Duration c. 25-30 minutes. This 8-movement cantata contrasts the cooking of the Christmas dinner with more reflective Christmas themes, with an opportunity for the audience to join in at the end. Ideal for Christmas concerts. We welcome you to our ‘Feast for Christmas’. In the first movement, Christmas Welcome, the scene is set: but the key to a successful Christmas dinner is forward planning and in the second movement the Christmas Pudding is prepared in November, on ‘Stir-up Sunday’. In the third movement, Christmas Eve, the early twentieth century poet Robert Bridges looks back, on a frosty evening, from his own time to the very distant past, and considers what Christmas means to him. Then in the fourth movement, our Christmas Feast is prepared, and the Christmas Grace (fifth movement) is not forgotten. It is of course impolite to sing during the actual Christmas Dinner itself, but towards the end of the meal the peace is rudely interrupted by the sixth movement, Christmas Crackers. The seventh movement, Christmas Spirit, reminds us, in seventeenth-century words, of how we should share our good fortune with those who have need of it, and in the last movement, Christmas Celebration, the audience is invited to join in, with the last verse of the well known ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ Some separate movements are also available: Christmas Recipe, Festival (Christmas) Grace, and Christmas Celebration. Composers Note This piece was originally composed during my recovery from CFS/ME. I was drawn to these particular words because, like me, William Dix suffered a serious illness which strengthened his faith and inspired him to write not just these lyrics, but many other well-known and beloved hymns and carols. The piece was premiered during the annual 'Carols by Candlelight' service at our local church of St Andrews, Kirk Ella in December 2017. The choir worked extremely hard to prepare for the performance and the piece was very well received by both choir and audience. If using in a choir, you can have the higher notes sung one octave lower by those out of range, or add a harmonic note as needed. There are only a couple of instances where this might be needed. Published by Brandon Haynes (A0.905717). If We are the Body was a praise song written over a decade ago in the early 2000’s by Mark Hall and performed by renowned praise-band Casting Crowns. The song still holds great significance nearly 16 years later as it poses important questions of discipleship to those who associate themselves as Christians. The song asks; if we are the body of Christ, what are we doing to further his kingdom? It also candidly points out many faults in Christian behavior, which is an honest quality I love about this song. Youth groups and praise-bands often perform this song; however, I have arranged the accompaniment more solemnly to highlight the text in a more meditative manner so that it is also accessible for adult church choirs.
