Becky was a friend who would invite you over for dinner (she was a fabulous cook), offer you a place to stay, or lend you a listening and compassionate ear. She had an infectious laugh, almost a giggle, and her eyes lit up when she smiled. Though Becky took great pride in all of her professional accomplishments, her greatest joys were her son, Steve, his wife, Kalie, and their two daughters, Jade and Juniper. Her passing left a huge hole in countless people's hearts, but the joy of memories will sustain those who knew her, and her students will continue to pass on her passion for music for decades to come.

This setting of the well known Christmas poem 'I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day' restores some of the language that is commonly left out of most hymnals. This setting restores some of the anguish associated with the Civil War and allows for a tension not often associated with this text. A powerful setting. The title of the original Longfellow poem is 'Christmas Bells.' Charles Appleton Longfellow was the eldest son of the famous poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Fannie Elizabeth Appleton, who lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In March of 1863, with the Civil War then in its third year, nineteen year old Charley ran away to Washington to join the Union Army. He presented himself for enlistment to the commander of Battery A of the 1st Massachusetts Artillery, who knew the boy. The officer contacted Henry who reluctantly gave his permission for the boy to enlist. Charley proved himself such an exceptional soldier that he was soon offered a commission as a Second Lieutenant of Artillery. He first saw action at the Battle of Chancellorsville. In June he was briefly invalided home following a bout of typhoid fever and malaria, rejoining his unit in August. Then in November, during the Battle of New Hope Church, Charley was shot through the left shoulder, the bullet just grazing his spine. He narrowly avoided being paralyzed. Henry received word of Charley’s wounding on December 1, and he and a younger son went immediately to Washington, where Charley was in hospital, and brought him home to Cambridge. It was while nursing his son in his slow recovery that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow composed this poem during Christmas, 1863. -Ronald PereraDuration: 4:40.

I wrote this piece in response to the #BlackLivesMatter Protests across the United States and world during the early summer of 2020. The extreme extent of peaceful protests and violent riots demonstrated the desperate need for change in a way I had not witnessed before. I knew quickly that I wanted to write music in some sort of response to the situation, but I struggled at first to find my voice within the movement. I am a white male and have experienced the privilege that comes with it. No matter how much I sympathized or understood the struggles of minorities in our culture, I knew I could not possibly bring the full meaning of it through my music, as I could never really experience the trials they have faced constantly for so long. So instead I decided to write words and music that reflected how I hoped things would be going forward after this movement. I wanted this to be an anthem for those who have suffered through real oppression, in any form. While there are some religious undertones in the text I chose, I tried to find words that could resonate with anyone, reaching beyond color, culture, belief, orientation, age, or any other dividing label. I tried to write in regard to one thing we all have in common, humanity. I hope I was able to accomplish this. The anthem can be done in parts or unison or as a solo. It can also be done with or without accompaniment.

