Watch Before the Dawn is a dramatic piece for SATB choir and tenor and soprano soloists, for the season of Advent. The piece begins with the solo tenor and piano, in which the tenor plays the part of the night watchman and expresses longing for the light, and anguish at the condition of the people in the darkness. The tenor solo ends with the words Why have you forsaken us? The choir then enters a cappella (in performance, the choir can be doubled on organ using soft strings if necessary--it's difficult for the choir to get its starting pitches), and a soaring solo soprano provides the answer: the Light has come, but more than that, You were never alone; you are never alone; you will never be alone. One staging idea for this piece is to have the solo tenor up front, and the choir and soprano unseen in the rear, especially if there is a rear balcony that will hold the choir. However it is staged, this piece provides worshipers with a powerful and unforgettable reassurance that they do not face their darkest hours alone. (Please note that the MP3 file has some oddities in the dynamics; the sudden changes are artifices of how the MP3 is rendered from Finale and should not be interpreted literally.).
