El roble y el ombú (The Oak and Embú Evergreen) is a traditional zortziko (5/8 dance rhythm of the Basque country) vidalita (a sad, romantic, popular song usually accompanied by the guitar), sung by choirs on both sides of the Atlantic, in which freedom is sung and the nostalgia for Basque emigration in those lands are recounted. The lyrics were penned by Bilboa-born journalist Felix Bilboa Garci-Arcélus (himself an emigrant to Argentina). This arrangement is for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. The inspiration for this piece came on a hot summer's day, looking up at the bold blue sky and seeing a single small cloud drift by. As a cloud is an atmospheric phenomenon this is an atmospheric piece - no one voice part has the melody but rather it is the changing of the chords of the full choir that creates the melodic line.There is no tonal centre to the work, so it is suggested for more advanced choirs. Due to the lack of tonal centre in this piece, it may be easier to learn by simply going through and building each chord in succession so the singers have the sound in their ears before singing through for the first time.

It emphasizes the concepts of pressing on, having courage, and not fearing. Difficulty: Medium (There are some independent singing sections, some notes at the top of the soprano and tenor range, and a couple spots with less typical harmonies. It is, however, not a difficult piece overall. Those who are accustomed to singing in choirs will have no trouble but will be challenged enough to enjoy the piece.) If using in a choir, you can have the higher notes sung one octave lower by those out of range, or add a harmonic note as needed. There are only a couple of instances where this might be needed.
