In the summer of 2004 I participated as a choir member in the International Church Music Festival in Coventry, England. It was the first time that I traveled outside of the United States and also the first time I had a chance to collaborate with musicians from all over the world. The experience made quite an impression on me. One day after rehearsal, I purchased 12 different postcards from the gift shop and got onto the choir tour bus. While I studied my newly purchased mementos, I realized that I was hearing music when I looked at a specific card. I quickly sketched a compositional concept on a scrap piece of paper for Agnus Dei. The postcard featured a sculpture of Christ’s countenance made from the remains of a fatal car wreck. I sought out other latin prayers outside of the Mass Setting to align with the other postcards. Once those were selected, short bursts of creativity and productivity over sixteen years brought us to today: July 5, 2020. The day I completed setting all twelve texts in twelve different keys.I would love to hear how you used this music either in a concert or worship setting. O. : Is my newest sci-fi full length modern play in the TYNE ONSTAGE series of original musicals. I wrote this specifically for the senior students of the Performing Arts. It has many leading parts for both sexes and has a hint of the 60-70 style of writing found in those musicals of the times but modern in context. The story line includes opportunities for many individual performances covering song and dance numbers, group singing, contemporary dance, dramatic interludes and strong comedy parts. This is an original story taking a humorous look at a possible visitation from our space neighbours. The story begins with the arrival of GS2, an ‘Interstellar Space Surveyor’ on its mission to map this part of the Universe. Whilst reporting its position to the home base ‘Niva’, the surveyor informs them that one of the planets (Earth) appears to have intelligent life forms. On receiving this information Niva decides to dispatch a party of college students to study this unique planet, much to the annoyance of GS2 who take umbridge at being appointed, what he calls a Galactic Nanny! Events take a dramatic turn when the surveyor is called away on an ‘emergency rescue mission’ so has to beam the students down to planet Earth, where during transmutation, they are warned not to integrate with the population. It was one of those accidents where you find something useful when you’re looking for something else. While reading on the nature of worship, a particular blog article ended with Adoniram Judson’s early 19th Century baptismal poem, Come Holy Spirit, Dove Divine. The flowing text called out (at least to me!) for a musical setting. Accordingly, some melodic and harmonic ideas began to percolate in my thoughts. However, before getting very far along in writing a tune, there were two surprises in store. First many others had already set the text to music before (with a multitude of tunes) going back to at least 1833. Second, despite being a Baptist for over forty years, I discovered that this hymn has been in the Baptist Hymnal since 1956 yet I have no recollection of every singing it! Well, chagrined at my ignorance, I carried on writing a new melody and harmony for this deserving text. I sought to make it friendly to congregational singers while still containing rich and sing-able harmonies and so aimed for a four-part hymn-style form. However, as I suspect my ignorance of the hymn is a common condition, a fresh and modern tune which would be at home in varied musical styles and have popular appeal was also pursued. The result is a delightful and uplifting tune, easy to sing, with an optimistic and forward momentum, commensurate with the meaning of believers’ baptism, Buried with Him in baptism; raised to walk in new life. The music is flexible in application to many church music styles: praise team and band, choir and organ, congregation and piano, or mix and match to fit your needs. May you find Come, Holy Spirit, Dove Divine, singing a much needed text, a means for your congregation to joyfully join with new believers in celebration of their baptism!

After being asked three times Peter reaches reality: Lord, you know everything … you know how much I love you! and receives the commission Feed my sheep. Peter and the disciples return to Jerusalem, and wait for the promised Holy Spirit. At Pentecost the Spirit comes, and as A CHOSEN PEOPLE, the followers of Jesus receive his power. Peter preaches, and thousands believe and respond JUST AS I AM … O Lamb of God I come. The Church is born and in the power of the Spirit begin WORKING IN THE FATHER’S BUSINESS, doing the things that Jesus did! Peter eventually arrives IN CAESAREA BESIDE THE SEA. He shares his vision with Cornelius and his household, and declares God has no favourites … you can be saved too … if you believe in Jesus. They believe, receive the power of the Spirit, and Gentiles also become members of the Chosen People, called out of darkness into wonderful light! On the morning of 2 March 2020, I finished writing the first draft of this song. It was the same morning that the New South Wales Rural Fire Service announced that for the first time since July 2019, the state was free of active bush and grass fires.At the time it felt quite euphoric. We’d been through a lot. Little did we know what was coming just a few days from then, when the Covid19 global pandemic reached our shores. It’s a virus that would kill millions across the world, and disable millions more, long term. It forced us, globally, into a kind of reckoning the like of which we had never experienced before. Non pharmaceutical controls like lockdowns, mask mandates, social distancing and ventilation standards were employed to keep us safe from this airborne virus, whilst scientists worked round clock to develop vaccines and treatments.Technically, the declaration of a pandemic is still active, but governments and people have somehow decided for themselves that it is all over. No one takes any precautions any more. Governments have stopped reporting statistics. People who know they are infected are going about their business with no thought for others. Meanwhile, many of the immune-compromised, the disabled, the vulnerable, are unable to safely leave their homes and engage in activities out in the world. I know this, because I am a carer for a vulnerable person.What this whole exercise has taught me is that people in the world are actually much less kind than I thought they were. Humans do not really care for each other. People attack me for wearing a mask, tell me that I’m virtue signalling and that I look ridiculous (as if I care how I look). I’ve asked questions about workplace Covid safety and been informed that it’s “a bit rich†that I’m asking at all, when everything is now safe. A friend’s diagnosed Long Covid symptoms were cruelly minimised or completely dismissed “Oh, it’s not Covid. How old are you? In your forties? It’s your hormones, it’s the menopause.†The fatal combination of sheer selfishness, rampant misinformation and DISinformation continues, whilst people waltz around spreading a deadly virus with no thought for the grief that will undoubtedly ensue.It boils down to this: if we want to continue as a species and to have a planet on which to reside, we have to stop with the Self Care and start with the Community Care. A choir is the perfect instrument for expressing these notions, through the unique power of the massed first person plural. My wish for this piece is that it spurs performer and listener alike into some kind of action. Please consider the effect your actions have on others, and on the planet, and make any changes necessary, however inconvenient or difficult they are. Otherwise, there’s really no point.Sally Whitwell 11 July 2023.

