I was so moved by the ones I saw that I immediately asked to see more of them. I narrowed down my choices to eight sea-themed poems that became the basis for Seascapes. English.Northwest Passage is a set of “poetic landscapes†that reflects on three elements of the great Northwest of the United States—rivers, mountains, and prairies. Each sonic reflection (movement) combines to form a larger image, not unlike someone standing on a vista and seeing rivers, mountains, and prairies—each distinct, but part of one vast expanse.The work is scored for two versions: mixed chorus and piano, or mixed chorus, wind quintet, and string quartet. The harmonic vocabulary of the work maintains an uncomplicated, transparent (“organicâ€) approach in describing nature. The melodic vocabulary immediately pulls the listener's eye to the image, and rhythm is used as the underlying spark that is subtly ever changing and unpredictable. These three poetic landscapes should be performed without applause between movements.1. A Willow by the River|William Carlos Williams was a medical practitioner, pediatrician, and an avid writer. He wrote short stories, novels, plays, critical essays and, of course, poetry. The subjects of his writing were often “local†images, and he preferred to see the world “as it is,†without unnecessary trappings or “airs.†He was an important mentor to many younger poets of his day. “Willow Poem†(A Willow by the River) has no rhyme scheme but is comprised of fourteen individual lines. The willow is the focus of the poem (by its title and content) and how it never changes but will always “be.†The river represents, among other things, life quickly moving by and in a constant state of motion.2. Mountains|Marjorie Seiffert (who often used the pseudonyms Elijah Hay or Angela Cypher) led an incredibly full and balanced life. College introduced her to a world beyond her domestic and civic life and, as a result, she wanted to experience self-empowerment and independence. She prided herself in being a spouse, mother and maintaining a full slate of professional appearances and commissions for writing. Her poetry is vivid, keenly “visual,†and full of fast-paced, tightly woven ideas. “Mountain trails†(Mountains) was written at Glacier Park, Montana in September 1917.3. The Prairie|John Hay was an American statesman who was personal assistant to Abraham Lincoln. He also served as U. S. Secretary of State and Ambassador to Great Britain. He was a cultivated man of letters and wrote poetry which was straightforward in design and delivery. Nature was often the subject of his creative output. -Z. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787250). SONG OF THE MOUNTAINS is a setting for mixed (SSAATB) choir with piano accompaniment of text adapted from prose by American naturalist John Muir (1838-1914). Commissioned for the Combined Choirs of St. Joseph's School, Seattle, directed by Rick Boyle, who premiered the piece at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on May 6, 2004, in the second annual New Works New Hope concert for the benefit of Gilda's Club Seattle. The piece was revised in 2007 and the premiere of the revised score was given on November 16, 2007, by the Queens College Chorus, Cindy Bell conducting, at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. It was selected by the Portland Vocal Consort for their 2013 Best of the Northwest program. Duration ca. 6 minutes. Conductor Cindy Bell says, Driven by a refreshing text of American naturalist John Muir, Bartholomew has created an accessible work that flows easily through both key and meter changes, and features expressive, lyric melodies contrasted by exciting rhythmic drive. Song of the Mountains is almost cantata-like, or through-composed, in that each line of Muir's text receives equal and interesting interpretation. Occasional use of the triplet rhythm creates both a relaxing effect (grasses cease waving) and driving sense of forward motion (Vibrating!). Effective use of dynamics and interweaving of choral parts make for each section having a musical life of its own. The rivers flow not past, but through us, thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, Making them glide and sing. The trees wave and the flowers bloom in our bodies as in our souls, and every bird song, wind song, and tremendous storm song of the rocks in the heart of the mountain, is our song, our very own, and sings our love.

The third stanza uses LVs to create a more legato sound, then an interlude precedes the final stanza, which includes a treble-bell descant. There are no bell changes in this festive addition to the Christmas repertoire.

Songs for the Journey outlines and explores similar themes as the traditional Latin Requiem - love, faith, mortality, surrender to an eternal will, etc. - but in a less ecclesiastical framework, with poems and texts drawn from a variety of sources. In assembling the texts, words of a particularly personal nature were chosen to echo Fauré's intent. The musical style of More Love is simple and direct and the message is positive and affirming, making it appropriate for a variety of performance settings. Duration: 3:15.

This glorious festival hymn arrangement begins with a fanfare introduction, followed by a straightforward setting of the first verse sung in unison. The second verse features the choir in four parts, accompanied by the bells and organ only. The brass and timpani join in on the third verse, which features a malleted or plucked bass line in the handbells, creating a march-like feel. A fanfare interlude precedes the majestic fourth verse, which features a soaring soprano descant, and a brief choral Amen concludes the arrangement. This hymn arrangement is perfect for worship, concert, or festival use.

During my work on this piece, I happened to be traveling by train. The pitches of the train whistle snuck their way into the score as a dissonant chord. A nature soundscape may sometimes accompany this piece, although the tongue click sounds create a bit of their own aural ecosystem. Drawing attention to the unfolding catastrophe of mass extinction, Extinction hopes to inspire humans to action to prevent further loss of species biodiversity.

One More Arrow originally featured as the closing song of 1983's album Too Low For Zero.It's a perfect song to include in a programme on the subject of life and remembrance. Bernie Taupin's beautiful lyrics present an elegy for a departed friend or father figure who now lies in the soft brown earth that holds him, forever always young. The lyrics drew from Elton John one of his most gorgeous melodies and I have kept much of the harmony intact in this arrangement, although the second verse gets a bit more ambitious. In addition, the melody is shared out between the various vocal parts, meaning that the basses don't have to spend the entire performance going doo doo!Scored for Soprano solo, SATB á capella, this moderately difficult arrangement involves frequent splits in the Soprano and Bass parts, occasional splits in the alto and none at all in the tenor! In my arrangements, I like to go one step beyond simply presenting the original song for choir, so in the second verse there's the gentlest of subtle nods to Paul Simon's The Boxer at the mention of he could have been a boxer and the lyric knocked me down provides an opportunity for a choral cascade from top to bottom. And just before the final chorus, the choir's vocal lines represent the trajectory of an arrow, shooting up to a top F in the soprano solo part before descending into the new key of B flat major for the closing section.For medium to advanced chamber choirs.