Creating choral versions of some of them is inspired by the solo recordings made by Jan DeGaetani accompanied by Gilbert Kalish, and by the choral recordings made by The Gregg Smith Singers.That Ives composed over one hundred songs is no small feat. Though they vary in quality as does his entire oeuvre, some of them remain almost mystical to me in their quality and effect. Like a Sick Eagle and The Indians (renamed here to The Native Americans to match the current times) are two such songs.When arranging Like a Sick Eagle, I visited the website for the Charles Ives Society where I discovered that he grouped this song with The Indians under the master title Set No. 10 of Three Pieces with the song Luck and Work placed between them for contrast. I knew I could arrange the first and third songs for mixed chorus, but I also knew right away that the second song would be all but impossible to arrange for I was already familiar with it. So I included it in its original version and labeled it for Solo Voice or Unison Chorus and Piano.In creating these arrangements I hope to rekindle interest in Ives’ music and its possibilities. I also hope that you find these songs as moving as I do.—Stanley M. Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. In the first chapter of Paul’s second letter to Timothy, verses 1-10, we observe the intimate relationship that exists, between a spiritual father and his son… I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. In Chapter two we also witness Paul’s commissioning Timothy to entrust to faithful men all that he was taught by the Apostle, that they then may be able to teach others in the same way also. While the elder Paul is now in prison and bound in chains, he is nonetheless empowered by the Holy Spirit to encourage and exhort Timothy to share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ, for the sake of the Gospel. Though Paul is bound in chains, he declares to Timothy the word of God is not bound! Endurance for Paul serves only one purpose, the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.In verse 11, Paul supports his statements by inserting another known 1st century Hymn to Christ, which brings us to our fifth anthem, For If We Died with Him. The text-or lyrics-of this hymn are even bracketed (or indented) in the NKJV Bible, suggesting the hymnic setting. The proposition of the text is quite clear; if we died with Christ, then we shall also live eternally with Christ. If we endure in the faith, then we shall also reign eternally with Christ. However, there is an insertion of 'Law' here, with a dire warning that the opposite is also true: If we deny Christ, resist, and refuse His beckoning and free invitation to salvation, then He will also deny us. Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven… I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:31-23). Thus, the stage has been set for the fifth anthem. The piece is composed for SATB a cappella. The key is F Major. The opening phrase, This is a trustworthy saying, is in ¾ time, where a series of triplets are sung three times each (the Trinitarian opening motif). The meter then shifts to 2/4 with a lovely, distinctive unison melody for the opening phrase, For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. Soon after, when the lyrics shift to the words, If we deny Him, He will also deny us, the song drops into the relative minor key (F minor). The melody in this passage is haunting, and sends a clear warning signal to the listener to pay heed to what is being sung. When the text then transitions from if we are faithless, He remains faithful, however, the key shifts back to F Major in a new (dance-like) rhythm for the final verse, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. A coda is inserted in the final phrase where the triplet pattern is recapitulated (This is a trustworthy saying) and the sopranos ascend to a high F singing the lyrics, we shall live, for He remains faithful! to triumphantly end the piece.

Audio sample sung (multitrack and transposed down a little) by the composer The original tune was composed with the words Eibhlin a Ruin (Ellen Aroon or Eileen Aroon) by the Irish bard Carroll O'Daly (14th Century), although it was later attributed to the 18th century Irish composer Charles Coffey (this was presumably an arrangement of the original). The words of Robin Adair itself are understood to be by Lady Caroline Keppel, who was in love with a surgeon by that name. (This seems more likely than the theory that Robert Burns wrote it, although Burns certainly knew Keppel's lyrics and made his own parodies upon the words). Some later versions of the melody contain Scotch snaps but this version follows the simplest melodic line, without the Scotch snaps - which may have been closer to O'Daly's original tune - and with quite romantic choral harmonies.

Do You Hear How Many You Are? for SATB choir was written in April and May of 2010. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. Jack and his Fortune is a major choral worked based on Flora Annie Steel's version of How Jack went out to seek his fortune. The original Irish folktale, Jack and his Comrades dates back to 1866. Throughout many years this story has taken on other similar stories like the well known Town Musicians of Bremen by Brothers Grimm. Each movement (six total) takes you on a grand journey of a boy named Jack who is seeking fortune. Not long after, several traveling companions (cat, dog, goat, bull and rooster) follow him in hopes of finding fortune as well.Traveling all day, the darkness began to settle for the night and they are in need of a place to stay. Finding a house, Jack discovers robbers counting their stolen gold. He comes up with a plan and scares the robbers away. Jack was smart and he knew that one of the robbers would be back in the middle of the night to take back the gold. He places each animal in different areas of the house to scare the robber away. What happens next is a frenzy of mishaps that eventually scare the robber away for good!

DedicationSometime in the 1980's, Richard Tober, a brother in Christ who was also an appliance repair man, came to our house on Hill Street in Coloma, Michigan to fix our kitchen range. He knew that I was a composer, and during the course of his time with us that day he told about his love for Jesus and his aspiration to write poetry with music to express that love. He didn't feel he was equipped to put music to his words, but he did have a poem that he gave me, wondering if I would set it to music for him. It was a difficult task because Richard's poetry was not set up in any formal poetic fashion; it was, however, a fulfilling task because his poem was such a simple, childlike, personal expression of his love for the Lord. I Am Going Home to Glory is the result of our collaboration. He was thrilled with the outcome. Now that Richard has left this world to be with Jesus, I am happy that God allowed and enabled me to set Richard's poem to music. -Richard Barber
