This eight part choral arrangement of 'The water is wide' (to the tune O waly waly) was written in August 2013 for a university a cappella group. The melody is mainly in the soprano part, apart from verse 2 where it is taken by the tenors. The arrangement moves from a melody line (which could be sung by a soloist rather than all the sopranos) over 'do do' backing, to a polyphonic second verse, before moving into a homophonic structure with minor splits in the alto and tenor parts and finally full eight part harmony in the fourth verse. The ranges and voice leading do not make this particularly challenging (although there is one high A in the soprano 1 part and the tenor 1 part and 1 low E in the bass part).Vocal ranges:Soprano 1: C#4 - A5 (C# above middle C to A above high C)Soprano 2: C#4 - E5 (C# above middle C to E above high C) Alto 1 and 2: A3 - C#5 (A below middle C to C# above high C)Tenor 1: C#3 - A4 (C# below middle C to A above middle C)Tenor 2: C#3 - F#4 (C# below middle C to F# above middle C)Bass 1: A2 - A3 (A below low C to A below middle C)Bass 2: E2 - A3 (E below low C to A below middle C)

Adapted from Isaiah 49:13 KJV. Â With an exuberant opening, this song sets the tone for the entire work which includes vibrant and energetic passages along with more thoughtful and calm moments. Â The middle section is more fluid and homophonic with an emphasis on the comfort and mercy offered from the Lord. That is followed by a repetition of the opening bars moving into a to a rousing end. This work is excellent for any choral concert with strong singers and more advanced church choirs. Vocal ranges are within normal ranges for experienced choral groups. Â This is one of three settings from Isaiah by this composer which may also be found published on this same website. The others are How Beautiful and And In That Day. My Chemical Romance's lively up-tempo is full of angst and a great performance piece for mixed voices in six parts. In this arrangement, the opening verse is serene, perhaps lulling the audience into a false sense of security, before livening up in the middle verse, and opening up to the full rock version in the last (via an imitation string quartet waltz in the bridge). The expletive in the final chorus can be replaced with the radio edit lyrics, but I prefer to keep to the original where possible and appropriate!Ranges:Soprano = C#4 to F#5, optional B5, average B4Mezzo = D4 to F#5, average G4Alto = A3 to D5, average E4Tenor = E3 to G4, average C#4Baritone = A2 to E4, average F#3Bass = G#2 to B3, average C#3.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1373417). I originally wrote Total Eclipse as an expressive Art Song for solo voice and piano. Â I used several lines of poetry from Newburgh Hamilton (1741) and set them to unique music that is a fusion of Classical, Romantic, and Modern, with a touch of Pop. Â The music expressively drifts from major to minor to modal every few measures, inspired by the themes of darkness and light. Â When I adapted it for SATB I filled out the already rich harmony and added ethereal 'oo's under some of the melody. Â In a few brief measures, at different places, SAB each will have a divisi line where it splits to 2 parts. Â (The texture is never thicker than 5 parts at once.) Â This approachable piece of music is a good introduction for singers to the interpretation of an Art Song and is a dramatic performance piece for concert. Â And perfect for the upcoming April 8 total eclipse!(Haydn also used variations of this text to create several Recitatives and an Aria for his oratorio Samson.) Â 10 pages, 2:00 minutesVocal Ranges: Â all 1 octave; Sop - middle C to C; Alto - low G to G; Tenor - D to C; Bass - G to Gattached recording is of the original solo voice version which SATB is closely based on. A capella performance is preferred, but a keyboard instrument may support by doubling the voices. The first verse is for optional solo with a humming choral accompaniment and is in a minor mode. The second verse is tutti with all voices singing the text and is in the parallel major. The final verse incorporates the familiar tune by Gustav Holst. The piece concludes by recalling the original humming motif in the middle voices. Duration 3:30 A Child Is Born is a truly beautiful picture—sacred or secular—of the Advent story painted from the enduring viewpoint of his mother, Mary. Written in 1969 by jazz trumpeter Thad Jones. The lyrics were added independently by Alec Wilder after he heard the Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Orchestra perform it. The song has been described by Bob Yurochko (with contributor Wynton Marsalis) in A Short History of Jazz as a “beautiful ballad of mainstream jazz. This arrangement begins with a quiet intro in which both the piano and the Bb Instrument touch very lightly on Silent Night. The easily memorized single stanza is sung first by the altos, who are then joined by and succeeded by the sopranos and then deftly handed off to altos, tenors and basses who are subsequently involved in each four-part cadence point well as other unison and two-part sections. The halved repeat of the stanza can be a very nice piano feature or, optionally a Bb instrument—Flugelhorn (even a muted Trumpet) a Bb Clarinet or a Bb tenor saxophone can supply the solo with the voices singing the very light background. The key change is kept simple, with a descending scale into the new key. The final section makes additional mention of STILLE NACHT as well as echoing the intro at the jazz ending. Still, the instrumental part remains optional and the chord symbols make it easy to include string bass or even gentle jazz guitar (drums on this should, of course be mainly light brushes). The vocal parts are limited to practical ranges and, while there is divisi in the soprano part, each voice is always easily sung). The accessible accompaniment has comparatively little movement in the left hand beyond the middle of a typical measure, especially when there are technical requirements in the right hand. #choral #jazz choral #church choral #liturgical choral.
