During the late spring of 2017, I began composing a new choral piece based on the 1 Timothy 3:16 text. I was studying Paul's first letter to Timothy at the time when this particular passage jumped out at me. Not only was it an efficient summary of the Gospel message, but it was also a textual grouping, or form, such as might be found in a traditional hymn. What I was reading were indeed lyrics to an actual 1st Century Hymn to Christ, the music of which has since been lost. I entitled my piece, Great is the Mystery. I composed the anthem for SATB (a cappella), and set it to the ESV translation of the scripture. Based on its context, I suspected the song would work great for Ascension Sunday. Our choir sang the piece beautifully, crescendoing at the finish to the words, Believed on in the world and taken up in glory! Later that spring, I played the piece for a dear friend of mine who is Pastor at Immanuel Church in Manchester, New Hampshire. What he told me was actually a bit stunning. He informed me that there were (at least) seven specific known Hymns to Christ written into the New Testament Scriptures, whose text is found among the writings of the apostles’ Paul and John. The 1 Timothy 3:16 verse that I had selected for my piece was indeed one of those texts. At that moment, Pastor Don and I made a pact. If he were to supply me with the literal Greek translations of the other six known Hymns to Christ, I would set out to compose brand new anthems for them all. A new musical collaboration had begun. With this short introduction serving as the genesis of my new song cycle, I offer you these new Seven Anthems to Christ based on the seven known ancient ‘Hymns to Christ' texts found in the New Testament.

Mystery of the Hills is an S.A.T.B. choral work describing the wonder of the Flint Hills, a region in East Central Kansas.  I’m not a native Kansan, but whenever I drive through this area, I am enthralled by the infinite sense of expanse and gently rolling terrain. Geologists believe there was an inland seaway that covered central North America starting 290 million years ago. Over time, alternating layers of hard limestone and softer shale rocks formed. It is believed erosion caused the varied elevations of terrain, unique to the slopes of the Flint Hills. These surface layers of limestone and chert prevented the settler’s ability to farm, which in turn preserved the integrity of the soil. Today, the prairie grasses can reach 10 feet tall if not managed.  The rich grasses are prime for feeding livestock. This music attempts to provide images of traveling through the Flint Hills today, while imagining changes over eons of time, due to weather and eventually, human interaction.  Generally, the upper voices provide the imagery and some history, while the lower voices describe a bedrock foundation.  Describing the rock foundation found in the Flint Hills is also a metaphor for human strife and struggle as man, among living flora and fauna, interact with the area. The vocal ranges and harmonies are accessible for young ensembles, whether in development or with years of experience.

Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.774721). As I Out Rode This Enderes Night is a companion carol to the well-known and very popular Lully, Lullay, also known as the Coventry Carol. Both carols were part of the Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The pageant was a mystery play regularly performed in the English city of Coventry from the early 15th Century until around the middle of the 16th Century. The Pageant also included a third carol beginning with the line Down from Heaven, from Heaven so High.The mystery plays of medieval Europe were traditionally created and performed by craft guilds based in the larger cities. These mystery plays focused on the representation of stories from the Bible, told in the local vernacular rather than in Latin. They told of subjects such as the Creation, the Nativity, the Passion and the Last Judgment.The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors depicted the Christmas story, covering events from the Annunciation through to the Massacre of the Innocents. Lully, Lullay refers to the latter event in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two, in Bethlehem, to be killed. As I Out Rode and Down from Heaven referred to the angel’s announcement, to shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem, concerning the birth of the Christ child and the subsequent visit by the shepherds to the manger, where they found the baby with Mary and Joseph.Today, the two shepherds’ songs are often combined into a single carol with the title As I Out Rode This Enderes Night or The Coventry Shepherds Carol.This new SATB-with-descant arrangement (the original was scored for treble, tenor and bass) incorporates an additional three verses, the lyrics of which are an adaptation of the dialogue from the pageant that came between the two songs of the shepherds.

William Butler Yeats ends his short story The Adoration of the Magi with the narrator describing a centuries old Gaelic prayer… when I pray against the demons I repeat a prayer which was made I know not how many centuries ago to help some poor Gaelic man or woman who had suffered with a suffering like mine.â€The ancient prayer is presented for female voices and solo violin followed by The Magi introducing piano and choir. Yeats’ Magi “appear and disappear†in modern times, with “their ancient faces like rain-beaten stonesâ€. This piece is a choral adaptation of an art song setting for soprano and piano of an original text in German contemplating the nature of the ever powerful ocean. The gentleman who wrote the original poetry did so in response to observing the waves breaking upon a rocky shoreline. There is an English text under the German that is a literal and exact translation of the original language and is so well worked out that the same exact music serves the text in both languages with syllabic stress and placement of words in the sentence. Thus it may be sung in either German or English with equal effect. This choral version is an enrichment of the vocal texture but with harmonic language derived from the original piano accompaniment. The piano accompaniment is identical to that of the art song and is somewhat challenging. The choral parts are not terribly difficult, but the difficulty is enhanced somewhat when sung in German. The constant ebb and flow of the sea as well as its power and majesty and mystery are evoked in this richly harmonic and strikingly melodic music.

These two themes weave together throughout the piece and finally coalesce to express the brightness of the sign that is signaled by the star and angels, as the upper voices sing the words “love divine,†painting colors of gold and white light illuminating the peaceful manger scene.

The awe and mystery of our universe is contemplated in this gently flowing music. The piece is based on a poem about a photograph called the Hubble Deep Field, an image made by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. While making the image, astronomers pointed the telescope at a seemingly black and empty piece of space, then made time exposures lasting many days. The resulting photo shows ancient galaxies that existed in the universe billions of years ago. They are so far away that their light is only now reaching the telescope – millions, even billions of years after all their stars have died. In other words, while we see nothing in that piece of sky, the telescope can still see what used to be there. In the end, of course, we will never know what, if anything, is still there. We can only stare into empty black space and imagine...
