Amen. - St. Francis of Assisi's Prayer before the Crucifix NOTES from the composer: One year ago, I had the privilege of participating in the Leadership Pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome (2011) sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, Franciscan Healthcare, and Viterbo University. I carried with me, not only the responsibility of bringing back a hint of Francis’ lived experience to my students, but the desire to compose something wholly Franciscan. The San Damiano Cross is one of the most distinctive Franciscan images we have on campus. The gentle Jesus that hangs on this 12th-century icon will forever be linked to Francis’ dramatic step from citizen to sainthood-welcoming his earnest prayer to enlighten the darkness of his heart. The Basilica of Santa Chiara in Assisi holds both the San Damiano Cross and the remains of his confidante, St. Clare. It seemed a good place to start getting serious. Copying the prayer in at least six different languages, I tucked it away in my travel books, not digging it out again until the following summer (2012). The opening phrases in the piece came easily enough (Altissimo, glorioso Dio), but I stumbled through a handful of ideas before coming up with the mantra (illumine le tenebre…). It made sense that Francis would joyfully address God singing forte (Altissimo and Signore), while quietly chanting his humble prayers for faith, hope, charity, and knowledge. The friendship between Francis and Clare can’t be missed, not only in the intermingling of SATB voices, but in the setting of che faccia lo tuo santo e verace comadamento (that I may carry out your holy and true command). The phrase is sung only once by the women before the final return of the illumine chant (which is repeated throughout by the men). Maybe I chanced on weaving some of Clare’s courage with Francis’ persistence into Illumina le tenebre, all while trying to compose something wholly Franciscan?  ---Mary Ellen Haupert, October 2012. While not very religious, I've always loved Jewish music. To that end, I sought out to write something that wasn't an arrangement of an already existing tune but wasn't also a more obscure prayer that only the more religious people would know, both of which I've done before. In addition, I wanted to write something oriented more toward a concert rather than a religious setting.Oseh Shalom comes from the last part of the Mourner's Kaddish, a longer prayer recited in memory of the dead. It is not only said in sadness, however. Many settings of the prayer, including Debbie Friedman's and Nurit Hirsh's, which are the settings I grew up singing, are very festive. Far up the west coast, in Aran and Clare, there's harpers to bring you a magical aire. I listened, enthralled, till the Winter came on, then pulled up my boots - and soon I was gone - searching for fortune for still I had none. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! I rested, by chance, at the close of the day, by a small rounded hill, where I happened to stray. Feature a soprano soloist or the section on an ethereal descant that elevates the texture to sublime heights.This piece came about for two different reasons. The initial musical idea evolved while I was working on a short study for piano, so the piece was strictly instrumental.The other idea stemmed from a discussion with my friend and mentor Dr Phillip Cooke, about why the word “Alleluia is so commonly used in choral music. Apart from the obvious reasons – “Alleluia being a significant word in the sacred music tradition, and so on – we discussed the multiple possibilities a composer has with a word like that, in the sense that different syllables can be stressed, such as alleluia, alleluia or alleluia.This was something I used as the other structural building block in the composition, and I added “Alleluia as the only word, but with the emphasis moving to different syllables throughout the piece. For me, the setting of a single word like “Alleluia is far from any texts I usually set. The word, however, has a strong anchorage in musical tradition and composers have always set this word in all kinds of different ways.In this composition, I am interested in the word itself, the build-up of the word, the structure of the music, and adding something to the musical tradition of setting this famous word to music.This piece was premiered by the University of Aberdeen Chapel Choir at King’s College Chapel in Aberdeen, Scotland. The performance was conducted by their Director of Chapel and Ceremonial Music, Stuart Muir. – Henrik Dahlgren.

