This choral work is sure to add excitement to your concert and it was given splendid reviews when it was first performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It was later performed at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls just outside London where it received a rapturous reception from the large audience. The work is ideal for music festivals (for which it was originally written) or any important event which needs a celebratory piece for choir and orchestra. The piece celebrates the endless joy of life and light, as children play on the seashore. The choral parts are not difficult and parts of the soprano could also be sung by children’s chorus if necessary. The words of the soprano solo part have a reflective, maternal quality as she watches the children playing on the shore. Singers are sure to enjoy the catchy melodies, the expressive soprano solo and the dramatic middle section of this work. Parts of the piece use several irregular time signatures. Don’t let them put you off! They are good deal easier than they look and the score contains indicates how they break down into simple units of two and three beats.The choral score contains a piano reduction of the orchestral score. The full orchestral score and parts are available separately from SMP. The orchestration is standard and requires: 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons; 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion (4 players), violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, double bass. A high-quality audio file containing the orchestral accompaniment is also available.The words are by the distinguished and much-loved Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). He made significant contributions to literature and wrote a prodigious number of works including essays, philosophical treatises, journals, memoirs, short stories and letters. The text of this work is taken from two poems in the book entitled Gitanjali. The title is translated as Song Offerings and was largely responsible for Tagore winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. The book contains over one hundred poems, translated freely by the author into English from the original Bengali, published in 1910. The English version appeared in 1912 published by the Indian Society of London. The text has been adapted slightly for this choral setting.Colin Kirkpatrick has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester and Belwin Mills. His music has been performed and broadcast world-wide.

Gilbert’s poem “I have a song to sing, O†set to music by Arthur Sullivan in ‘The Yeoman of the Guard’ or, The Merryman and His Maid’ (1888) is an example of a ‘cumulative’ song – where each verse gets progressively longer. It originally appears as a duet in the G&S opera, and gained popularity outside that world with Peter, Paul and Mary’s rendition, as recorded on their 1969 album “Peter, Paul and Mommy.†– introducing the world of G&S to a completely new audience. This arrangement is for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. It is an excellent introduction to the music of Gilbert & Sullivan, a teachable moment about form, and a perfect sing-a-long tune to include on any family oriented, community outreach program. This is an SATB version of part of Laurence Binyon's poem, and provides a much needed choral addition to the repertoire for Rememberance Sunday or similar occasions world wide. Optional text is offered for verse one making it appropriate for performance outside England and I hope I will be forgiven for taking this liberty. In the last verse, the last post may be played on a subtle trumpet stop by a second organist. If this luxury is not available, the accompaniment may be adapted accordingly, but it works just as well without the trumpet sound. The original version for solo baritone is also available on SMP.

This is one of the last songs that Freddie Mercury recorded before he died, and he wrote it whilst looking out at Lake Geneva, where Queen had a recording studio. He knew he didn't have long left, but his reflections in this song aren't melancholy - he writes of the things he can see out of his window, the beauty of the world, the fun that kids are having outside, and the simple joys of winter. The arrangement has some tricky rhythms, as it aims to stay pretty close to what Freddie sang. Aim for a conversational feel, with some freedom in the delivery, and it will become easier than mathematically working out all the cross-rhythms. Enjoy the big fall-offs - they're really fun!
