Score and parts. 3 pages. Phil Beaman #6026409. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844961). In 1848 Robert Schumann wrote a set of piano pieces for his daughters which he called Album for the Young. One of the songs in that book was titled Nordisches Lied, which is usually translated as Northern Song, or I use the alternate translation of Norse Song. The original was Romantic Folk style with thick chords which I have simplified and arranged into ornamented 2-part Baroque style. Besides giving the symbols I have written out my suggested ornaments in cue notes. Continuing in Baroque style I used terraced dynamics on each alternate line and further denote them as delicately or boldly. The ornamentation is all in the upper melody; the lower part is a fun contrapuntal walking bass line of entirely quarter notes (crotchets). I have arranged it into ABBA form.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1349244). This jazz composition is based on the hauntingly beautiful 15th century medieval tune that is commonly used for the Advent carol O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Â I have reharmonized it with the accompaniment in a Key Signature a fifth above that of the melody. Â The accompaniment, part 2, has a broken two chord ostinato throughout written as a walking bass line. Â I have altered the melody, part 1, and moved much of it to the off beats. Â As in period early music, I allow occassional dissonances in order to keep the ostinato. Â This piece makes a wonderfully useful and unique addition to the season's repertoire. Â (I have also published a version on this site with text so it can be sung by a soloist or unison choir with piano accompaniment.) There are nine 8-bar sections in this theme and variations. I categorize it as Contemporary Classical because it fuses Classical, Baroque, Romantic, chromaticism, and lots of early jazz, all with a strong and vigorous Russian folk dance beat. Practicing your technique has never been so much fun; from mordents to syncopation with lots of varying articulation including staccato, slur, accents, and tenutos.

Phil Beaman #6328741. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.845176). The Elixir of Love is a comic opera by Donizetti about an elixir to cause two people to fall in love. It turns out that the elixir was fake (just red wine), but it caused the two persons to realize that their love had always been real. My arrangement maintains this joyful, almost comedic, side of love's feelings. Following Ludovic's earlier piano arrangement I treat just three of the opera's many themes. I have altered and enriched some of the simplistic classical chord progressions. There are now numerous markings throughout, particularly in articulation. Each part requires accurate rhythms, and each part has some virtuosic extended patterned runs. The range for each instrument is wide-2 octaves plus a third. This piece is a fun way to show your technical skills in concert or audition/competition. Or useful anyplace that you want joyful melodrama (Donizetti's own description). Also works well for pre-wedding music if you prefer the humorous side of true love instead of the sappy stuff.

Shadorma - A shadorma has 6 line stanzas where the lines have a syllable count of 3,5,3,3,7,5 respectively. The syllable count was translated into meter therefore creating 3/8, 5/8, two measures of 3/8, 7/8, and 5/8 resulting in 6 measure phrases. II. Cinquain - A cinquain is an American Poem invented by Adelaide Crapsey. It is five lines long and uses a syllable count of 2,4,6,8,2 to determine the line breaks. Three possible variants are mirror 2,4,6,8,2,4,6,8,2; butterfly 2,3,6,8,2,2,4,6,8,2; and reversal 2,8,6,4,2. Mirror and reversal are used in this movement therefore creating a pattern of 2,4,6,8,2,8,6,4,2. The syllable count is reflected in the number of notes in each phrase. III. Bantu - The bantu originated from Swahili speakers therefore incorporating the idea of call and response. The stanzas are couplets where the first line is more metaphorical and the second line more concrete. Call and response between each instrument permeates this movement with alternations of which instrument is the leading voice.
