SATB with organ (2-staff). A new setting, for church choirs, of Annie S. Hawkes text about needing the Savior. The first verse has a running melodic organ line with soprano above it. In verse two, ATB join in. There is a slightly haunting, yearning quality to the beginning and end of this song, with different, cheerier melodies in the middle, one of them in a different key. Somewhat difficult because the organ has its own melodic part instead of supporting the singer's parts.

The setting was written to juxtapose Stainer's Magnificat in F and works very well as a short reflective setting of the Canticle for 4 part choir (with occasional divises in all parts).Despite being a very short setting of the Song of Simeon, it should not be taken too slowly, although a slower tempo than suggested may be adopted, one should be careful that it is not allowed to drag. The Apostle John’s visions in Revelation are nothing less than astounding to all readers. However, little is it known that another Hymn to Christ is neatly tucked into the very first seven verses of this last book of the Bible. John begins his Revelation (verses 1-3) with a prelude, introducing Jesus Christ and the apocalypse (revelation) that was made to him via the angel sent to describe all the things about which he was to write. He says, Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and keep what is written in it, for the time is near. After this short prelude, John delivers an epistolary opening (a greeting identifying the author and recipients), then pronounces a blessing upon the recipients-verses 4-6. After both the prelude and the opening, John immediately proceeds to another known Hymn to Christ, in verse 7, which I have called, Behold He Is Coming. When presented with the text in Revelation 1:7, I immediately thought, Where is the Gospel, the good news, in this piece? After several minutes of meditating on the text, I realized the Gospel message was right there in front of me-in the very last line: Yes, so be it [Lord], so be it, [Amen!] There will be peace! All will be known. Every single person will understand, at that point. The end, is the ushering in of a new beginning. The piece is scored in G minor for SATB with flute and Bâ™ clarinet accompaniment. In the opening phrase, we hear the clarinet on a sustained high (concert) G, which crescendos into a quick, descending sixteenth note pattern. There is urgency! The flute joins the clarinet in a duet to complete the introduction to the anthem. Then, the choir begins their haunting chant, Behold, He is coming with the clouds. Every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him. Every eye will see Him and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him . Alas, there is peace! The two instruments dissolve into an a cappella four-part chorale where the choir creates the agreement between the text and the music, modulating to the relative major (Bâ™)-all is reconciled in a final Amen!

For this Christmas here is a dramatic a capella piece that is a Fantasia based on the old English carol God Rest You Merry Gentlemen. It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique while expressing, and sometimes expanding upon, each word. There is no Time Signature and thus irregular measures which change every few bars which would utilize 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4, but always maintains a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo. This is a challenging work with dynamic results.8 pages (I have only printed the refrain once (after the first verse) and it is repeated the same after every verse. If I inserted it after each verse this would have been a 19 page score to print. Best to just memorize the short catchy refrain.)4:45 minutesI originally wrote this as an a capella piece. Years later I also transcribed it for Instrumental Quartet. If you do not wish to do this piece a capella there are 15 different Instrument Quartet combinations also published on this site which double the four voice parts and are all in the same concert key and can be used as accompaniment. Â The recording attached is of the Brass Quartet version which exactly doubles the SATB voices so that you can get an idea of the rhythms and harmonies. Â

The notes and rhythms are very straightforward, and although the Gaelic words are a bit tongue-twisting, a mere five bars' worth -- five short text fragments -- serve for the whole song, and a phonetic approximation of the pronunciation is provided. The piece is only about a minute long, so it makes a good encore, or a fast and flashy finale for a folksong set!

Here the lyrics tells a love in a hard moment of life and every element is placed in a delicate balance where any change can be disruptive.Even trying to modify the music style would require an artist of the same weight, and I am not.So I tried to stay close to the original, using the most recognizable pattern of the song (the notes in sixteenth).Since we know that the vocal versions have to be shorter than the played ones (ears get bored before) and the original song if 4 minutes long, I cut the entire verse Ti porterò.... For those who want to play also the missing part, it’s easy: from bar 41 go back to bar 5, sing up to bar 18 (with the lyrics changed for the lead, Ti porterò..., other voices do not change) and then go ahead to bar 42 and from there to the end.
