I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1370). 8.27 x 11.7 inches.In 2017, I was commissioned by the male voice choir Svanholm Singers to write a work for inclusion in a concert marking 70 years since the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Choosing a text was difficult. I came across upon a poem by Maya Angelou, but it struck me as being too powerful and emotional for the music I was writing to carry it; everything I composed sounded banal next to Angelou's words. I soon realized that I could use silence to enhance the text, rather than heaping layers and layers of music upon it. Silence is both terrifying and serious - in a sense, it is the only adequate counterpoint to the poetry. So, I decided to build the piece on silence. Though the beginning of the piece is the opposite of silence - a scream of desperation -, I followed that outburst by cutting the poem's stanzas into single words, repeated in a different order each time, almost in the manner of a mantra. Finally, they end up in the right order and suddenly the words take on their rightful meaning. I hope, in this way, the music is equally powerful as the words. Son to Mother has been well-received and has gone on to become one of the most widely performed pieces I have written. It has been performed at various festivals and in various countries, including Taiwan, France and China - where it only just made it past the government censors. - Henrik DahlgrenThis version is an adaptation for mixed choir of the original male choir version. Henrik Dahlgren is a Swedish composer, born 1991. He has been studying at the Academy Of Music in Malmo with Prof. Rolf Martinsson and the Royal College Of Music in London with Dr. Haris Kittos. Henrik started his musical career as a drummer and has ever since worked in a very wide range of different genres and styles, both as a performer and as a composer.

Then by an unexpected stroke of luck, I stumbled across this one in a choral book, and was transported back to high school to the first time I had heard it: it was the first time I ever heard one of my best friends sing. Then, as now, I was moved by the lyrics and the easy folk tune melody, and in that instant, I knew. This was the one. From there, the vocal parts seemed to write themselves. I contributed vocals of my own in order to heighten the impact of the cluster chords and to further enhance the song's themes. I hope the music provides as much joy as it did for me writing it and singing it.

Hope is such a powerful thing that can push us through the toughest of times. In this poem, Emily Dickinson calls hope a feathered thing. It perches in the soul and sings without stoping. The singing is at the loudest when things are at their worst. Although hope is the central theme to the poem, the harsh conditions that are described in the poem was the driving force while writing the music. Creating a sound for the chillest day and the storm that could not abash the little bird was what really inspired me to write this piece. Something that stood out for me, was the use of dashes that breaks up the poem. I used rests to create these breaks. These rests are very deliberate to show these pauses of contemplation, almost struggling for the right words to describe a complex subject such as hope. At first the rests felt like a hindrance, where it felt natural for the music to flow, but now I cannot imagine the piece without it.

This is NOT a transcription, but an authentic edition created from the handwritten manuscript of Gene Puerling. The influence of Chick Corea is found in the simple repetitive harmonies and driving rhythms. Two vocalists are featured melodically throughout the piece (with melodic line inspired by Chuck Mangione, thus the mash-up name in the title!), with up to six parts in the ensemble vocal parts. More accessible than many other Puerling charts, this piece gives lots of opportunity to work on ensemble tuning and rhythmic vitality! While much of the psalm indicates that its author was dealing with some serious life issues, in this verse the psalmist affirms a trust in the Lord’s help: not salvation for the next life, but rescue and shelter within the present lifetime. This piece attempts to portray such trust in God during times of struggle and pain.At least two soloists are necessary, but the solo parts may be divided among more singers if desired to suit your ensemble. The piece may be performed successfully using only chorus, soloists, and piano; however, there is also an orchestration available (S0.249231) for trumpet, tenor sax, guitar, and upright bass. Be warned that the tenor sax part is advanced-but someone who regularly handles musical theater woodwind books should have no problem. Including a drum set is recommended if you have someone who can find his or her way through the piece and enhance its gospel flavor; there is no written drum set chart, because the person you would want to play this piece with you won’t need it.Enjoy!

Missa Solemnis in B major, op. 27, vocal score and piano part (for rehearsal purposes only). Based on its Neo-classical style, this setting of the Roman Catholic mass text could possibly work as a festive mass (missa solemnis) with trumpets and timpani, and its duration would fit such a solemn service. However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque†(which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patreâ€, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nationsâ€, more appropriate in the concert hall. The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis†and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis†gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deoâ€, „et ascendit in caelisâ€, „in remissionem peccatorum†and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus estâ€, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixusâ€, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibiliumâ€, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto†etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit). „Kyrie†is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria†begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo†has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange linguaâ€, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria†and „Credo†end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris†and „et vitam venturi saeculiâ€, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei†end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctusâ€). „Judicare†quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae†plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus†and „Benedictus†sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Deiâ€, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi†and „dona nobis pacemâ€). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison†theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully. Total duration: 50 min. English.Thomas Hood's poem, The Stars are with the Voyager, has inspired many lyric and lush choral settings of this text. As I read Hood's story of constant love, I feel the inevitable promise found there, but also a sense of timeless adventure. At the beginning of this setting, the piano represents the rolling waves of the sea—relentless and full of energy—and the unyielding march of time. The fourth verse becomes contemplative following the setting of the sun and grows into the brighter day before a layering of the opening melody that moves into the distance.

Scottish-born James Montgomery (1771-1854) was a poet, writer, and editor, raised and theologically trained in the Moravian Church. As a writer of hymns, his work has been compared favorably to that of Samuel Wesley, Isaac Watts, Philip Doddridge, John Newton, and William Cowper (Cooper). Among his most well-known lyrics are Angels From the Realms of Glory, Go to Dark Gethsemane, and Hail to the Lord's Anointed.In the Hour of Trial consists of four stanzas of eight lines in 6.5.6.5 meter, written in the first-person voice. Stanzas 1 and 2, presented by unison women's voices, then men's, are pleas for Jesus' presence in times of temptation; stanza 3, in full harmony and unaccompanied, expresses the author's reliance on Christ in times of affliction; stanza 4, with full choir and organ accompaniment, expresses the author's reliance, at time of death, on Jesus' truth and promise of eternal life.
