This has long been a favourite track of mine and I have eventually got round to arranging it for SATB Choir. I have preserved the changes in style that characterise the Madness arrangement and much of the accompaniment texture. All the voices parts have melodic interest and the instrumental section is realised from the sax/ string parts. This arrangement works really well and requires nothing more than a competent pianist and an enthusistic director and choir to bring it alive!

My family were early adopters on Compact Disc technology. Whilst my school peers in the late 80s and early 90s were collecting tapes for their VHS video recorders, my family were collecting hi-fidelity CD recordings of classical masterworks. Three of these CDs stick in my mind; a period instrument performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert; a recording of the 1812 overture which boasted Real Cannons (and also warned listeners against setting the volume too high because it might damage the equipment!); and A feather on the breath of God, an album of works by Hildegard performed by Gothic Voices with soloist Emma Kirkby. Thus began my life long love affair with the life and works of Hildegard. I have been performing this particular Hildegard chant O Virtus Sapientiae in solo piano recitals since around 2014. Basically, I have been freely improvising on it, so it’s different each time. Some ideas formed during those improvisations which have really stuck in my brain. I’ve transferred some of these into this a cappella work. It is placed in a key and range that works well especially for young men with changing voices. It's mostly in unison and octaves with one optional harmony section that is very easy to pick up on. There is also an optional beat boxing portion at the beginning of the tune (which should aim to sound like a cajon or a cajon could be substituted in for a majority of the song) as well as a dropping of the beat after an accelerando that really surprises the audience and pleases many ears that like electric dance music styles.

An SATB version of the Lord's Prayer using the traditional Latin text (ending at a Malo, with an Amen), recently revised to correct some emphases. Although there are changes to the time signature during the piece and the home key wanders between G minor & E flat, this is a tuneful and approachable setting which any reasonably competent 4-part choir will be able to sing confidently. Obviously suitable for service use, but also possibly in a recital of short works. The recording was made live at Choral Evensong in Rochester Cathedral (with the recorder not really in the best position).

The famous 18th century Scottish ballad has been given a 21st century makeover! Although I like the well known tune made popular by the Clancy Brothers and the Gypsy Kings (among others), I feel it only really works as a solo unaccompanied song with a relaxed pulse. My melody line is more suited to accompanied singing where the piano provides a strong rhythmic support for the melody line. Some very simple harmonies are included, but the piece could easily be sung by a single voice (male or female) or as a duet. Please note that a simplified (SAB) version is also available to purchase from Sheet Music Plus.

I composed "Alleluia, Amen" principally as an Easter anthem. However, it works well in any liturgical setting where glorious praise is emphasized such as at offertory, prelude and postlude. Where instruments are available, timpani, trumpets and french horns could be added. This is also very suitable in a school or civic chorus concert venue. It really starts with a "BANG!".
