Opus/Catalog Number: ICG 213, No. 7, Movement 5 Key/Tone: C Major Movements/Sections: Moderato Year/Date of Composition: 1877 Difficulty: Grade 3/12 (Easy) Obs.: This piece is the fifth and last movement in Gounod's Messe brève no. 7 Aux chapelles. It was originally published in 1877 in a version for two equal voices with organ. In 1890, Gounod rearranged it for soli, four-part mixed choir and organ and added the words Aux chapelles to the title. This piece opens with solo male voices singing a simple yet very lyrical melody. Then the four-part choir enters, repeating and expanding this melody upwards to its summit, after which a descending cascade leads back downwards to the main melody. The Agnus Dei then ends with the pleas for peace uttered in pianissimo chords. This arrangement is for SATB choir with organ accompaniment Included: Full score and separated parts for each voice/instrument.

This song was written for and dedicated to the Perry High School class of 1989 in Perry, Il, a very small town in population but big in humanity where I got my start as a first year music teacher. I taught everything from kindergarten through high school, general music, choir, and band. Many of my students from then are still friends on Facebook. The entire graduating class of 12 performed this at their graduation and I think it still speaks to graduating classes now. It is easy to perform, moving from unison to 2, then 3, then 4 parts. The piano part is easy enough to play for even mediocre pianists like myself.

A choir score is available separately This carol is designed to be very easy to learn and perform. It needs to be accompanied by piano (simple part) and drum (no snare). A bodhran or cajon would work just as well. There is one minor-key tune for both the men and ladies to learn. (This works as a 4-part round later in the carol) · The men start, accompanied just by the piano ostinato. The drum doesn’t enter until bar 7, when the men finish their ‘drums drumming’ · While the ladies sing verse 2, the men sing ‘Drum, drum’ in consecutive 5ths. NB, the melody is slightly different at the end of the ladies’ verse, since the words ‘poor and lowly stable’ need the melody to come down rather than go up · Then the ladies sing the ‘Drum, drum’ 5ths whilst the men sing verse 3 · Everyone sings verse 4 in unison and joyously · Everyone then sings verse 4 twice in a round – basses, altos, tenors then sopranos · Everyone repeats the last line of verse 4 ‘The child we’ve waited for is born …’ together (the piano and drum cut out so that the voices are unaccompanied in bar 35 – and then resume for bar 36) · ‘O hear the angels singing’ (unaccompanied) – then a loud chord and drum on beat 3 of the last bar Enjoy! Here the lyrics tells a love in a hard moment of life and every element is placed in a delicate balance where any change can be disruptive.Even trying to modify the music style would require an artist of the same weight, and I am not.So I tried to stay close to the original, using the most recognizable pattern of the song (the notes in sixteenth).Since we know that the vocal versions have to be shorter than the played ones (ears get bored before) and the original song if 4 minutes long, I cut the entire verse Ti porterò.... For those who want to play also the missing part, it’s easy: from bar 41 go back to bar 5, sing up to bar 18 (with the lyrics changed for the lead, Ti porterò..., other voices do not change) and then go ahead to bar 42 and from there to the end.

Then by an unexpected stroke of luck, I stumbled across this one in a choral book, and was transported back to high school to the first time I had heard it: it was the first time I ever heard one of my best friends sing. Then, as now, I was moved by the lyrics and the easy folk tune melody, and in that instant, I knew. This was the one. From there, the vocal parts seemed to write themselves. I contributed vocals of my own in order to heighten the impact of the cluster chords and to further enhance the song's themes. I hope the music provides as much joy as it did for me writing it and singing it.

Titled “Tàladh ar Slànaigheir” (“The Lullaby of our Savior”) and containing 29 verses, it is altogether a lullaby, a retelling of elements of the Nativity story, and an explication of the nature and work of Christ. The English text of “The Christ Child’s Lullaby” (containing three verses and alleluias) is one of many translations, adaptations, and variants of the original Scots Gaelic text. The tune, too, is one of many variants of a traditional Hebridean folk melody.
