Frost referred to the poem as his “best bid for remembrance.†It was published, along with other celebrated poems, including “Fire and Ice†and “Nothing Gold Can Stay,†in his collection “New Hampshire†in 1923. I intended the slow repeating tone cluster chords in the last section as a solemn meditation on death. I wanted to be as deliberate as possible with the poem’s two concluding quintessential lines “And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.â€Â Whose woods these are I think I know.His house is in the village though;He will not see me stopping hereTo watch his woods fill up with snow.My little horse must think it queerTo stop without a farmhouse nearBetween the woods and frozen lakeThe darkest evening of the year.He gives his harness bells a shakeTo ask if there is some mistake.The only other sound’s the sweepOf easy wind and downy flake.The woods are lovely, dark and deep,But I have promises to keep,And miles to go before I sleep,And miles to go before I sleep.

This arrangement adapted for choir SATB and piano was designed to make its listeners weep with emotion, because the adaptation preserves the original essence of the work, keeping its integrity faithful to what Beethoven wanted to transmit, with only a slight change in tone and addition of harmonic resources in the structure of the arrangement. Even though it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion, being intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music, and nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using it for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as an ensemble practice. Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor sharp, Op. 27, No. 2, is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

On a Forest Path is the final movement of the composer's larger work, A Timbered Choir, settings of poems by Wendell Berry. It depicts various scenes that the poet encounters on his walks through the woods, and his reflections upon them. The piano takes on the role of the poet. The text consists of nine brief poems, composed at different times; several of them are only single line in length. The choral episodes are very approachable, with only a few moments of divisi, primarily for the sopranos. On atree stump Barny the barn owl wakes from his slumbers, winks, blinks and toowit-toowoos.Woody the little fir tree is feeling very sorry for himself, bemoaning the fact that all ofhis leafy friends have been taken by the townspeople for their Christmas festivities andeven the late arrival of Jack Frost, a most exuberant character, finds it difficult to lift ourlittle friend’s spirit with his cheerful banter. And so our fir tree resigns himself to make the best of Christmas Eve as allthe forest creatures hurry off home to prepare for the coming celebrations. However,things take a sudden turn when he overhears the fox and weasel devising a cunning planto make a pile of money, by going into the ‘Wholesale Toy Business’. Of course when others hear about the plan, Woody becomes nominated tosave Christmas and sets out on his adventure, with a little help from the Christmas Fairy,Snowy White the snowman and Gordon the Garden Gnome, along with other forestfriends. A setting of a very powerful poem by English poet, Ted Hughes, about the onset of autumn in an English (Yorkshire) garden and the surrounding countryside. It is full of pathos and passion, harmony and dissonance, chaos and peace - just like English weather!This is a very individual and innovative choral setting of Hughes' poem which is, itself, rich in 'meaty' metaphor and colour - and the composer is a vegetarian! It evokes a savage Nature within a savage landscape where humans and animals compete for space and for food. It is October, the fields and woods and gardens of rural Yorkshire are readying themselves for the cold and desolation (and despair) of winter which isn't far away in time. 'A glass, half-filled with wine, left out(side) To the dark heaven all night, by dawn Has dreamed a premonition of ice across its eye as if the ice-age had begun its heave.' That is only two and a half stanzas but you see from these lines that there are veiled threats of (Nature's) violence in the heavy tread of the poet's slowly-building angst over what is happening in the surrounding countryside - and his fear grows, and his awe grows, with every line. There is even fear underlining the very last line: 'And now it is about to start.' Winter is creeping closer and closer towards the house and it will not be pleasant to experience!I have tried to instil a little of this in the music which keeps skidding from consonance to dissonance and back to consonance. Sometimes the dissonance piles up, like snow driven by the wind piles up into deep banks; sometimes the music relaxes into stillness and calm (painted in tonal music) like a crisp, mild late autumn or early winter's day when the sun warms the landscape and life appears bearable, tolerable. I hope this adds to the song's 'charm'. It wasn't easy to write: sometimes the right music was elusive. The music ends with the word 'October' repeated three times, with voices overlapping in a little canon. This conjures up the wistful feelings of the poet as he looks out onto a peaceful scene, soon to be filled with all manner of 'natural violence', while his inner peace will soon be shattered by the mayhem about to be unleashed around him.Setting Ted Hughes is no easy task. It is for choirs and choirmasters to judge if I have succeeded in conveying the 'sense and sensibility' of a classic 20th century English poem.The price is for one copy: please purchase a sufficient number of scores if you intend to perform this work. For SATB choir, Tenor soloist, piano accompaniment and musical spoons (or aux. percussion).Of all the self-indulgent ecstatic Renaissance poems... this one must be the worst/best. The writer, a member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), imagines a literal Christ baby in the woods who is at one moment frying with fire and at the next melting into a pool to wash the sins of the world (or assuage the guilt of the narrator). Only at this moment does the narrator realize that it is Christmas day and the reader is left to ponder their devotional obligation to the poor. Apart from being a monumental target for parody, the text demanded to be set to gothic Halloweeny music. Expect unrepentant stealing from Gesu bambino and a nod to Handel’s French overture style. (Feel free to double-dot this section if you so desire.) There is also an Afro-cuban montuno piano solo whilst the baby Jesus burns. Because of course there is.
