Ravel's masterpiece was written for violin and luthéal, an instrument similar to piano with a distinguished sound a bit like a cimbalom, the official Hungarian national instrument. As this unique instrument didn't seem to became popularity, he rewrote the part for piano and later also for orchestra. As he used in his orchestra version the harp like a solo instrument, starting the accompaniment of the solo violin after its' long cadenza with another, harp cadenza, he gave a major role for the harp. This transcription was written using the exact harp part of the orchestra version, complemented by the rest of the actually quite simple accompaniment. A real challenge for the harpists!

Published by iStrings (A0.875784). This beautiful piece by Tchaikovsky is one of a set of three for violin and piano. It is the original violin part edited with fingerings / bowings with the piano part transcribed to a lovely harp accompaniment. Very much like his ballet music, played some times even as an extra part for the ballet Swan Lake. Written by Hungarian violin virtuoso Nandor Szederkenyi, former concertmaster in several major orchestras from Japan to Austria, who also had a long career as soloist. Published using the leading notation software Finale, he includes bowings and fingerings, in collaboration with his duo partner/daughter who took care of the pedal markings of the harp part.

Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme(Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers AwakeBach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera.Fourth MovementBach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The lyrics have been set to many melodies, but the most famous setting uses the traditional tune Low Down in the Broom.

Ave Maria
Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach?s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert?s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals.