The music is composed by Carl M. Steubing and the words are from a poem written by Carl’s good friend Miles J. Martin.  The opening lyrics, “Who is that manâ€, refers to an older Asian gentleman Miles encountered during vacation in the Far East. They were strangers that could not communicate, but when their eyes met they smiled at each other, and Miles recognized the man as his brother.  Shortly thereafter Miles sat down and wrote the poem called “Brothersâ€. Carl M. Steubing wrote the music, and it was published in 1967. This song was very relevant back in 1967 but has even more significance today. Brothers (and sisters) around the world are looking to belong in our chaotic world. They are searching for more connections, more empathy, and more love for each other.  No matter where you are from, the color of your skin, the faith you follow, or the person you choose to love, may we all find a way to look into each other’s eyes, smile and see in each other our brother or sister.

A fantastic offer price for the full score and all parts! ... Looking for something to add a sense of oriental exoticism to your amateur orchestral/choral concert? This may be what you're looking for! This charming little suite of six dances lasts about 15½ minutes. It consists of a Pavane, Bourée, Sarabande, Allemande, Basse Danse and Galliard, which vary widely in character. As a whole the suite provides some interesting challenges for both performers and listeners. Apart from conventional strings, flute and harp (which can be either pedal or lever) you will need:- One or maybe two Arabian ouds. The parts are playable also on a fretless acoustic guitar. (Needs to be fretless because of the quarter-tones in some of the Arabic modes used.)- A cimbalom (the part can be played on a piano also, with slight modification). You might get away with using a hammered dulcimer but you'd need to make a number of compromises.- A doumbek and a djembe. These beautiful drums are a must for Middle-Eastern or African music. They're fairly easy to find, though finding somebody who can play them properly may take a bit more doing!- Finger cymbals and a gong. These are regular western instruments.- A wind-chime. Anything that produces a nice shimmering spangle of sound will probably do!- A group of singers (SATB). Nothing particularly challenging but see below.The primary oud part, the strings and the singers need to have sufficiently good intonation to pitch quarter tones. These are the exception rather than the rule, but nevertheless play an important part in the character of the music. Apart from this, the music is relatively straightforward and probably playable by any reasonably competent amateur or high school orchestra.In the spring of 2020 I wrote a set of short music tracks for a charity of which I'm a trustee. In order to protect my intellectual property rights in the music, I decided to bring it together into an attractive if not intellectually challenging little suite, hence An Omani Dance Suite. Originally the dances were all in Arabic quarter-tone temperament, but obviously quarter-tones cannot be played easily (if at all) on the flute, harp and cimbalom. So I have made some adjustments but retained the Arabic temperament wherever reasonably possible. I had thought initially of using a santur instead of a cimbalom, but the santur lacks the range and the dynamic capability to be used with a string chamber orchestra. The cimbalom doesn't need to be a concert grand model; in fact it doesn't even need to have dampers.The Omani was something of an afterthought: a musician friend of mine had worked in Oman and commented on how authentically Omani the Basse Danse sounded. The composer of this song, Karl Kang, is one of the prominent composers representing the Catholic Church in Korea.Looking back, my life so far feels like a miracle. Even when traversing the dark valleys of life, I believe I am where I am today because the Lord has always guided me on the right path. That's why I've always harbored the hope of creating a piece with the lyrics based on Psalm 23. This is a scripture that has consistently provided me with great strength, especially in difficult times. After pondering the words and melodies for a long time, I finally completed the composition. I express my gratitude to the Vox Coeli Youth Choir of Dogok-dong Cathedral, who first performed this song. Without the voices of Vox Coeli, this song might never have come into existence. I hope that through 'The Lord is My Shepherd,' many people will find the strength to take a step forward in a life that feels like a miraculous journey led by the Lord..
