Published by Joshua Shoemaker (A0.1025362). Loch Lomond has its roots in the Jacobite uprising of 1745. This rebellion was the final and bloodiest Scottish war for independence. It ultimately failed, and many Scots were taken prisoner. Some prisoners were pardoned and freed, while others were condemned to death. It is here the song depicts two such prisoners. Both are friends, but one has been pardoned, while the other has been condemned. The song is from the point of the condemned friend, speaking to his freed friend. The condemned friend states that while his spirit will reach Lake Lomond, Loch Lomond that is, before his friend, the condemned friend's spirit will never be able to communicate with his significant other again. Whereas the freed friend has demanding physical journey home, but will be able to see his significant other again.

In a large-scale art project, prisoners serving a life sentence at the Clairvaux high-security prison in north-eastern France were interviewed by the composer, who set their stories to music. The piece is incredibly dark, coloured by the innermost thoughts of individuals who know they will never again be free, people who are slipping into oblivion. Clairvaux wasn't always a prison, though - it was formerly an important monastery. Established by St. Bernhard in 1115 and closed in connection with the French Revolution, Clairvaux is a mythic place. For some, it is an abbey where thousands of monks voluntarily chose the path of saints, plunging themselves into the blessed silence of darkness. For others, it is a prison, the sheer name of which inspires terror and generates horrific images. My intention was that we, with our concert, would create a bridge between the present and the past, between incarceration and voluntary solitude. So I sought out the historical sources for our earliest notated music, from the French abbey of Solemn, and composed a variety of versions based on Gregorian themes. Chiaroscuro, an a capella SATB work from American composer P. F. Strohm, contrasts the effects of light in three movements: 1) Light, which imagines the first use of speech to describe the feeling of light; 2) Shadows, written from the view of a thoughtful prisoner in Plato's Allegory of the Cave; and 3) Faded Figure, which presents the musings of a pentimento figure in a painting who was first visible then covered over by the artist in pursuit of chiaroscuro effects. You or your mixed choir may see other allegories--try Chiaroscuro and see what they say! The score includes rehearsal piano. The level of difficulty is Medium. Performance time is 4:52. Meet Abner, Dinah, and Hezbah-each of them are captives in a Roman jail. Listen to them discuss their lives of crime and the hopelessness it has brought. However, everything changes when Paul & Silas are put in the jail. Despite their recent beatings, Paul and Silas speak and sing of the joy that can only be found through Jesus Christ. Experience the earthquake, the prison bars and chains disintegrating, and the huge door miraculously opening on its own! Once the jailer realizes that the prisoners are all there, his heart is opened to the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
This program has eleven songs, including ten songs for the choir and one song for choir or duet. One song features a duet as well as the choir. This musical is written for a four-part SATB choir. It has six speaking parts with some optional parts for extra ?prisoners.? It can be done as a full-length drama or adapted for readers? theater. The program is approximately fifty minutes in length.

This poem is a monologue, in which one soldier speaks to the fiancé or girlfriend of a dead soldier of his death- mourning his loss and regretting that he will never have the pleasure of the dead soldier’s company again. The poem was inspired by the supposed death of Ivor Gurney’s best friend Willy Harvey in August 1916. Reality told a happier story than the drama described in the poem: Harvey was not in fact killed, but had been made a prisoner of war, returning to his fiancé Sarah Kane at the end of the war.
