The accompaniment respells many of the chords to simplify the reading and limit the double flats, C flats, and F flats of Wagner's work. Although very chromatic, the choral writing is not overly difficult and allows for frequent unison or part doubling.

This eight part choral arrangement of 'The water is wide' (to the tune O waly waly) was written in August 2013 for a university a cappella group. The melody is mainly in the soprano part, apart from verse 2 where it is taken by the tenors. The arrangement moves from a melody line (which could be sung by a soloist rather than all the sopranos) over 'do do' backing, to a polyphonic second verse, before moving into a homophonic structure with minor splits in the alto and tenor parts and finally full eight part harmony in the fourth verse. The voicing range from unison to 2-part and on to 3 and 4 parts, but in a singable, approachable range for choirs of medium ability and only a hint of easily sung divisi.The accompaniment is active but playable and the score suggests a harpsichord voice as the keyboard option. He set out with the goal of setting lesser-known, but none the less attractive, carols from different countries in order to paint different aspects of joy for the Christmastide. He employed the number Seven because it is considered a magical number (as it is applies to mystery in the liturgy). The final carol, God bless the master of this house, is an amusing combination of all the carols in the composition, in addition to other well-known Christmastide melodies. In certain passages, two, three, even four different carols are being performed at the same time!

The middle section is original music that wings the emotion/meaning of the text to a more meditative stream and back again—via a reprise of the opening fanfare—to the rousing finale with a creative descant that appears not only in Soprano/Tenor, but also (for a change) in Alto and Bass.
