Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.774721). As I Out Rode This Enderes Night is a companion carol to the well-known and very popular Lully, Lullay, also known as the Coventry Carol. Both carols were part of the Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The pageant was a mystery play regularly performed in the English city of Coventry from the early 15th Century until around the middle of the 16th Century. The Pageant also included a third carol beginning with the line Down from Heaven, from Heaven so High.The mystery plays of medieval Europe were traditionally created and performed by craft guilds based in the larger cities. These mystery plays focused on the representation of stories from the Bible, told in the local vernacular rather than in Latin. They told of subjects such as the Creation, the Nativity, the Passion and the Last Judgment.The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors depicted the Christmas story, covering events from the Annunciation through to the Massacre of the Innocents. Lully, Lullay refers to the latter event in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two, in Bethlehem, to be killed. As I Out Rode and Down from Heaven referred to the angel’s announcement, to shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem, concerning the birth of the Christ child and the subsequent visit by the shepherds to the manger, where they found the baby with Mary and Joseph.Today, the two shepherds’ songs are often combined into a single carol with the title As I Out Rode This Enderes Night or The Coventry Shepherds Carol.This new SATB-with-descant arrangement (the original was scored for treble, tenor and bass) incorporates an additional three verses, the lyrics of which are an adaptation of the dialogue from the pageant that came between the two songs of the shepherds.

Written by Saint Thomas Aquinas for the feast of Corpus Christi as part of a complete liturgy of the feast which includes prayers for the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours. Panis angelicus fit panis hominum; Dat panis cœlicus figuris terminum: O res mirabilis! Manducat Dominum pauper, servus et humilis. Thus Angels' Bread is made the Bread of man today: the Living Bread from heaven with figures dost away: O wondrous gift indeed! the poor and lowly may upon their Lord and Master feed. César Franck’s setting of these words is perhaps the most well known. This arrangement for 2-part choir makes this wonderful piece accessible to choirs of all abilities. When allocating voices, put higher voices (S/T) on the upper part and lower voices (A/B) on the lower part.

English.I have always been fascinated with the juxtaposition of the grandeur of Christ's birth—choirs of angels and kings bearing regal gifts—set against the humble manger scene in Bethlehem. As contradictory as this may seem, it is also a fitting representation of the reality (and miracle) of that sacred event: the Son of God come down to earth. That is the story I tried to capture in the poetry and the music of this piece. The text draws on the 'human-ness' of the Christ Child and everything He represents, punctuated by the descending scale heard in the angel's recurring motive 'Gloria in excelsis Deo' that represents the physical act of moving from heaven to earth. Well, as the afternoon progressed, other tunes got added, resulting in a curious potpourri for choir and piano. The choir gets to sing On Ilkla Moor, the Este psalter tune known to all, and also Auld Lang Syne. The second voice, in its madrigalian way, gets a sly English cadence!. Meanwhile, the piano gets some sly references to Sing a song of sixpence and Scotland the brave. I sang it in G on this mp3, to fit my multitrack range, but versions are available on sheetmusicplus in G (ATBB), C (SATB) (fairly high for the sopranos) and Bflat (SATB) (fairly low for the basses) It can also be seen as a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRXrzrSY-Vw === While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around.