Bring His LoveInspiration (below is a note I sent to my sister) Hi Karen! In the fall of last year I started working on a new church anthem for FUMC. Over the years your choir has sung several pieces of mine; so I felt I should do something in return. I quickly got an idea for the music only (sometimes I will get some lyric ideas also, but didn't this time.) By the first of the year I had the basic structure sketched out on paper but then put it aside for Easter Rehearsals. When the pandemic stopped all church choirs I returned to the music and by early May had the score in the computer, close to completion. At that point I still didn't have any lyrics but began feeling that it should be about God's creation. All I could envision was a singer with his arms stretched out to the sun, the ocean, the moon, etc. while singing this piece. So I started searching for a possible prayer that might fit and came upon Canticle of the Son. As I read it through I liked the structure and began sketching out the lyrics. I couldn't help but wonder what our response should be to God's creation. How should we thank him or praise him or take care of it? I then turned my thoughts to FUMC and considered this - what phrase would sum up this churches mission? I almost immediately got Bring His Love. From there the balance of the lyrics fell into place. So attached is the recording and the music. I have no expectations but hope you and the choir enjoy the music. The Music The piece starts with 16th note broken chords in the upper register of the piano which lead to the opening theme. A tenor soloist begins by singing God's praises for all he has given us; ending with the thought How can we thank such kindness?; The answer Bring His Love the B section. At its conclusion we are returned to the opening theme, this time sung by the choir which again leads us to the same questionHow can we thank such kindness?, The answer Bring His Love the B section. A C section is then introduced with a change to a more beat driven accompaniment with the vocals alternating between the upper and lower voices. A return to the opening theme, with minimal chordal accompaniment, features the original soloist but then adds a second voice leading to a duet and a return to the broken chord accompaniment.. Finally the B section,Bring His Love is repeated and concludes in a rousing fashion.. Program Notes The piece could work very well for Earth Day celebrations.

Appropriate for church services, college, or professional groups.Context: The piece receives its title from my little sister's nickname. Dia was born 10 weeks early and weighed less than 3 pounds. The doctors told us that she would not live. My father began to pray and certain scriptures came to his mind. Soon, he and my mother began to remind each other of these scriptures. Dia ended up making it. I tell her God must have something planned for her if she survived such a rough start.Performance: The piece opens with a joyful piano solo followed by the higher voices' entrance. These are the mothers exclaiming their joy for the new coming baby. The lower voices then make their statement in their own melody. They are the fathers expressing the excitement of the chlid's birth. The piano takes a turn into the minor key. A soloist represents the doctor delivering the bad news as the rest of the choir makes waiting room sounds. Have people texting or talking on the phone, flipping through magazines, or rustling papers. The alto soloist then repeats the doctor's message. The higher voices began to weep and cry as the father begins to pray. The 3 basses (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) answer in scripture. The father begins to recite the scripture with God and soon the rest of the choir joins. The key modulates to the Major 3rd as the piano solo returns to represent the child living.

BYZANTINE HYMN: TI IPERMAHO (To the defender army leader) arranged for SATB choir and pianoDuring a siege of Constantinople in the 6th cent., and while the regular army was engaged in fighting elsewhere, the city was attacked by Avars. The women, children and seniors left there fought as best they could, but finally realized that they had to give up. As a last resort, they carried the icon of Panayia (St. Mary, always referred to as all-holy in Greek), alongside the city walls, something that produced an unexpected effect: The besiegers left! For three days the citizens participated in liturgies addressed to Her, in a hymn called AKATHISTOS YMNOS (=Non-sitting Hymn), where this tropation is central, as it is most actively still used in the Greek Orthodox Church at many other relevant services. The first part is the original, in unison, or sung by a soloist. Hope is such a powerful thing that can push us through the toughest of times. In this poem, Emily Dickinson calls hope a feathered thing. It perches in the soul and sings without stoping. The singing is at the loudest when things are at their worst. Although hope is the central theme to the poem, the harsh conditions that are described in the poem was the driving force while writing the music. Creating a sound for the chillest day and the storm that could not abash the little bird was what really inspired me to write this piece. Something that stood out for me, was the use of dashes that breaks up the poem. I used rests to create these breaks. These rests are very deliberate to show these pauses of contemplation, almost struggling for the right words to describe a complex subject such as hope. At first the rests felt like a hindrance, where it felt natural for the music to flow, but now I cannot imagine the piece without it.

Later, the music increases its harmonic tension on the word “relentless.†The closing phrase is sung on a hum, as if to represent a memory, an echo, or perhaps a shadow in the window which reminds us of something that has passed. Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace. and Grant unto them eternal rest, O God. And let perpetual light shine upon them.
